Merely referring to one’s ‘gay friend’ or 'black coworker’ is a way of tokenizing or otherizing someone. In doing so, the speaker reveals that he or she conceives of race or sexuality as central to identity. Further, in reinforcing this notion, the speaker is making the world a place wherein one’s race and sexuality are somehow more than just that, making these characteristics more relevant to our conceptions of self than they otherwise would have been, central to identity simply because our community deems it so. Which is why such things are not done in polite society. When it comes to gender, on the other hand, the language has traditionally presented no elegant alternative. We are forced to clumsily dance around the matter, or to give in and refer to our coworkers, students and friends as 'he’ or 'she.’ The result is that our language caps our ability to be progressive in this realm, forces us to immediately characterize people as male or female, associates other aspects of their personalities with their sex and, in doing so, makes it an inseparable part of how we perceive ourselves and each other, far more so than any other random biological feature or accident of birth. It is so hard to distinguish words from their potentially sexist intentions or applications because sexism necessarily pervades our language. It is literally impossible to say what, exactly, it is that many of us are 'trying to say.’

Throughout history and across cultures, women and girls have faced innumerable challenges and injustices. Our Poverty Is Sexist report emphasizes the urgent need to unleash the social, political and economic potential of women everywhere and the importance of dismantling the barriers that prevent so many living healthy and productive lives. In support of the #WithStrongGirls campaign, we take a moment to look at 12 women who overcame adversity, broke through barriers and in doing so, changed the world.

I think it’s important to see who the youth are looking up to for inspiration. Who has been left out? What do you think they could contribute to our society? These are questions I would like to see the students answer.

After reading about these legendary women, you'll know you can contribute towards the society no matter what - you don't need to be in a specific field, time or environment to make a difference to the world in this lifetime.

This week I am featuring a list of inspirational women that have changed history. I noticed that often women are overlooked in history for their accomplishments. I want this page to be inclusive and educational, and believe we should highlight the accomplishments these women have made to change our world.

Supporters say this removes the ‘chill factor’ for LGBT employees of schools in Ireland, where almost all schools are religiously run.

Last week, Ireland’s Parliament passed a bill that will ban discrimination against LGBT teachers — and considering most schools in Ireland are religiously-affiliated, that’s a really big deal. The Senate had already approved it, so now it’s up to the president to sign it.

The bill amends Section 37 of the republic’s Employment Equality Act, which allowed schools and hospitals to “take action” to prevent employees from “undermining the religious ethos of the institution.”

The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network said this section of the law had a “chilling effect” in religious schools.

“This bill is the key piece of the legislative map that will allow LGBT people to be themselves, get married and have a family without a threat to their job if they work in a religious run institution,” said Sandra Irwin-Gowran, director of education policy at GLEN.
