ADHD Reading Tricks that Work for Me
As a student, i have lots of things to read. But, reading can be hard when you have ADHD. So! Here are some tricks I use. They work for me, so they might not work for you.
1). Read multiple books at the same time.
This is more for novels. Basically I have 2-4 books I’ll be reading at the same time. This helps when I get bored of one book, I can just switch to another one. I never DNF books (personal preference), but if you find you consistently avoid one, then just drop it!
2). Walk or fidget while you read.
This method I usually use when I need to read textbooks or very dry materials. Basically, I pace when I read, and it helps me focus. This might not be feasible if you don’t have a big enough area to walk around, but you can certainly substitute walking with any other fidgeting.
And that’s actually all I have for tricks I use. If anyone else has any other tips please add!
Sadly this is true-
One thing people don't talk enough about, is that the way neurotypical adults are taught to punish/discipline/teach neurodivergent children is through competency-deprivation.
What do I mean by this?
Competency-deprivation is a name I'm putting forth to describe a certain tactic of social conditioning: An adult withholds a child's ability to feel competent about their actions and behavior, unless those actions and behavior are the ones the adult wishes to see.
Aggressions can range from micro to macro. Some examples:
Refusal to "yes, and" with the child's actions and behaviors unless they are "normal" behaviors, either by ignoring those actions/behaviors, belittling them, making the child correct their delivery, or by acting as though they don't understand them.
Calling the child nicknames that reference impaired intellect, even if done affectionately.
Discussing the child's behavior with another adult in the presence of the child, and not including the child as participant.
Ignoring self-reports the child gives because the reports don't agree with the adult's perceptions. For example, writing off ADHD symptoms as being an "attitude" or "motivational" problem rather than a neurobiological one.
Ignoring self-reports that the child gives because the reports are not being delivered through the "right" channel of communication (e.g. refusing to acknowledge distressed stimming as a cry for help.)
Competence-deprivation is, by the way, extremely traumatizing.
What makes it particularly insidious is that an adult can be extremely patient and mild-mannered and still traumatize a kid by doing this. Malice doesn't need to be involved.
This example uses neurotypical adults and neurodivergent children because it's the dynamic I'm most familiar with, but competence-deprivation can happen in any dynamic.
(What's worse, people who've been traumatized this way often concluded this is just how the world works, and go onto deprive others of their competency in order to regain a sense of their own. It's a social and generational wound.)

Psychiatrist backlog got me good
I'm waiting to get in to see a psychiatrist to clinically diagnose me with ADHD and to get an appointment these days is the same liklihood of winning the damn lottery. Girl I just want to get diagnosed 😫
GP: I've written up a referral for a psychiatrist for you, ring me in a weeks time to see how things are going.
Me: Ok
Also me: *4 weeks later* I really should call up my GP now.
Gets the referral is then directed to where my psychiatrist works
Me: I don't want to ring anybody up lets procrastinate for another 4 weeks!
Is it just me or does anybody else with ADHD/ Anxiety HATE calling people up on the phone and try avoid it... I know this is also me procrastinating getting an official diagnosis but I just don't like calling people its so awkward. ;(
Adhd be like:
Mom: How's the writing going?
Me: I'm glad you asked! My room has never been cleaner and I've decided to take up baking!
[later]
Dad: How's the cleaning going?
Me: Thanks for checking in! I've written four chapters!

I joke about being lazy, but irl, I'm actually not lazy.
I just have ADHD.
My actual willpower is strong. When I want something done, it'll get done. I'll make sure of it. ADHD can't stop me and neither could god, when he gave me ADHD.
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share this comparison chart about ADHD, BPD, and Autism. I found this information quite helpful and informative, so I’ll leave the link down below if you would like to read about it.

Shoutout to neurodivergents who were punished or marked down in assignments for using too complex language, and also shoutout to neurodivergents who were punished or marked down in assignments for using too simple language, and also shout out to neurodivergents who were punished for both of these depending on the most recent way they fucked up
ADHD People wouldn’t even realise we were being haunted
People with ADHD wouldn’t even realise it if we were being haunted. Items go missing: Damn it, I keep misplacing things. Weird noises while you’re working: is hyper focusing so hard that they don’t notice Cabinets and door mysteriously open: Fuck, I always leave these open 🙄 Lightbulbs flickering even though they just got put in last week: ugh, time for new lightbulbs? I can’t even remember the last time I changed them. Weird drafts: a vent has been broken for years since I’ve moved in, but I keep forgetting to figure out which one and fix it. Weird smells: I probably forgot to throw something away. I always do that haha Bruises and marks appearing on body: I wonder how I got this. I probably did something and forgot lmao
Then the ghost loses its mind and leaves because it wants someone who actually notices them 😂 ADHD ruining another friendship 😔👊
