(hey siri play shame by mitski)
Itās the little thingsā¦
Like how Bobby tells them, āYouāre bickering like an old married couple.ā Insulting to a couple of brothers, right? Not to Dean and Sam who just shrug it off. Actually, Dean goes a step further and tells Bobby theyāre even more than that because married couples can get a divorce and effectively part ways whereas parting ways is not an option for them⦠being apart is not on the table.
āSee, married couples can get divorced. Me and him? Weāre like Siamese twins,ā Dean says, which Sam quickly corrects.
āItās conjoined twins!ā
āSee what I mean?ā AnĀ exasperatedĀ Dean asks Bobby, who is well-versedĀ in their co-dependent ways.
Yes, Dean. We see exactly what you mean.
Itās the little thingsā¦
Like when Dean and Sam pick up Molly, the ghost who doesnāt realize sheās dead, on the side of the road, she starts telling them about her husband. She tells them about the fight they had when she last saw him and says, āItās the only time we really argue⦠when weāre stuck in the car,ā to which Sam replies, āYeah, I know how that goes!ā and Dean gives him a look.
She continues, āYou know the last thing I said to him? I called him a jerk!ā
Sound familiar? It should. Itās what Sam calls Dean. Itās how Dean and Sam speak to each other. Itās how they interact. Itās their lives. And Sam didnāt hesitate for a second to compare his relationship with Dean to Molly and Davidās marriage. Not even for a second.

@fandom-hoarder johndean au?
for wincest wednesday this week, I offer you this humble little snippet from a red meat wip that I'll never finish:
āYou stay, you fight, you die,ā Corbin says, and yeah, thatās the whole fucking point. But then he says, āPlease, help us,ā and Dean looks at Sam, and he knows. Knows exactly the way his little brotherās expression would twist, bright-eyed, that deep wrinkle between his eyebrows. Knows exactly the sound of the breath that would leave him, heavy with dutyāthe look heād give Dean to make him concede. Knows exactly what Sam would do. He looks at Samās smooth, expressionless face, and can hear him say, save them first. I can wait a little longer.
āIām gonna come back for you,ā he says. Like Sam is ten years old and Dean is leaving on a hunt for the weekend. He brushes a stray hair behind Samās ear, savoring his skin while itās still warm. āI promise.ā
It's a promise he's made a thousand times before. Sometimes he kept it, sometimes not.
If Sam could, heād nod. His hair would fall into his eyes, like it always did. āI know,ā heād say, because he always believed him, even when Dean was lying through his teeth.
Always trusted him, his little brother. And look where itās gotten him.
Sam doesnāt say anything.
He leans down, presses a kiss to Samās foreheadāclammy, covered in a cooling sheen of sweat, his hair greasy at the roots. Dean doesnāt have any tears to shed. He already feels wrung dry.
Happy Wincest Wednesday!
Here's one I should have asked a long time ago. What are your interpretations/headcanons regarding the pilot line, "You know, in almost two years I've never bothered you, never asked you for a thing?"
And if you want to tangent into any other Stanford-era wincest headcanons, I certainly wouldn't complain.
- @schizosamwincester
Oooh, yes!
When considered with Dean's line from when they were in the apartment just before that, "If I'd'a called, would you have picked up?" I always assumed that they had sort of kept in touch during Sam's first year or two at school, but then something happened and Sam stopped calling and stopped answering when Dean called. Now, it's total headcanon territory as to what sort of contact they'd had and what finally caused Sam to stop answering but I tend to think that they likely only talked on the phone, that Dean didn't actually visit Sam at school (at least not that Sam was aware of), simply because Dean didn't seem to know much of anything about Sam's time at school. So I think they talked on the phone. Odds are good that Dean gave him a hard time about being gone, though, and likely tried to get Sam to come back. Unsurprisingly, I don't think Sam took that well, which is why he eventually started avoiding Dean's calls (hello, Sam is a LOT like John) and why, after a while, Dean stopped calling at all.
