3 Factors To Consider When You Compare Health Insurance Plans
Buying a health insurance cover without carefully considering the various options available in the market is a mistake that many make. Compare health insurance plans of different providers and accordingly choose a plan that meets your needs and fits your budget.
Buying a health insurance cover without carefully considering the various options available in the market is a mistake that many make. Prior to purchasing a cover, one needs to go through the policies available in the market, study their benefits, features and rates and then opt for one that is budget friendly and covers all of his/her needs. Often times, however, one selects a plan just on the basis of somebody’ recommendation, without really thinking about whether they will be adequately covered. Policies offered by health insurers vary from each other. Here are three essential factors you need to consider when you compare health insurance plans:
Network hospitals – Check to see the list of network hospitals associated with every insurer. Consider those insurers whose hospitals are in close proximity and who provide good medical facilities. It is advisable to opt for insurers that have a tie up with the maximum number of hospitals as this will give you several options in case of a sudden medical emergency.
Waiting period - It is a period of time you got to wait before the insurance company extends coverage. As you compare health insurance plans, look at the initial waiting period, pre-existing disease waiting period and maternity benefits waiting period. Choose those plans that have shorter waiting periods so that you’ll be covered sooner.
Premium vs. coverage - Cost is most definitely an important factor to be considered when you compare health insurance plans of different providers. However, the mistake that many make is they simply go for the lowest costing plans without actually thinking about the coverage they’re getting. When you look at the cost, factor in how the coverage and other benefits you’re deriving. Choose a plan that is meets your budget, and at the same time, meets all your requirements.
Buy a health policy only after you have carefully considered the above mentioned factors. Never purchase an insurance cover without knowing all the benefits you can get from it. What Not to Consider When You Compare Life Insurance Policies
Much has been said about the things to consider when you compare life insurance policies, however, this article focuses on what not to consider when you do the same.
It is extremely important to compare life insurance policies before you settle with one. The activity will ensure that you have not left out a plan that could have best met your needs. Now, since much has been written already about what all to consider while comparing a life insurance plan, this article will focus on what not to consider while you make such comparison. Find the list below:
1. What if the insurance company is winding up its business?
This cannot happen because the insurance company has to follow a certain regulation imposed by IRDAI in order to continue its business and sell policies. In case the owner has gone bankrupt or something then another company will take over the business of that company and everything else will remain the same i.e. the existing policyholders will continue to have similar terms, conditions, benefits, etc. that s/he had with the former owner of that company.
2. Will the lower claim settlement ratio of the insurance company affect my policy in the long run?
To put it straight, claim settlement ratio is determined by dividing the number of claims settled with the number of claims received.
Calculation: Claim Settlement Ratio = No. of claims settled/No. of claims received
Let’s take a scenario – Company XYZ received 100 claims in the year 2017. Out of these 100 claims, 50 of them are not eligible owing to some default from policyholder’s end. So, when we calculate, the claim settlement ratio of XYZ will be 50% if the remaining 50 claims were settled. In this situation, the lower claim settlement of the company does not affect your one to one contract with the company. If you have paid attention to details and have abide by all terms and conditions then your claim will be settled.
3. Should I buy from a public or a private insurer?
All the insurance companies whether public or private are governed by one insurance regulator and that is IRDAI. All insurers must abide by the rules and regulations of IRDAI so it really doesn’t matter whether you buy it from a public or private insurer. When you compare life insurance policies, all you need to focus on is the plan. Check if the plan meets your requirements, whether the cover amount is adequate, whether you can afford the premium amount that it has, what additional features and add-ons does it have and that’s it.
These are the things on the basis of which, in our suggestion, you should never choose a plan. Always look for the contents of the plan, its benefits and features. That’s all you need to focus on when you compare life insurance policies of different insurers.

