Body image
Body image is something that is of great importance in our society. Men and woman put a lot of focus on the way they look and how others perceive them. This is enhanced with the extensive media coverage on celebrity bodies and who is fat and who is âToo skinny this monthâ being smeared on the cover of every magazine and in the news. Growing up in our society today must be damn hard for both genders. As they are constantly reminded of how they should look, the kind of clothes that they need to be wearing, and of course to look fabulous in those clothes you need that perfect body. Which is not only unrealistic but beyond damaging to ones self esteem and general well being. Â If that was not enough we have different groups who are body shaming, to be more specific they are fat shaming and skinny shaming and neither are good. To be over weight is dangerous as you can get diabetes, heart disease and numerous other health problems. But to be underweight you can catch infections a lot quicker as the bodies immune system is weak, and fertility issues can arise. A statistics which in all honesty scared the hell out of me is that four out of every five 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat. Does that not sounds insane to anyone else!? 10 year olds are concerned about body image! When I was 10 I did not worry about how I looked, I honestly do not think I had any worries when I was that age. I was happy, I was really happy with myself, and my life. I do not want kids growing up in our society being concerned and anxious about things that they really shouldn't be worrying about at their age. Being a kid is magical, you see the world differently. You donât think that people are cruel, you donât have a care in the world. You are free, you can do what you want and be what you wish. I donât have any kids and I personally do not want any and I can say honestly that part of the reason is because I would be afraid that my kid would not get the chance to be a kid, that they would not have the same wonderful childhood that I did.Â
If we as a society as a group that wants a better future does not do anything I really would not want to hear the statistics in 10 years time.Â
So what can we do to change this?Â
We can spread awareness. We can teach our kids, our nieces, nephews, kids you are babysitting to be a kid. To not try and reach for standards that are not real. To not shame others who are different but to embrace them and their differences. To be healthy!
The media has a huge impact on what people hear and see and they can help out by publishing and reporting on news that is not demeaning or belittling. News that does not have titles such as â Weight gain disasterâ so that more people will buy it. Have some dignity and report proper things, real news!Â
Famous people can help too they can teach the world that they are happy being them and they are strong. Celebrities have such a huge gift and that gift is their voice. People listen to them, people are influenced by the words they speak. So if they speak words of positivity and not negativity or body shaming others then maybe in 10 years time the statistics will be ones that we can be proud of not ashamed of.Â
If you need any support or need someone to just talk to please visit 7cups http://www.7cups.com/1221780 and connect with a friendly and caring listener :)Â
