I came back from the dead (again) to say that I think it's hilarious that James THINKS he has a brain tumor rather than the writers just outright giving him one because this time two years ago I had a migraine that lasted for ten whole days and I legit thought I was going to drop dead any second but it turns out I was totally fine...
I came back from the dead to say that I accidentally watched a James x Ste scene and I actually really dig their current dynamic and I am so so disappointed in myself
caught between a rock (my lack of desire to forgive HO for what they did to Harry) and a hard place (my overwhelming need to see James and Liam be the trash kings that they are)
With 18 days left until I submit my doctorate, my latest crazy au idea is set in 1730s London where “Mother” Marnie runs a brothel, James is the corrupt Justice of the Peace who keeps the authorities off her back, and Harry is the house’s star attraction. Harry is trying to scrape together enough money so that he can persuade James to run away with him, but when a new Society for the Reformation of Manners, lead by the evangelical Breda McQueen, sets their sights on the brothels, Harry’s life and those of all he cares about are suddenly in danger...
If any of you were worried that HO has made you look like a clown, my last week went something like this:
Smug conviction that Tony's vision was him seeing Harry irl and confirmation that Harry is alive and also being held by Breda
Crushing disappointment that this was not the case after all
Resigned acceptance that Harry wont be coming back and realisation that I don't actually want him too if HO are going to make me suffer McNight/Starry
Conspiratorial confusion at Digital Spy's insistence that Harry could and should come back with realisation that they've never made such a list for a non "rumoured to return" character
I WISH I KNEW PEACE
AU where Harry and James are actors in a show playing characters who are clearly very in love with each other but never get the chance to be together. They have a huge fandom following obsessed with their ship and a slightly smaller fandom that is convinced Harry and James are secretly together. They watch BTS vids and look at footage of the awards ceremony where James unexpectedly wins to gush over their relationship and how much they adore each other. Harry and James take it completely in their stride and are happy to indulge the fans who are so invested in them. But what no one knows is just how right the fans are about their IRL relationship...
Except, they’re not together really - they’re strictly “no strings”. When the show is cancelled and Harry’s character is killed off *cries* everyone expects him to be pining after James. But while James continues to have a fairly successful career, Harry’s rise to fame is meteoric and very quickly the fans stop asking teasing questions about how much he enjoys working with James and how much fun they seemed to be having in BTS footage and Harry’s vlog.
It makes James sick.
Sick enough to move to London. Sick enough to persuade his agent to get him an audition for a show that he knows Harry will be involved in.
When Harry walks into the chemistry read with an expectant and glassy-eyed James staring up at him, he suddenly has to question just how no-strings they were after all...

Something I think is neat and really cute about fanfic is that there’s a personal version of each character in it? Like, each writer focuses on different traits and qualities and even though there can be a hundred fics with the same character, they’re really not exactly the same.
So even if you and I are writing a fic with the same characters, they can still be uniquely different despite having the same core and they’re each dear to us personally as our take on the person.
I don’t know, I just think it’s cute that each writer cherishes these characters in personal and unique ways.
This is the heart of the Two Cakes rule
It really is.
What’s more, every reader who’s read more than one version of a character has their internal perception of that character enriched by the versions of that character written by those authors.
And those are the result of every version of the character in every fic the authors have read.
It’s a massive progression towards complexity and realism for the character in the minds of the storytellers.
In a way, it’s Infinite Cakes.

I’ve got a few things planned for this week - so stay tuned!
The whole plan for this week was to celebrate jarry on the same week as Chester pride. While I know that holding up Hollyoaks as a bastion of queer representation is a bit disingenuous at the moment, these prompts were planned before we even knew about Sadie, let alone everything else. But even though canon has destroyed the dreams we had for this pairing, this doesn’t take away from the joy we had - both from the amazing scenes we had on screen and all the fabulous fanworks that James and Harry/Parry and Greg inspired, and the community of people that loved them.
So let’s celebrate that!
