Maggie Rogers - Fallingwater Review/Critique
Folk/Pop artist Maggie Rogers briefly expressed via Instagram, ‘Fallingwater’ is about a release and rapid change. ‘Fallingwater’s’ intro alone instantly immerses in a rhythmic pop groove, audibly submerging listeners into an intimate space. Complimented seamlessly by a melodic piano, the song beings to shape itself. Illustrating this story of finding yourself in a space, that you’ve created. Understanding the role you’ve played in placing yourself in a strained, dark space trying to find an escape of light or relief.

Written by Rostam Batmanglij and Rogers herself, the chorus perfectly expresses this space and as the song progresses, we begin to cascade our feelings outward. I would even argue the song encapsulates listeners in a stillness, without preservation, where faint sharp violins and an echoing, rhythmic percussion shift us forward. With pungent lyrics like “Oh, it’s getting louder”, the song crescendos from feelings of weariness to rebelled revelation. We begin to feel liberated in truth, yes this is where we’ve been, but it’s not where we’ll stay.
The visual for ‘Fallingwater’ provides rich context, illustrating Rogers in red satin during the first verse, then she’s drenched in blue after the water has fallen.
One of the most beautiful aspects of music is the story it could illustrate. The colors that can be painted within the brush strokes of medley and lyricism. If you’re unfamiliar with the Folk/Pop artist Maggie Rogers and haven’t heard singles like Blood Ballet and Alaska, I’d recommend taking time to explore her artistry, muse what emotions her music evokes within you. MR1, her debut album, has yet to have a confirmed release date, but I’m anticipating the release and can’t wait to embrace the project in its totality.
