[Op-Ed] The meaning of the “Orange Color War”
An untimely controversy is growing. There is a war between group Shinhwa and iKON’s fandom over “orange color”.
The controversy started when iKON’s fandom’s official lightstick was chosen as orange color. iKON’s support instrument is a Konbat with a color affiliated to “orange”, a color that symbolizes Shinhwa. As iKON’s support instrument was made known, the controversy started on various SNS accounts over “orange color”. Not just Shinhwa’s fans, Shinhwa’s Eric and Kim Dongwan too have stated their stand, saying, “Please respect what we have protected for a long time.”
A group cannot have complete possession over a color simply because that color is attached to its fandom. But there is an important reason that plays a part. Because that color can become a representative “symbol” of a singer and his fandom.

Orange is just a colour
It is hard to open this post. My thoughts started running at 1am, I stopped my draft at 3am, and now after 12 hours, things had spiralled into a more chaotic state. I will try my best to continue what I left off yesterday night and reconcile everything in my mind.
Some time ago, I was known for my opinion /evaluation. Although I am a mini volcano that erupts at the slightest thing, I try my best to be as rationale and as logical.
So Orange, is just a colour.
With that said, I still embrace Orange and don’t fancy the idea of sharing it with another fandom. But I was also one among the audience when Orange is being threatened. Because like many non-SHCJ, I could not understand the drastic reaction of SHCJ. Even Oppayam’s earlier words in an earlier saga puzzled me – “The thing that we want to protect, is Shinhwa’s stage and Orange Colour. Not the number of fans we have”.
iKon saga, by now is my 2nd or 3rd time witnessing our Orange being threaten. Eric spoke, and that got me questioning – had I been looking at things only on the surface? I started letting my thoughts run. *Some side track - I seriously felt like hugging him.*
Is Orange really just a colour? Are SHCJ really immature like the accusation from other fandoms? Why did Dongwan say that sentence that I could not grasp? He is usually the Oppa with wise words. *Another side track. Sorry oppayam that I gave more thoughts to Eric’s words and dismissed yours like this =X It is just…leadernim doesn’t usually speak up and when he does, he has good reasons.*
To answer my own questions, I decided to face the Shinhwa tag in twitter, even if some of them from my Orange Sisters are not what I would concur. But hidden among emotional rants and insults, are some gems. As I read more, I began to understand.
Like how countries have flags, companies have logos, religions have symbols, we have Orange. It is a symbol with deeper meaning for a distinct group of people and none of such for another.
Some tried to easily dismiss SHCJ’s reaction claiming that there aren’t enough colours to go around and they are willing to share, why can’t we?
Because your fandom colour does not represent your identity as much as our Orange represents ours. Allow me to explain. Take for example Big Bang. Big Bang’s fandom had a yellow crown. That is their identity. Some claimed they will be alright if a new fandom takes yellow, but will they be able to say the same if a new fandom specifically use a yellow crown? Our pioneer SHCJ did not have fanciful designed light sticks 18 years ago. Our identity is not an orange balloon, and orange lightstick, orange raincoat or orange crown etc. We are simply…Orange. So our Orange is equivalent to Big Bang’s yellow crown, not just their yellow.
Orange also represents the journey where Shinhwa and Shinhwa Changjo walked together; almost 2 decades of joy and hardship; 2 decades of precious memories. It is the bond between us. When Shinhwa sees Orange, it reminds them of us. When we see Orange, it reminds us of them, and our other Orange Sisters.
There is a reason for Shinhwa Changjo’s and Shinhwa’s persistent in Orange. It is something we hold dear to our hearts being endangered. And I can now understand why there is such a fierce resistance. I don’t want such a day where at a K Pop event, I see someone in Orange and couldn’t tell if she/he is one in the Orange family. The irony of the sentence itself explains.
With that understanding, I see why we are so obstinate whereas other fandom couldn’t understand and easily dismiss their fandom colour as “just a colour”.
Orange is just colour. But to SHCJ, orange is an identity and a magical bond. You don’t need to be in a fandom of a 1st generation idol to understand our reaction. You just need to have a nationality, or a religion, or have at least one thing symbolic that you want to protect (e.g. the real symbol of your fandom, although unlike ours, it might not be your fandom colour).
When one claimed SHCJ or any Shinhwa member are immature or childish over Orange, why not take a step back and think? Why try to dismiss something important to someone at a value of what it means to you? It is just a piece of cloth with pattern (for a flag); it is just architecture (for a religious building), it is just a colour (for Orange).
It is immature if we go overboard, but it is also immature to provoke. It is irresponsible to treat reactions as over-reacting without understanding the value of something you had tried to take from them.
With that, I finally understand Oppayam.

