Brotzly Prompt #99
Dirk: So I have good news and bad news.
Todd: Bad news?
Dirk: Someone got hurt.
Todd: ...And the good news?
Dirk: It's no-one we know!
Todd: ...
Dirk: I think.
Hi, I'm looking to write my first brotzy fic but am overwhelmed and don't know what to write about. I was wondering if you could give me a prompt, just a previous one is fine.
Nice to meet you! I don't know when you asked this, considering the unexpected hiatus I've been on recently, so apologies if this a bit of a late reply! I'd be honoured to give you a prompt!Hmmm, what about a situation where Todd has to pose as an artist for a case, and as it turns out, Dirk is a pretty good artist (you can decide where he got his skills from)! The disguise will only be believable if Todd is the artist, so Dirk has to somehow teach Todd.Cue getting paint everywhere, awkwardly close positions as Dirk teaches Todd various techniques, and even more awkward realisations of feelings.I hope that's an okay prompt? If that still seems overwhelming or uninspiring, you could maybe go for Brotzly Prompt #87? It's a little more open ended...Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!!
Brotzly Prompt #98
Imagine Dirk utilising his height to help Todd out. For example, by:
Getting things from the top shelves for him
Being a lookout and peeking over walls for him
Giving him piggybacks
Giving him boosts when they need to get over a barrier
Holding onto him when he can’t reach the handholds at the top of the bus and there’s no space to sit
Pulling Todd onto his lap when they’re sitting together
(Okay, so maybe the last one isn’t really that helpful, but Dirk has discovered that he actually likes being close to Todd...all the time.)
Brotzly Prompt #97
Todd: Dirk, you really shouldn't be up this late.
Dirk: Time? I laugh at the concept.
Brotzly Prompt #96
Imagine Dirk and Todd having a young and very colourblind client who they sit with sometimes in between investigating and describe the colours to, Dirk often talking about his jackets and comparing them to his moods. Todd compares the colours to people, and once is heard saying about the colour yellow:
“Dirk is the colour yellow. He’s like the sunshine.”
One day, the client asks Dirk what colour he thinks Todd is. Dirk simply says:
“The rainbow.”
i think the reason dirk gently resonated so deeply with so many people was that (at least in my case) it answered a need for reassurance. These days, i feel like modern shows think that in order to be taken seriously, they’ve got to have grit and gravelly, stubbly men with colour palettes that look like they’ve been dumped in mud. Which can be extremely captivating when it’s done right - I’m not trash talking the grit, guys. But Dirk Gently shows you can reach people without that. It came to me during a hard time and I could only describe it as a comfort because it told a story that said no matter what happens, you can get yourself through to the end. And maybe things might change and maybe you’ll lose some people along the way but you have a place in the universe and nothing can change that. You’ll make mistakes along the way and nobody will be able to keep you from owning up to that eventually, but people can grow and love.
It’s welcoming in every possible way. Stylistically, it’s charming. Tired of the stubborn, aging homicide detective who’s battleworn and haunted by shadows of his past? Here, have the same angstabilities but wrapped up in a tall, nervous but lovable british guy who wears brightly-coloured jackets that not-so-subtly make up the pride flag. Swap out rainy gutters and black swamps for magical lands, a prince with candy-coloured hair and a homicidal dirt muppet with an inexplicably endearing personality. Story-wise, it’s meticulously detailed. Remember in season 1, where Dirk is driving his stolen car and explaining his holistic thing to Todd and almost runs over Gordon Rimmer who’s holding a bunch of missing dog flyers? And the messages it sends are all so perfect. You’ll find your place in the world so long as you keep fighting. Are you a drug abuser? You can still get yourself on the right track. Riddled by anxiety that threatens your future dreams? You’ll find your crowd and the anxiety won’t hinder any chance of you getting recognised as a universal badass.
Dirk Gently is the first show I’ve loved to this extent and it’s because it’s what I needed and what I still need. It’s a hug with friends and t’s helping a mentally ill girl become a punk witchakookoo and it’s telling the people you love that you love them and it’s saving people. and I love it a lot.
An important message <3 <3 <3
Brotzly Prompt #95
Imagine Todd taking Dirk to a pride parade for the first time in his life.
they,,,heard you were sad,,,,
Brotzly Prompt #94
“But wouldn’t you rather paint your nails yellow?”
“Nope. Black.”
“...Well, okay.”
Brotzly Prompt #93
Imagine Dirk becomes really stressed and hung up over cases, so Todd and the others arrange for Todd and Dirk to go to a music festival for a week or so over summer so that Dirk can relax. Todd trusts the others to sort out the arrangements.
Big mistake.
They arrive at the festival only to discover that it’s a couples special type thing where you must be a part of a couple to stay. Todd doesn’t want Dirk to have to go home still stressed, so they agree to play the part of a gay couple in order to enjoy some music, and chill out for a week.
And then they get the schedule: Spin the Bottle, Seven Minutes in Heaven, slow dancing, couples board games...the list goes on, but they can’t come clean now, can they?
How are they going to make it through the week as a fake couple?
A Friendly Reminder
Take care of your body: take plenty of breaks between work periods, and make sure to do hand and arm stretches before and after long periods of writing/drawing! Speaking as a person who’s been knackering their body for years and really put their hands through the wringer on last year’s Bang, you do not want to fall into neglect! Stay hydrated, get up and walk around, keep your body healthy and your mind clear and sharp!

Big Bang Check-In (feat. How To Write A Summary)
Hi, Bangers!
So, as you (hopefully) know, the first Big Bang check-in is coming up soon- in just over a week’s time, in fact, on May 13th! For this, we need you to email us to confirm your participation, and include in this email:
A current word count (hopefully you’re at least 5k words in by now!)
A WIP
A summary of your story, including pairings, rating and triggers
Now, that last part is pretty important, because this is the summary that will be viewed by artists looking to claim a fic for the challenge! Basically, it’s your elevator pitch, so you wanna give people a good idea of what your fic’s about, and make it appealing- but also give them fair warning of what it entails, we don’t want anyone being caught off guard!
As an example, here’s the summary I wrote for my Big Bang fic last year:
This is today, folks! Let me know if you’re still taking part! -Mod Hellz
Remember to check in!

Brotzly Prompt #92
Todd: Dirk, it's not 'zedd', it's 'zee'.
Dirk: I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm right.
Todd: No you're not!
Farah: You're both pretty, boys. Now can we get back to the case?
Brotzly Prompt #91
Imagine Dirk downloading Candy Crush Saga on his phone, then getting addicted to the game. When Todd finds out about this new obsession of Dirk’s, he just rolls his eyes and says,
“Dirk, Candy Crush is for lonely people.”
To which Dirk replies:
“Well, I’m not dating anyone, am I?”
Commence Todd’s operation to find Dirk a boyfriend (if he knows Dirk’s gay, otherwise there’s that whole thing about setting up with girls, to which Dirk just makes a very confuse expression and goes, “but Todd...I’m gay.”) in order to stop him from playing that damn game because Dirk doesn’t focus and they’ve almost died three, no four times because of this distraction.
ok but imagine Dirk asking Todd if he likes him and Todd says “yeah actually I’ve loved you for a while” and Dirk replies “ok I meant am I tolerable but sure I love you too”
Yes! Yes! I will imagine it! Having imagined this, I love it!
(Also, can you imagine Amanda in the background just fist pumping and yelling ‘Finally!’?)
