“Is this your way of flirting, Rae? You’re all Quidditch talk aren’t you?”

She would have loved to play, really. But she also loved being on the sidelines yelling at her housemates.

Rae laughed at that. “Excuse me madam, I am an upstanding individual! I would never try to court someone outside of the proper rituals,” they joked, flipping their hair. “While I do have a fair amount of quidditch talk, I am also a treasure trove of information and conversation across the board! Name it, and I could probably tell you a thing or two.”

Rae laughed at that. “Too bad. You’ve got the build to play,” they said, lifting up one of Jessie’s arms. “Maybe not a beater. Keeper? S’pose chaser could work too.”

She smiled, sure, she was a staunch Gryffindor and anyone-versing-Slytherin kinda gal but the enthusiasm was overwhelming

“All the games are their own kind of great. I just have more stakes in the Gryff games”

They were grinning to themselves, still on a kick from their grandiose perception of the world around them. But Jessie’s comments have them coming back down. “’Course you do. You Gryffs are always either die hard athletes or die hard fans. You just happened to have chose the latter.”

“Oooh come on, don’t be such a sourpuss. I’m sure you’ll get ‘em next time. Next match is bound to be pretty exciting considering y’all are going up against Slytherin. The two big rivals at it again after a long summer.”

“What, Wonder Boy? He’ll be fine. A Dopplebeater Defense is a nasty move, but Ravenclaw knew they needed it if they were going to take out Gryffindor’s big gun. And trust me, Ravenclaw always knows.” As the quidditch announcer, they weren’t supposed to show any bias towards their own house, but they just couldn’t help it sometimes.

Silver raises his eyebrows. “Really? That’s what we’re going with?” He rubs a hand across his white stubble. “No, we don’t have class right now. Also, in the future, just a suggestion, try not to show up to ‘class’ in yer pajamas.” 

He limps closer to the pair. “Try something better this time.” 

Rae gasps deeply, slapping a hand over their heart. “Excuse you, Professor! These pants are made with only the finest materials, from Madam Malkin herself!” They assert. “They’re so comfortable, I just happen to sleep in them.”

However, they had a feeling this wasn’t going to last forever. So they just came clean. “She was missing her Cotton Candy, sir!” They gestured dramatically towards CC and the pygmy puff peeking out of her bag. “How were we supposed to sleep at night knowing this poor, poor, brightly colored rodent might be picked up by the first owl who came across it? We had to find it! Can’t you sympathize with the deep, eternal bond between a child and their genetically mutated freak of nature?”

It’s Tulio’s turn to roll his eyes. “Yeah, that will end well for you, surely.” He wanders over to Geraldine and rights her so that her straw body is back in position. He ducks behind the dummy and raises her hand that is clasped around a stick. In a high pitched voice he says. “My great-grandma could jinx better than you and she’s been dead since the Inquisition!” Tulio-Geraldine wiggles their wand around menacingly. 

Tulio steps out from behind the dummy and gasps. “What cruel words! I mean, it is a completely fair and true statement, but cruel nonetheless!” 

Rae smirks devilishly and bounces back and forth on the strip on the balls of their feet. In their opinion, it’s always way more fun dueling against a real person. In that regards, they deflate like a balloon when Tulio grabs the dummy and puts it back in place. They cock an eyebrow at Tulio-Geraldine’s ventriloquist performance, but they can’t help the smirk that follows. Alright, maybe he could be some fun. But they’d get him yet.

“Is that so? Well she better hope to stay dead!” Apparently not caring whether or not their jab made any sense, they cast another spell towards “the dummy”. However, considering it was a Tickling Hex, the spell wouldn’t affect the dummy. Should all go according to plan, it would bounce off its head and rocket straight towards the actual “dummy” they were targeting.

“I’m doing okay, legs still feel shaky.” She giggles and smiles as she slowly stands up, leaning against the wall a bit. 

“Yeah the stairs are a really big obstacle.” she smiles more at them before walking towards the window, looking up at the sky. 

“But the best part getting up those stairs……you get to see the beautiful view of the stars.” She smiles more as she looks up. 

John Silver is not unused to seeing teenagers sneaking up into the Astronomy tower. It seems like at least once every night he catches a pair of kids either making out or angsting under the stars. He hadn’t known there were hooligans in his tower when he began his ascent; Silver did, himself, enjoy midnight stargazing. 

So to say he was not surprised to open the hatch of the tower and discover CC and Rae was an understatement. 

“What are ye two doin’ up here?” He says, bemused. 

Rae is about to follow CC outside and take a look at the stars when the hatch opens. They jolt and spin around but much to their relief, it wasn’t the caretaker back for their revenge. That would be hard to deal with. Professor Silver? Professor Silver is easy.

“Oh heeeyyyy Professor! Where’s the rest of class huh? Or did I get the date and time of class wrong again?” They lied, leaning against one of the tables.

“I–! you–!” Tulio sputters, climbing to his feet and dusting himself off. “It never hurts to be prepared!” He pauses for a moment. “Also fuck you!” He says this, but immediately lines up behind Rae again and lifts their arm up to point at the practice dummy. “try again and I swear to god if you don’t keep your wand movement sharper I will kill you myself and you’ll never have to worry about Dark Wizards.” 

Rae can’t help but snort a little at the added insult. Tulio makes the mistake of moving behind them, so they can’t see their hilarious silent mocking impression of him, though their head is doing quite a bit of waggling. “Oh shit you got me shaking in my extremely fashionable boots.”

