Iconic Case Study 1: Snickers Hungry Campaign

Did you know, Betty White wasn't the first choice for Snickers 2010 Superbowl Ad-Campaign? From 2007-2009, Snickers found themselves lagging behind its other global chocolate counterparts. At the time, Snickers was on the verge of losing its position as worlds leading chocolate bar. Fast Forward Fall 2010, when snickers brand agency, BBDO an advertising agency based in Atlanta, GA, actually recommended having the Queen of Soul, R.I.P. Aretha Franklin as the face of their Superbowl campaign. However, Ms. White made the final cut after urging the Snickers brand owner MARS, Inc that their collaboration would launch a comeback for the comedic star, as well as the candy bar. Snickers used star power and light-hearted comedy to revive their brand.

Iconic Moment:

In this commercial, we are set at a local community park. A group of young men enjoying their afternoon engaging in an intense game of football. The camera cuts to a young man preparing to throw a football and Betty White preparing herself for the pass until suddenly she gets harshly tackled down into the mud by another more strapping man. This hilarious scene is an attention grabber the very last thing you expected was to see poor ole Betty get roughly thrown into the mud.

Identifying the problem:

The following scene portrays Betty and her football team in a huddle. One man refers to Betty as ‘Mike’ and asks what the deal is. Our football captain moves on to say fiercely “You’re playing like Betty White out there” as an apparent insult to our character Mike. In this scene, it is apparent that something is off with this football game and Betty White is not in the appropriate setting.

Call To Action:

Our commercial comes to an end with a young woman running onto the field yelling “Baby, eat a snickers.” Once the camera cuts back to our player betty has been replaced with a young man wearing similar colors as betty in the previous scene. She goes on saying “You're not you when you're hungry” implying that Hanger or being hungry is what caused our friend Mike to play football like a little old lady. In this campaign, we have an elderly movie and tv actress that transforms back into our average joe who is playing a game of football with his buds. His fierce hunger made him an ineffective team player by slowing him down, snickers solved his problem and got his head back in the game by helping curb his hunger.

Tierra Whack - Whack World Music Review/Critique

“Best believe I’m gon’ sell, if I just be myself…”

This is undoubtedly thee most creative and impactful work Tierra Whack has shared with her listeners. If you haven’t dived into previous projects like MUMBO JUMBO and Toe Jam and find yourself unfamiliar with the tonality of what encompasses Whack World, I implore you to take time exploring into the mind of this creative artist.

The newly released Whack World serves as a compendium, introducing us into the lyrically sound and audibly amusing lane Philly artist Tierra Whack, has paved for herself. Whack World defies all the rules! Within 15 enthralling minutes, Tierra Whack takes us into her world, through loss, love, motivation, and revelation. Whether it’s the smooth intro within Black Nails or the groovy vibe in Hookers, Whack World is the perfect mini-sized macrocosm of music.

Tierra Whack has such a diverse range, she’s perceptive to her sound and fits whatever mood the song calls for. In Pet Cemetery, Whether the lyrics are pinned to an actual dog or not doesn’t matter. I’ve never lost a pet and I missed their ass so much listening to this song! Moreover, I lost my mother and missed her so much vibing to Pet Cemetery. The interpretation you choose over this staccato piano and tangy percussion is up to you, but Tierra Whack masterfully illustrated “All dogs go to heaven…!”

Fruit Salad, Produced by Ric and Thaddeus, has hints of organs paired deliciously with a heaping blend of rhythmic percussion. The motivational song lyrically illustrates Whack’s methods of healthy living after letting go of heavy foods and ill-energy. It’s so interesting to experience the journey that Whack World invites us in as listeners, you can’t help but twist your ear to enjoy the whimsical ride that is Whack World.

EyeBuyDirect thought piece.

As a curly guy with glasses, I’ve noticed that when shopping for glasses, it can be challenging to picture myself in any of the cool specs I might typically see being modeled in a prescription glasses ad campaign. So, when it came to purchasing glasses; it’s habitually been out of necessity, instead of want.

Until I was scrolling through Facebook one day and saw this advertisement:

At an instant, I was obsessed. So obsessed, I didn’t at first realize what was being sold to me. REALLY DOPE GLASSES! Also strange, because the first time I saw this ad I was in desperate need of new glasses? Hmm.

This excellent advertisement engaged me immediately in more than one way. With its striking millennial pink backdrop accompanied by the models big brown doe-like eyes, my attention was immediately captured by this visually alluring piece of marketing material.

At any rate, Eye Buy Direct literally hit the nail on the head with this millennial driven and diverse ad campaign. Eye Buy Direct features a cast of young fresh-faced and smiling 20-somethings living their best lives while rocking fashionable, bold and professional style frames.

Diversity in advertisement has been on a rise, but still pretty scarce and far between. Companies can be segmenting themselves from a whole market just based on who they choose to feature in their advertisements. As a consumer, it is a huge deal when I got the chance to see someone who looked just like me, wearing this brands product. It really sparked the urge for me to want to go check out the company, and find out what they’re about!

I know the next time I’m in the market for some glasses; Eye Buy direct might have earned themselves new customers. Great job @Roy Hessel!

Just call it Dunkin?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or happen to reside in any other part of the world other than New England. You’ve probably already heard the news; Dunkin Donuts has officially dropped the “Donuts” off their name.

A bold yet solid marketing move, don’t you agree? I think this rebranding is going to be a definite shock to the culture. Not every company can survive a re-brand or a name change.

On the other hand, Dunkin’ has been bracing its customers for this change. With their slogan being “America Runs on Dunkin” and making other small and subtle changes through the last couple years. Just last year, Dunkin significantly reduced the size of their menu.

In the age of minimalism and customers being attracted to a more simplified and streamlined process from higher-end purchases all the way down to your morning cup of coffee, I believe Dunkin’ has made a bold move to push other companies and marketing initiatives forward. I can't wait to see how Dunkin’ continues to rebrand itself and its marketing campaigns to fit around its new name.
