This article looked at how music is important of adolescents. They talk a lot about how adolescents use music to create a personality for themselves. It also helps with who they hangout with. They can dress like the artists that they like and find people that they relate to through music.

This article works well in my paper because it helps with my argument. There are very strong stands taken in this article that make a lot of sense because music is so influential to our society. Also because it reflects our society it makes sense that adolescents would relate closely to music and find who they are though the music they listen to.

Annotation #5:

16 and Pregnant: A content analysis of a reality television program about unplanned teen pregnancy.,

In this particular article they talk about how they analyzed the content of the show to determine the themes viewers were exposed too as well as reproductive health information, messages about sex, safer sex/condoms and contraception. Some of the themes included lack of support especially from teen fathers, sacrifice of activities previously enjoyed, difficulty following career and education plans and the surprise about the difficulties of parenting. Three study team members watched 3 seasons of 16 and pregnant separately and collected data about the shows content. The results that they came up with is that all pregnancies were unplanned, three episodes included a teen who put their baby up for adoption, and none of the episodes featured a teen who chose abortion. In its conclusion the authors say that although the show realistically portrays the struggles and hardships of teen parenting, it shows little information about safer sex/condoms, contraception and sex in general. It says it also ignores abortion as a legitimate option and omits a crucial part of the teens life.

“Doutzen Kroes: Even I’m not a Sample Size in Real Life.” Huff post Style. Web. Sept 09, 2013.

This is where Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes admits she doesn’t look like her modeling pictures like she does in real life. She admits that she is a big part to insecurity of some girls because of her job. Describing from with the help of lighting, retouching, and makeup it makes her look much different. She also describes models are much skinnier than the average women.

This contributes a lot to the lack of authenticity. If these models are looked up to by young women and they don’t even look like their pictures how is it fair for young females to think that that is obtainable. Also sizes of models are much different than that of the average women.

This video has a man playing what is considered to be the oldest written song that we can find from the 1400 century. Now considering it takes a lot of effort to carve words in to stone that can last at least 3500 years it should be safe to assume that this was a fairly significant piece of music to this culture. I have no idea of the instruments time frame or how well the musician can play but if it is at all what it is meant to sound like we can see a stark change in music from then to today, as this does not fit into any current genre. We know instruments have not always existed it is not a great logical leap to say that vocal music was different too and with such a dramatic change in just 3500 years’ music from the beginning of humanity may be completely unrecognizable. This is good for my paper because it helps me prove a point that music may have needed another push to evolve with humans its bad because if this is the furthest back I can go I may not completely prove this to everyone.

Gadet, Steve. (2015). Hip Hop Culture. Caribbean Quarterly, Vol. 61 Issue 1, p75-97. 23p

This article talks about how ever since the 1980s, hip-hop has become a cultural product that is being sold and bought all over the world. Also how Hip-hop culture, mostly through rap music, became a legal way to escape from social exclusion and poverty for a category of young people in America and in Europe. It also talks about how this culture gives them a specific language, a common notion of authenticity, common values and common landmarks that transcend their own ethnic and cultural heritage. Lastly it talks about hip hop culture in/on the different Caribbean islands, and how it differs.

I think that that this journal article will be useful in my paper because it talks about hip hop culture moved to the Caribbean islands and how globalization does not hinder a cultural movement from having a local and unique shape. In helping us to grasp the relationship between music, local and popular culture.

Rothman, KJ. “BMI related errors in the measurement of obesity” International Journal of Obesity. Print. 2008.

There are many big issues with the current BMI chart making it invalid. Main ones are it’s only based off of height and weight aside from other important factors like changes with age, muscle mass loss and gain, and gender. Thus the study concluded that BMI isn’t an accurate form of detecting ones health.

It’s argued some countries are creating policies that models must meet the BMI chart in order to be considered a model by law. However if that standard is inaccurate and based off this study is too low because of the issue with false obesity readings than argument is invalid.

This article focuses on how artists sell their music. The author talks a lot about how sex came into music videos as a way to attract viewers and get attention. He did a lot of research on MTV and many other music related shows and how they were good tools artists used to grab the attention of fans. Cummins claims that you are more likely to buy the music after you see the video. The appeal of the video can make someone like the song itself even more than they did before. Now that they have a visual of the song it will seem more appealing also to the listener (Cummins, 2007).

This is a great article for my paper because it takes the idea that sex is a helpful tool that an artist can use to enhance their music video and help sell the song. It makes the music video more appealing to those that are watching it. It gives the artist character also and a persona amongst their fans. It could be a way for the artist to relate to their fans, or it can be the way that people view the artist as (their personality).

Annotation 9: Blog Post

My final paper is about society putting too much pressure on women to have a perfect body. I was talking with my co-worker about this because her son has pressure put on him about his body. My co-worker was saying that she’s never been comfortable with her body so she lacks confidence. Her teenage son is showing some of these signs also. She was saying that she’ll catch him saying things like, “my butt looks too big in these jeans” when they go out shopping and trying outfits on. This ties in with the discussion of my paper because it shows that it isn’t just women that feel pressures from society, men feel it also.

This article is about Christie Swadling obsessed with Victoria’s Secret models lead to extreme dieting and anorexia. Spending times in the hospital slowly killing her. She ends the article after recovering from her eating disorder saying these models sizes are both unsustainable and unachievable.