They literally shake themselves out, hopping from foot to foot as they prepare themselves. Finally, they lift their wands and flick it towards the dummy, fast and tight. The Knockback Jinx doesn’t hit it dead on like it’s supposed to, but a hit to the shoulder does send it spinning off the strip in a sideways direction, then they turn to Tulio. “There. Made some room for you! Come on buddy, how ‘bout you put your money where your mouth is?”

CC did her best to run until the other grabbed her and quickly pulled her in the room. She kept looking behind her as they ran upstairs making sure the caretaker wasn’t there right behind them.

She pants, her back to the wall as she slides down to the floor, her legs felt like needles. She smiles back at them happy that they lost the caretaker.

“I….I think so too” she whispers back, breathing heavily, still catching her breath. She started to giggle a bit.

When the girl giggles, Rae does too, laughing in between pants. They push themselves off the wall, pressing their hands against their back as they stretch. “Not bad for a couple of ne’er-do-wells eh?” They laugh. “Astronomy Tower is the best place to hide, granted it’s not on a school night. Nobody likes climbing up all those stairs to chase you.”

They turn back to CC on the ground, looking her over. “How you holding up?”

CC froze a bit before she quickly follows them down the corridor.

“W…wait….” she says nervously as she does her best to keeps up with them. Hearing the footsteps follow them, their speed getting faster and the footsteps louder. 

“W….we need to hide” she suggested to them as she tries to remember what was down the corridor. wondering if there was anywhere to hide from the care taker. 

Rae does not wait, instead booking it down the corridor. They look back behind them sometimes to make sure that the Hufflepuff is behind them and that the caretaker is not. Still, they have a wild grin on their face, suggesting that they’re quite enjoying this terrible twist of events.

“Yeah, you’re right. In here!” They say, grabbing the girl by the hand and pulling her into the first door they find. It leads to a stairwell, one likely familiar to the students, but Rae doesn’t stop to think about it. Instead, they bound up the stairs, dragging poor CC along by the hand. Eventually they make it all the way to the top, and its revealed that they’d just climbed the Astronomy Tower. 

Once they got there, Rae plastered themselves against the wall next to a storage cabinet, waiting and listening. If the caretaker knew where they’d gone, they’d hear the door open up at the bottom of the stairs. But no such noise came. “I think we lost ‘em,” they whispered, giving their partner in crime a devious grin.

She looks up at them a bit confused but she soon nods understanding the history of the creature. She giggles a little and nods again as she puts Cotton Candy in her bag and started to lead the way to the kitchen. She always kept her promise to someone.

“So what do you feel like eating then? I want to know so I can make sure the kitchen has the right ingredients.” she says with a sweet smiles as she skips to the kitchen happy to have found her friend without getting in to much trouble. 

Rae walks alongside her, still waving the light of their wand back and forth even though they aren’t looking for anything anymore. “Well, what you really got me in the mood for now is cotton candy. Do you think Hogwarts has a cotton candy machine? You know, wizards have been trying to use spells to--” They stop suddenly.

“Shh!” They hush, putting a finger over CC’s lips, even though they were the one who had been talking. They narrow their eyes and stick the light of their wand upwards, but that’s when both Rae and CC can hear it--footsteps.

“Oh shit, it’s the fuzz! Beat it!” They hiss before running off down another corridor. Their footsteps echo loudly down the hall, revealing their location to their pursuer, who shouts out, “Hey!” It’s the castle caretaker, making their rounds down the halls as they did every night. So much for not getting in trouble.

Tulio manages to hit the ground fast enough to avoid being slammed hard in the face with a Kick-Back Jinx. He glares at Rae from the floor, hair in disarray. “Oh yes, I’m sure the Dark Wizards will be completely thrown off when you knock yourself out without them needing to lift a wand!” He slowly clambers to his feet and dusts off his pants. “Do me a favor, okay? The next time you wanna try that, wait until Miguel is the one leading the tutorial!” 

Rae just watches him from the ground, seemingly unperturbed that they nearly knocked out the leader of this whole event. They tossed some hair behind their shoulder and shifted their weight. “Well hey, at least Miguel knows how to have a little fun. Come on Ponytail, why so serious? When’s the last time you’ve even seen a Dark Wizard, let alone dueled one?”

She giggles and nods as they got closer to the dorm, shining their lights around. Soon they spot something pink and fluffy by the door, it looked like it was trying to find a way in. 

“Cotton Candy.” she says, the fluff ball turns to face them before running towards them. CC kneels down and picks it up and pets it. 

“You had me worried.” she sighs but smiles as she looks up at you. 

“Thank you for your help, and like I promise I can make you something to eat.” She says with a smile as the fluff ball starts to purr.

Rae was secretly grateful that the fluffball hadn’t managed to find a way in. They’d be pretty annoyed to be outsmarted by what essentially was cotton candy. They crossed their arms as the creature ran up, tilting their head. “Awww. Adorable little freak of nature, ain’t it?” They glanced at the girl, who likely wasn’t too keen on the comment. “What? It’s true. Pygmy puffs aren’t natural creatures, they were bred by wizards to be as brightly and obnoxiously colored as possible. There was a case about them violating the Ban on Experimental Breeding, but since they’re no more dangerous than their puffskein ancestors, the charges didn’t hold up. So now they’re free to be bred and sold to fulfill everyone’s pink, fluffy, fantasies.”

With that, they clap their hands. “Alrighty! Should we head to the kitchens then?”
