While undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, I was also fighting a custody battle for my daughter.

I went through blood transfusions, chemotherapy, frequent treatments and a stem-cell transplant while trying to protect my role as a father. When I received the cancer diagnosis, my greatest fear was not being there to raise my daughter.

Fatherhood gave me a reason to keep fighting.

I recently shared this journey with Dave Alexander on Miami Valley View, an iHeartMedia Dayton public-service program. We discussed cancer, anxiety, men’s mental health, custody, fatherhood and the story behind my memoir, Rise Anyway.

Rise Anyway: Two New Author Interviews

I’m grateful to be featured in The Writer’s Workout Indie Author Spotlight and invited back for a second interview about Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival.

In these conversations, I shared more about the experiences behind the book—surviving cancer, raising my daughter, navigating mental-health challenges, and learning how to keep moving forward through some of the hardest seasons of my life.

Rise Anyway is rooted in a simple belief: pain may become part of our story, but it does not have to decide how that story ends.

Sometimes resilience is not dramatic. Sometimes it is getting out of bed, showing up for the people who depend on you, and taking life one day at a time.

Five Years Later, I’m Still Choosing to Rise Anyway

Five years ago, at 31 years old, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer.

At the time, my daughter, Rarity, was only 1.

What followed was chemotherapy, countless appointments, uncertainty, and eventually a stem cell transplant. It was one of the hardest chapters of my life, but it also became the reason I wrote Rise Anyway.

I wrote the book for anyone facing cancer, anxiety, grief, loss, or a season that makes moving forward feel impossible.

I’m grateful to WHIO for sharing my story and helping bring more attention to multiple myeloma, fatherhood, and resilience.

Most of all, I’m thankful for everyone who has supported Rarity and me throughout this journey.

No matter what life puts in front of you, your story does not have to end there.

I’m honored to share that my book, Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival, Fatherhood, and Becoming, was featured in the Dayton Daily News.

This moment means more to me than recognition. It means the message behind the book has another chance to reach someone who may feel overwhelmed, counted out, or unsure how to keep moving forward.

I wrote Rise Anyway to be honest about survival, fatherhood, healing, accountability, and becoming. My hope is that someone sees part of their own story in mine and is reminded that difficult circumstances do not have to define the rest of their life.

Sometimes rising means making one small decision not to give up.

Cancer Wasn't the Hardest Part

Most people assume the hardest part of my journey was being diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

It wasn't.

The hardest part was fighting for custody of my daughter while going through chemotherapy.

Cancer didn't pause my responsibilities.

Court dates still happened.

Bills still arrived.

Fatherhood didn't stop.

Life kept moving whether I was ready or not.

That experience changed how I think about resilience.

For a long time, I believed resilience meant reaching the finish line.

Now I believe it means choosing to move forward while you're still in the middle of the fight.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Greg Alan Jankowski on the IMAGiNE FiTTiNG IN™ Podcast for one of the most personal conversations I've ever had publicly.

Most people will never know what someone is carrying mentally.

A smile can hide fear, illness, exhaustion, anxiety, pressure, and survival mode.

I know because I lived it.

Years ago, my life changed completely after being diagnosed with aggressive multiple myeloma. At the same time, I was trying to survive emotionally, stay present as a father, navigate custody battles, and hold myself together while my body stopped feeling like my own.

One thing I learned during that period is that survival rarely looks inspirational while you’re living through it.

Most of the time, it looks quiet.

It looks like getting through another appointment.

Another sleepless night.

Another morning where you have to convince yourself to keep moving.

That experience eventually became the foundation for my memoir, Rise Anyway.

It’s a short but deeply personal book about illness, anxiety, fatherhood, survival, emotional rebuilding, and learning how to continue even when life feels heavy.

One lesson stayed with me through all of it:

You do not have to feel strong to keep going.
