I was reading about poverty in the U.S. and one thing above all else has become overwhelmingly clear to me: The war on women being waged by conservative pro-life groups isn't a "moral" discussion. It's economic. Poverty in America is increasingly being feminized, and unplanned pregnancies are at the heart of this change. Since 1965, young, single-mother families are the number one contributor to growth in American poverty and we still have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the developed world. Most single mothers go on welfare, and children of single moms are more likely to drop out of school, maintaining this cycle of poverty. Girls with one parent are more likely to be single mothers themselves and begin this cycle on their own. Regarding women's rights, the next time you hear anyone talking about what God would want, move the conversation to something that's more rational and, frankly, more relevant. Women's rights issues are about economics and quality of life first, not morality. Many of you will be familiar with Maslow's hierarchy of needs, where the most important needs must be taken care of before one is able to deal with successive needs. The most important needs are food and shelter. The very last thing people are allowed to develop (according to the hierarchy) is morality. You can't put someone in a position where they are unable to survive without assistance, then feel outraged that they don't conform to some moral standard. In this regard, pro-lifers are perpetuating the very problem that they purport to stand against. When pro-choice proponents say there is a war being waged against women, this may seem like hyperbole, but it isn't. Women are biologically set up to bear the pregnancy and are therefore totally stuck with the consequences of either bad luck or a bad decision made by two people (except in cases of rape). It's not fair and in this day and age, anyone who still supports a system that perpetuates this ongoing victimization is wrong.