P.S: Dear YG, it is not the first time we clash because of fandom colour. As I understand from fans of your group, fandom colours is not as important to them as it is to SHCJ. Since that is the case, may I suggest for you to consider your own colours first when you introduce a new band so such unhappiness can be avoided in the future. As much as it isn’t important to you, Orange is precious to us. We seek your kind understanding on this matter.

Junjin: As I release my first album in 7 years, although my solo album is released a little late due to Shinhwa promotions, I’m saying this without any lies. To be honest, during this round of promotions, everyone pais as much attention as they did during Shinhwa promotions or perhaps even more. And even those who weren’t Shinhwa fans, as well as everyone’s promotions, or loving and helping me even more because of the performance or music. Putting in the effort when the album was digitally released, staying up all night streaming, going to work or school after staying up all night, although I had some knowledge of such love from the fans since 17 years ago, I feel it so much this time round, thank you so much. That I should quickly present even better music and better promotions, I don’t think I’ve ever had such thoughts. So thank you so much.

Junjin: Comme je libère mon premier album en 7 ans, bien que mon album solo soit sorti un peu en retard en raison des promotions de Shinhwa, je dis cela sans aucun mensonge. Pour être honnête, au cours de cette série de promotions, tout le monde a donné autant d'attention que lorsqu'ils l'ont fait lors de promotions de Shinhwa ou peut-être même plus. Et même ceux qui ne sont pas fans de Shinhwa, que cela soit pour la promotion, ou le fait de m'aimer et m'aider encore plus à cause de la performance ou de la musique. Avoir mis tant d'effort quand l'album a été numériquement libéré, rester debout toute la nuit en streaming, aller au travail ou à l'école après être rester debout toute la nuit, même si j'avais une certaine connaissance d'un tel amour des fans depuis il y a 17 ans, je le ressens tellement cette fois-ci, je vous remercie beaucoup. Le fait que je devrais rapidement présenter encore une meilleure musique et de meilleures promotions, je ne pense pas que j'ai déjà eu de telles pensées par le passé. Donc, je vous remercie beaucoup.

It’s really laughable how you guys are like “So-and-so is the best leader because he/she cares about the group members / takes care of them when they’re sick / mediates whenever the group fights, etc…"
What makes a good leader is one who exceeds the usual expectations of any leader. A great leader is one whom others (sans group members) talk about, and an exemplary leader is one whom impartial parties talk about and give consistently solid evidence how the leader pushes, and supports his/her group to the fore behind the scenes. That leader also puts the needs of the group before his own and yet be able to balance the needs of the group and the members.
I have yet to come across any other leader whom I think is as exemplary as Eric Mun. He has inspired me to be both a better person and a leader. Feel free to read up on him.
If you think I’m fluffing him up for whatever reason…I’m an independent thinker and am too stubborn to be easily swayed; and no, I am not an Eric fan, just his leadership style.
To each of their own style and each group’s dynamic & circumstances are very different from each other. Like what Eric had said before Shinhwa’s troubles and what works for him & Shinhwa are very distinctively Shinhwa’s. He also said they are/were lucky to meet good people that help them along the way as they push forward. Shinhwa members are known for having fights, disagreements among themselves but it makes them stronger when they don’t held back anything. And of course the 5 members that put trust in their Leader makes his job a little easier. They too contribute to where Shinhwa is today.
That said, that man who always puts the group first before his own, he earns our respect as a Leader and as Eric Mun the person.
[Review] How ‘Shinhwa’ loves their fans = the reason they’re long running
A singer might be able to gain popularity through good songs and performances but popularity is very volatile and hence it is easy to be forgotten. Amidst the flood of idols, Korea’s longest running idol group Shinhwa, currently in their 18th year, continues to top charts whenever they release new songs. What is so special about them?
The expression of one who is loved is different. The expressions of the Shinhwa fans seen at Shinhwa’s concert is one that is full of ease. When looking at them, who filled up the seats with orange lights while waiting the concert, you feel “Shinhwa’s a group that has received much love” but during the concert, through the Shinhwa members, you could see a greater pride than the aforementioned love from the fans.
Although they are now all in their mid-30s, with an amazing stamina and passion, that makes it hard to believe they’re in their 30s, Shinhwa thoroughly filled up roughly 3 hours 40 minutes. Not just that, each and every word they said, each and every action they made, mixed well and naturally with their consideration for the fans. The sense of belonging and tight bond between the artist and the fans was formed and the concert wasn’t a performance where they put up amazing performances as singers, but a place set up to communicate.
At the end, even after the 3 encore songs were done, the sorrow of parting remained so the 6 members went around the stage, looking at the fans’ faces and into their eyes, and even sing an extra song that wasn’t planned. As much as they have received as Shinhwa, they showed a love for their fans that was greater than giving fan service, and if they have communicated like that for the past 17 years, then the fans who have received that love can’t help but remain as their fans even after time has passed.
