Back in January I photographed protests that followed the travel ban. This is clearly long over due, but I still wanted to share these images.
I still believe in the power of images and the power of visual storytelling to record our everyday experiences but I’m going through a process of rediscovering the kind of work that I want to create and share with the world, so please stick with me as I take this journey.

In an effort to try to do something different I combined several photos in a multiple exposures as an illustration for a weather feature. I realize that I need to explore more with different ways of displaying and putting my work together, or take more “artistic” risks. I think that in the midst of trying to do things “right” for someone else I end up with work I’m not crazy about personally. So to sum things up I really need to keep trying new things with visuals.

Catch Up: Final football
Considering my dislike of photographing sports I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed shooting this particular football game during the last of a series of games held over a weekend for the KHSAA High School Football Championship. At the end of the game I made myself stay a little longer as everyone started leaving the stadium and happened to capture similar moments from the opposite side of the field. In the photo to the left a player from the winning team is congratulated by his mother and family as he holds the State Championship trophy.
Catching Up: Sports
I have seriously failed to keep up with posting my photos during the fall semester, so in an attempt to catch up my next few posts will be a grouping of some of my favorite images that I shot this semester. The ones above are all from the sporting events I covered. Sports is definitely not my forte. When required to shoot any kind of sporting event I was not looking forward to it. The dread of having to shoot sports came as a result of knowing it was not something I was particularly strong at and my own belief that I would just not enjoy being in the environment. Being forced to remain and shoot at a sporting event, I had to start challenging myself to look for the kinds of images that interested me and my aesthetic as a photographer. In this search I started to enjoy shooting sporting events more, although it’s still not my favorite thing to do I feel more confident than before that I can walk away with a decent set of images.

1. Samuel Painter, 16, instructs young ballet students during rehearsal for the Student Choreographic Workshop. Painter choreographed an original piece titled "Village of Broken People", in which 9 student will be participating. "I feel like I really Connected to this piece of music and this choreography," Said Painter. "It's been a really vulnerable experience, but a good one."

Jordan Leeper of the Charlotte Ballet had his last performance in Chautauqua. Jordan’s development as a dancer started in Chautauqua after receiving a scholarship to dance at the Institution at the age of 16. Now 24 Jordan is moving on with his career to leave his hometown of Jamestown, Chautauqua and the Charlotte Ballet to join the Atlanta Ballet Company. The first ballet performance of the Chautauqua Institution summer season, as well as my first time photographing ballet. I found that I really enjoy watching and shooting ballet. Hopefully I can continue to work with my shooting and with these dancers in particular.