Now, if we're just spinning off into Wincest (because why not) then I like to think that the tension between them had reached an unsustainable pitch prior to Sam leaving, but remained unaddressed and unresolved. That same tension carried through to their sporadic phone calls, both of them longing to say more than they ever let themselves say. But inevitably, Dean would start trying to get Sam to leave school and come back to hunting, to the family, to him. Dean left him voicemails sometimes in the middle of the night, Sam would find them waiting the next day, and in them, Dean was often drunk and would start needling Sam about coming back, but they were hard to follow because he started and stopped and changed his mind about what he was saying frequently. Sam never mentioned those messages when they did talk. And when they did talk, Sam never told Dean that one of the reasons he couldn't come back was Dean and all the things that Sam could keep from saying over the phone. On the phone, Sam couldn't see Dean so he couldn't stare too hard or too long. He couldn't touch Dean, not a casual bump of their shoulders or "accidental" brush of their hands. It made it easier. And then Sam met Jessica. She was everything he thought he should want, beautiful, smart, funny, creative, loving, and he let himself get caught up in the infatuation of young love for the first time without all the baggage of his family (of Dean). She was good and pure and he always told himself that he would call Dean back the next day, and then the next, and then maybe after finals, and... Two years can go by really fast that way and it was hard to feel too guilty when he believed that Dean was better off without him. Dean knew what he was doing and had Dad to hunt with, what did he really need Sam for? Sam was good at research, and he could handle himself in a fight, but what he felt towards Dean wasn't right and it wasn't good. No, both of them moving on would be for the best. So when Dean showed up that night, when he said he hadn't bothered Sam or asked him for anything in two years, that was how long it had been since Dean had stopped trying to call.
I wanted to do more mermaid!sam before May ends. Now heās with his prince charming Dean.

Sera gamble on Sam and Ruby
Were you nervous about the reaction to Sam and Dean's relationship going in this difficult direction? I mean, I'm reading things like, "Sam and Dean will go to war!" First of all, can you say if that's true, and second, is it hard to take the relationship in that direction?
Gamble: As to where exactly Sam and Dean's relationship is headed, I have to kind of say, tune in and find out.
But it's true that their relationship has been fraying and has been different since Dean got out of Hell. They spent that time apart. Sam was with Ruby, he was suicidal. Dean was in Hell. They were very changed. They got back together and it wasn't quite the same. And a lot of this season has been about the ways in which they can't connect any more.
We're conscious of that. And we're not scared of it. We're writing stories about it. We're writing stories about, what happens when the person you connected the most with, that you relied on, the relationship that was always solid -- what do you do when that's changed and you can't get back to where you were before? I think that's incredibly frustrating for both the brothers.
I need to take a few sentences to gush over "I Know What You Did Last Summer." The script was gorgeous, as was Jared's performance of Sam at his absolute lowest point. You gave him some outstanding material to work with. Out of all your scripts, that so far is my favorite. Having said that, did the ridiculous fan debate about Sam being a rapist prompt you to give Ruby an empty shell to inhabit (great line, by the way, "Al Gore would be proud") or was that the plan all along?
Gamble: We started work on the episode before any debate began that I know of, so none of it was a reaction. But we did know that Sam having sex with a demon would be provocative. Actually, I was very excited to work on the episode. People do a lot of otherwise unthinkable things when they're grieving. Who doesn't want to write the episode where a character they've worked on for 70 episodes does stuff he'd otherwise never do?
But anyway, the state of Ruby's body was the subject of much conversation, mostly because I couldn't shut up about it. I just couldn't get past the rape thing. I think I actually disappointed some people I work with, who thought I'd be tougher or darker or something. Or possibly just didn't care as much as I did one way or another. But I took a lot of writers' room time talking about it. And ultimately took the long way around so I could get her into a vaguely more morally acceptable body. I readily admit it's rather silly, and the mechanics are contrived -- that's why I leaned into the joke so much.
Did you write Sam and Ruby's sex scene to be like Monster's Ball, or did that come from the direction? I loved it by the way and it so fit with how broken their characters are.
Gamble: I referenced Monster's Ball right in the script. We were asking ourselves, "Where's the lowest place Sam can go in a state of despair?" That's why calling it a love scene strikes me as hilarious. It's kind of like self-mutilating and calling it getting dressed for the prom.
I think I like shipping friends for similar reasons to why I like shipping incest LOL! I canāt explain itā¦
Me, too. I still ship friends sometimes, but especially I did before I realized that incest was like friends but more.
There's a lot in common because they can be so close without necessarily seeing what their feelings might actually be, and there's that same inconvenience - what if this screws everything up and I lose a friend(/sibling), etc.