This is a real life young female who has experienced first handedly the idea of Victoria’s Secret models and not only thinking that they are perfection but further acting on it and putting herself at many health risks. Even she had a hard time in managing and keeping up with this.

This scholarly article is a study on younger children and their perception of cyber bullying. The article states that they found results and 35% of third, fourth and fifth graders had their own cellphone, 11.4% recorded that they have received a mean or hurtful text message, and 45.6% recorded that they have been bullied in school. This shows that children have been bullied and have had the courage to tell someone about it.

I will be able to use this in my paper because it shows that children aren’t ready for cell phones at such a young age. There is no reason for a child that young to be worried about receiving an email or text message and being bullied online. The result of this study says that “students are provided with technology at young ages and receive very little guidance to protect them from cyber bullying.” This statement shows that there are many children who are receiving cell phones at young ages and the parents aren’t carefully watching what they are getting into. They don’t have the common knowledge like older children do. There are a lot of things that could go wrong, one is being cyber bullied and this study is a perfect example of it.

Lindenbaum, J. (1999, April 8). Music Sampling and Copyright Law.

This journal gives a brief history of music sampling focusing on mainly hip- hop artist because of the culture and the need of mixing and spinning songs together. It also talks about the copyright laws and how they come into play with music sampling. This journal really narrows down on how songs are considered to be illegally sampled as well as listing examples of some rappers that has illegally used someone else’s material in their work. 

This journal will help me in my paper because it will help me explain why the  that the new generation use samples of songs in their work is considered authentic in the way the use them and the creditation that they give to those artist that the material is sampled from. It also has examples of rappers in the older generation that has used sampling illegally and it will help me strengthen my argument in favor of the newer generation technique.

ANAD (national association of anorexia nervosa and associated disorders. They took a survey of how media affected perception and dieting in young girls and also more percentages concerning the idea. They concluded American females in advertisement only take up a small amount of population body type and young females younger than 18 years old wanted to lose weight from magazines, magazine pictures influence a perfect body, they wanted to be thinner, and were afraid of being fat.

This can help me in my paper because providing how easily influenced young females are especially when it comes to magazines in which Victoria’s Secret models model in it shows how much it affects their own and society’s version of what a body is supposed to look like. By adding the actual small percent of females who are actually that size also shows how unrealistic it is.

This video basically talks about the gang violence in Compton California and how they are a lot of bloods that surround and live in Compton. It explains how in black young man name Kendrick Lamar avoided the gang life and became a famous celebrity rapper that raps about the struggle of coming from nothing and making it out of Compton or Bompton as it is said in the video.

I could use this video in paper because it describe how you don’t necessarily have to live that stereotypical rich life to gain attention from society and become a celebrity. As you see here in the video Kendrick does not walk around with five gold chains and a new Lamborghini to show that he is a celebrity. He has millions but that does not define a celebrity and it certainly is not why people like him so much. the like him because him raps about true life stories and struggles that a black boy living in bompton goes through.

Dittmar, Helga, Halliwell, Emma, Ive, Suzanne. “Does Barbie make girls want to be thin? The effect of experimental exposure to images of dolls on the body image of 5 to 8 year olds.” American Psychological Association. Print. March 2006.

This is a study done on a group of girls from 5- 8 years old that a portion was exposed to Barbie dolls. Of the portion exposed to Barbie dolls had lower body esteem and wanted to be thinner. In conclusion they addressed in the article the fact that these non-living figures have such a big impact so do people. By exposing them at a young age to unrealistic thin body ideal it can damage their body image which can lead to eating disorders.

Victoria’s Secret models are perceived to be like Barbie dolls when considering them being well known and the idea of perfection. This also shows how children being exposed to this can damage their developmental process into adulthood.

This Youtube video notes the many changes the movie Star Wars: A New Hope has received through its many media renditions, with the most common comparisons being between the theatrical release and the 2011 Blu-ray edition. It takes an objective approach by comparing the changes scene-to-scene, indicating either sound changes, design changes, or dialogue changes. The uploader of the video makes it clear that the first movie in this trilogy has had the most changes of the three movies, with there being minor, prominent, and even infamous changes.

This set of videos helps to illustrate a point about the objectionable use behind CGI in movies like this. It may also help serve as a point behind the minor uses for CGI, such as basic touch-ups to make the scenes look cleaner or more refined, but scenes like the introduction to Jabba the Hutt provide evidence against digital refining just as well. Overall, this set of videos as well as the changes behind the other movies (the uploader, Marcelo Zuniga, has more videos on the other movies) serves as some evidence in either case of the argument behind practical effects and CGI effects.

This article from the Journal of Business Ethics, seeks to explain the government’s role in business. It describes the relationship between business and government, and how the government’s actions affect business via regulation, etc. The article describes the government as having four roles in business, framework, business partner, interfering and advocate. Each role has distinct outcomes and effects on business. The article states the the government’s role in protecting consumers has been limited. 

This article has a lot of useful information on how government and business interact. It also has information regarding the impacts of this interaction as well as showing how government has strayed from its traditional role of protecting the rights of consumers in favor of regulation and business partnerships. I could use bits of information for my research however this article is largely focused on business aspects and not necessarily political ones. For this reason the majority of the article will not be helpful but some of it will be.

I really like this paper topic it was something I was interested in researching before picking my paper. I think alot of businesses especially now adays are more greedy and the realness behind their products and customer wants are questioned. You should also research how it has changed over time