The joy of welcoming a new bundle of joy into our homes cannot be put into words. We want our children to achieve all their ambitions and we work tirelessly to help them reach every life goal. A major part of our lives is now dedicated to ensuring that our finances are in order, so that we will be able to meet the future expenses of our child, like education, marriage, etc. To help meet such expenses i.e. those relating to a growing child, insurance companies have designed children future plans. What is a child future plan?
Child future plans are insurance cum investment plans that i) secures your kid’s future by helping meet his/her financial requirements at different turning points and ii) protects the financial future of your kid in the event of your demise. Children future plans can be tailor-made to cater to the future financial needs of your kids. They can be availed in the form of unit linked plans and traditional plans. You would be required to invest a sum regularly in the plan which accumulates into a corpus that in turn will secure your kid’s financial future.
To understand how such plans work, consider this example - an individual with a 5 year old child buys a child plan of 20 years that promises a money back at the 15th, 18th and 20th year. So, when the child reaches 20 years, 23 years and 25 years, the insurance company will pay out the agreed upon amount. In case of the demise of the parent during the policy period, the insurer will pay the future premiums and money-backs will be paid on the due dates.
Children future plans offered by insurance companies vary from each other, and are not limited to education plans alone. Say, if you want to plan for your son's or daughter's marriage, you can go for a plan that pays out a lumpsum on maturity rather than regular pay-outs. You can also look for plans that will help build seed capital for your child's future business requirements. Thus, you need to carefully evaluate all your options and accordingly select one that will secure your child's future.

Term insurance is a kind of life insurance product that enables you to financially secure your loved ones for relatively low premium rates. Depending on the kind of plan you choose, you can pay premiums regularly or at one go. Term plans can be availed for a specific period of time, like 10 or 20 or 30 years. Now although term plans don’t generally pay out any benefits when the policyholder survives the policy tenure, but lately insurance companies have begun offering term plans with return on premiums, where the total of all premiums is paid back when the policy matures.
There are several benefits to having a term plan. In this article, we will look at some of the benefits of such plans and why you should seriously consider getting one.
Low premium rates - One of the biggest plus points of a term plan is that they are affordable. The premium rates for such plans are much lower when compared to endowment plans. If you decide to get a term plan, keep in mind that the younger you, the lower your premium rates will be. A25-year-old non-smoker could get a Rs. 1 croreterm cover for just aboutRs. 500 or so per month. The same amount of term cover could cost Rs. 1,500 per month for an individual in his/her 40s.
Tax benefits - Tax deductions can be claimed under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act on premiums paid towards life insurance policy. You can claim a deduction of up to Rs. 1,50,000 under this section. Additionally, the proceeds from the policy is exempt from tax under section 10(10D).
Rider benefits - You can choose from an array of riders to add to your term plan. Critical illness rider, permanent or partial disability rider and accidental death rider, among others, are some of the available options. You will have to pay a little extra to avail these riders. When you look to buy life insurance term plan, make sure to take into account the various rider options.
As you can see above, there are several benefits to opting for a term plan. If you are seeking out life plans that have high coverage at low premium rates, term insurance is just for you. When you look to buy life insurance term plan, shortlist those whose sum assured levels are 8 to 10 times your annual income. In this way, your family will be financially secured in the event you are no more.

Premium is one of the main factors people look at before buying a life insurance cover. A lot of times, people opt out of taking life insurance policies because they are unable to afford the premium cost. Insurance companies take into account different factors while determining the premium. If cost is what’s keeping you from buying a policy, here are a few things you can do to save on the premium:
Ø Buy Insurance Plan Early
Your age plays a big role in determining how much you pay as your premium. When you buy a life insurance policy at an early age, your mortality risk is low and so insurance companies will charge you lower premiums. The longer you wait, the higher your premiums get.
Ø Quit Smoking
Smokers pay more for life insurance plans than non-smokers. To save on premiums, it is recommended that you quit smoking. If you give up this habit for about a year or so, insurance companies will bring down your premium to the same rate as that of a non-smoker. Make sure to let your insurer know about it.
Ø Compare Life Insurance Plans
Compare life insurance plans of different insurance providers and select one that fits your budget. The cost structure and features of insurance policies vary from one insurer to another. So not only are you saving a couple of bucks when you compare life insurance policies, you make an informed decision regarding the policy you buy.
Ø Get Healthy
People who keep themselves healthy can benefit from low premiums. If you take good care of your health, you are less likely to fall sick, and so insurance companies will charge you lesser premiums. On the other hand, if you fail to take care of your health, you put yourself at increased risk of falling sick, leading insurance companies to increase premium rates.
Ø Opt For Term Policy
Term insurance policies are relatively cheaper compared to whole life policies. If you feel like you are unable to afford premiums on whole life cover, consider going for a term insurance plan. However, keep in mind that the features of both the plans are different. Hence calculate all the risks you are taking on and the benefits you derive before taking a term plan.
To save on life insurance premium rates, keep the above mentioned points in mind. Never opt for a policy solely on the basis of its premium. You may end up losing out on several benefits if your selection criterion is the price factor alone. Find a policy that is pocket friendly and meets all your requirements.
