he’s not in the best mood. the day spent fixing some wizard’s screwup took most of the energy out of him. he pulls out a cigarette and pats around for his lighter. aish. too frustrated to care, he snaps a flame to thumb and lights the paper. he breathes deeply, the slight burn to his throat all too welcoming. a puff of smoke fills his vision, slowly mingling with the air. ash flicks to the ground as he continues his aimless walking. a grumble of a stomach makes him halt. he checks back into reality, looking at his surroundings. many of the buildings he recognizes as neutral ground. he’s come to know them out of preference to anywhere fully magi or fully human. he’s the outcast, doomed to never fit in with magi or humans as long as the stupid conflict continued. sighing, jaejun puts out his cig with his boot before heading towards the corner bar.
he settles onto his usual barstool, a small nod given to the bartender in greeting. some top-song plays low in the background mixed with the low hum of other customers. a bar shouldn’t be where he goes to unwind and yet it is. it’s why he shouldn’t be left to his own devices sometimes. aside from his late mother, only one person ever cared about his drinking habits. he groans at himself. no, he wasn’t going to go down that memory lane, again. it’s bad enough he’d run into her nearly a month ago. years carefully avoiding her at crocus all for chance to throw her literally in front of him. ( he’d nearly knocked her over on his way to the store. ) it was only one run in – it’s fine.
wrong.
jaejun nearly spits his beer as he hears a familiar voice. huh, the universe was really out to get him. he doesn’t dare turn his head, trying to keep his face concealed in his hoodie. downing his beer he mentally calculates how quickly he can book it out of the bar without looking awkward.
sunhi loved her job ... most days.
being a healer was about as rewarding as it was absolutely exhausting, and only six months into her practical training she was already feeling the tiredness catching up to her. normally she would be fine dealing with people all day --- she had a strong stomach, so patching up some broken bones or disinfecting disgusting wounds had little to no effect on her. what did drain her, however, was the children. they hated checkups more than anything else on the planet, it seemed, and unfortunately for her she got to deal with their wrath as they took their frustrations out on her. whether it be crying, screaming, biting, hitting ... by this point she had experienced it all, and it was growing tiresome. there was nothing she wanted more than to just get her field certification and quit, but it wasn’t that easy.
normally bars weren’t her scene. she had never been much of a drinker, and the few times she did she preferred doing it in the comfort of her own home ( preferably in the bath, with a book ). however, today called for some major decompression after her hellish day at work, and a bar seemed like just the place for it.
she greeted the bartender cheerfully as she entered, making her way through the abundance of tables and over to the bar top. once she was seated on the stool ( feet dangling above the floor --- god these stools were high ) she let out a long breath before ordering. it was unlike her to be so ... not talkative, but until she had finished the first bottle of beer she just didn’t have the energy to say much of anything. once it was in her system, though, and more cleansing breaths were taken, she felt herself returning to normal. the person seated beside her was awfully quiet, hood up with body angled away from her as they sipped carefully at their drink. she almost couldn’t help the way she leaned further over the counter, neck craning in attempt to get a peek at whoever it was. the profile looked ... familiar, and with little care for the fact that you shouldn’t just touch people without their permission, sunhi found herself gently removing the person’s hood and tapping them on the shoulder.
it took a moment of looking at them before she realized where she recognized them from. eyes widened, mouth opening into a small o before she spoke.
“ oh ! you’re the guy who almost trampled me at the supermarket. i thought i recognized you from somewhere !! ” her voice is probably a bit too enthusiastic given their last encounter, but she can’t help it. “ i’m not sure if you remember that, but i’ve got a thing for remembering faces and yours would be ... hard to forget. ”
formality grabs hold of her for a moment, and she straightens up, shoving her hand out towards the other. “ sunhi ! nice to see you again not from on the ground surrounded by broken eggs. ”
