A professional musician offering drum lessons, gigs, repairs and other services in the Brooklyn, New York area. Originally born in Dallas, Texas, I began studying music at an early age. After attending the University of North Texas pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies I relocated to Brooklyn, New York to further pursue my musical and teaching career. I play regularly in the New York area and enjoy teaching dedicated students from all ages and levels. I was fortunate enough to have studied extensively with Ed Soph, Ari Hoenig, Dan Weiss, Ganesh Kumar, and Miles Okazaki. I am fluent in all musical styles, especially: Jazz, Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, Electronic music, Drum n Bass, Salsa and other Afro-Cuban styles, Brazilian (Samba/Bossa Nova as well as north eastern folkloric), and South Indian. QUESTION!

So I'm in for the night and purposely not practicing drums because my neck/shoulder have really been bothering me. HOWEVER, i've got the transcribing itch. You guys wanna recommend some older swinging bebop drum solos for me to transcribe/memorize? Max, Philly, Kenny Clarke etc.... taking suggestions....

Drummers: This is why it is SO unbelievably important to check out the masters that have come before you.

This solo is a perfect example of a drummer having checked out a lot of masters prior, taken their vocabulary, analyzed/practiced it, and made it his own.

The influence in this solo from masters like Philly Joe, Max Roach, Papa Jo, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams is unquestionable.

As my teacher used to say... "Nothin' new under the sun... just new ways of rediscovering old things."

I think a little Dannie Richmond is in store for today.  Dannie's solo at the end of this tune is a perfect example of development, orchestration, form, and improvisation.  Also his time keeping throughout the entire tune is absolutely perfect.

Thank you! I studied with Ed for around 5 years. He is amazing drummer, teacher, and person. He taught me how to teach myself and how to really listen to music.

Hey, how's it going? Surely, you must know the drummer of the band 'Police'? I don't quite remember his name but I discovered him from Chris Botti's concert in Boston. I thought he is a great drummer/technichian, do you know any more similar to him?

His name is Stewart Copeland. He's an amazing drummer and also incredibly unique. Off the top of my head I can't really think of too many drummers that really play like him.

How My Heart Sings

As I sit in my Brooklyn apartment at almost 3:00 am waiting for a cab to pick me up to go to the airport in an hour, it occurred to me that I still havn't read Bill Evans' biography. 

I bought the book several years ago but just somehow never managed to get around to it.  Well, that's going to change.  I think I'll be able to finish it by the time I get back no problem.

Ready for a good read, and a lotttttt of sad things.
