summary: the winter soldier is a ghost. that much is true. despite several confirmed eliminations of the soldier by international security organizations and various governments, the myth keeps reappearing despite bodily evidence to the contrary. this is the way it has been for decades.

In another world.
âBeta-39, do you see them?â
Beta-39 wraps the fingers of his incomplete hand around the manâs leather harness and curls his toes, bare of socks or shoes. He nods his head, then tucks his face away into the warmth of the skin he can feel through the kevlar and canvas.
âThey wonât hurt you,â the man says, his voice a reverberating susurration somewhat like the static hum that had come from Beta-23âs chest, before Beta-23 had been decommissioned. Beta-39 hopes that he wonât be decommissioned now, since his left arm lacks the biosynthetic sheathing of his right. It makes him lopsided, imperfect, disposable; he steals an anxious peek at the warm man who holds him so carefully. The man catches him looking and readjusts his grip, laughing gently. âCan you say it? Crows.â
Crows. Theyâre pecking at the scraps of burned flesh here and there, scattered upon the ground. The sight and smell doesnât bother Beta-39, but it doesnât seem to bother the man, either. The man isnât upset. Thatâs good. âCrows,â Beta-39 repeats, obediently. âCrows.â He says it again, because he can. The man is still not upset. Thatâs even better.
âGod, you sound just like he did when he was your ageââ The man shakes. He shakes so badly that Beta-39 tightens his grip on the straps, lest he fall. âSorry, sorry. BetaâI need to call you something other than a letter and a number. Do you have a name?â
The man doesnât sound strong anymore. He sounds all brittle. Beta-39 wonders if itâs because of Alpha. The man had found Beta-39 in Beta-39âs little white room. He had stopped Beta-39 from being decommissioned by his favorite guard. He had been too late to stop the decommissioning of Beta-38 or Beta-37, but he cradled Beta-51 in his arms in a way that Beta-39 had only ever seen with the researchers who were handling pieces of Alpha.
Beta-51 always, always cried, but in the manâs arms, Beta-51 was silent. The man had grabbed Beta-39 by the waist, and lifted him up, told him to hang on, hang on to him and Beta-51âthey ran past the rooms holding the Betas that had already been disposed of, but the man stumbled once they reached Beta-20. The man reached out and touched Beta-20âs face, closed Beta-20âs cold, clouded eyes. The man hadnât done that for any of the other Betas, but maybe it was because the man and Beta-20 looked to be about the same age.
They had run some more, but then Beta-13 had stepped out from behind a doorway. Beta-13 fired his gun, missing the manâs head but blowing out Beta-51âs. The man had released a terrible cry, something that could have been no, please, please, no, no, noâit was then that Beta-39 had become afraid. Beta-51âs body was left to the floor, and Beta-39 closed his eyes.
There was a crackling voice from the manâs cowl with a code of some kind; Beta-13âs cardiac motor burst. Beta-13 collapsed to the floor, and the man carried Beta-39 past him and into the next room.
Beta-39 didnât want to see anymore. He didnât want to see the high Betas reach critical. They were old, imprecise. The doctors had said that they had their parts replaced, not grown.
The man hadnât put him down, not until they had reached the laboratory that held the remains of Alpha.
Beta-39 isnât sure what he remembers more clearly; seeing Alphaâs archaic arm disassembled and suspended in the display upon the wall together with the cryogenic containment capsules for each limb and organ, or hearing the man wail where he stood on the white tile. Beta-39 had never seen Alphaâs face before. It looked sad, even disembodied in ice. Beta-39 wasnât sure if he was supposed to be in the presence of Alpha, who was Very Important, but he was the last Beta; Beta-39 supposed that made things acceptable.
The crackle in the manâs cowl sounded urgent, and the man wept for a moment longer before he clutched Beta-39 to his chest with both armsâhe ran out with fire chasing behind them, and here they are.
The outside is nice, Beta-39 thinks, even if his exposed skin is getting cold. âI donât have a name,â Beta-39 replies.
âEveryone has a name.â The man sounds only a little weak, this time.
Beta-39 reaches up to touch the manâs hair. Lit up by the fire and the sun, itâs bright in his eyes and soft to the touch. He touches the hair with his completed arm because itâs perfect, unlike his incomplete arm. Beta-39 isnât even done with being constructed. He hasnât finished his training. He doesnât know why he merits a nameânames are only given for field missions.
âIâm a Beta. We donât have names.â
The man grunts, and his arms pull Beta-39 snug and tight. Around them, the crows flutter. Beta-39 doesnât know how to describe them, other than, thanâŚpretty. The man is pretty, too. Objectively, the gleam of his incomplete arm is pretty, but he tucks it into the manâs chest between their bodies to hide it from the light. âCan I give you one?â The man whispers. The man turns his face to press his nose to Beta-39âs hair.
Itâs a foreign feeling, being held like this. Itâs warm, which is nice, but the man is so strong that Beta-39 feels safe, too. He feels secure, which is why he concedes with another nod.
âJamesâno. Not that one. Jacob? Joshua? Jonah?â A big whirring comes from above, and Beta-39 flinches at the wind that smacks into his face. âShhh, shhh, itâs ok, donât be afraid.â Beta-39 trusts him. Beta-39 ceases to be afraid, and looks at the machine in the sky. He recognizes it as a helicopter, and when it lands, the man carries him over to it and straps himself in without releasing Beta-39 from his arms.
There are three other people in the helicopter. They are all pretty, and Beta-39 feels so secure that he tells them so. The man will keep him safe. The woman chuckles, but she looks so sad. They all look so sad. They say nothing.
Beta-39 tugs on the manâs sleeve. He wants to hear more names. âDesignation,â he states, and the manâs eyes turn from clouds to stars. The manâs big hands are warm on his back.
When he speaks, itâs so soft that Beta-39 has to press closer to hear. âHow aboutâŚJesse? Jeremiah? Or maybe a different letter altogether, huh? George, Gabriel, Gregory? Ryan? Thomas? William? Elliotââ
Beta-39 stops him before he gets too far and Beta-39 forgets the one he likes best. âJe-re-mi-ah,â Beta-39 tests. He decides that yes, he does like this one after all.Â
The man looks like heâs about to cry. Thatâs fine, Beta-39 has seen him cry already, in the lab that held Alpha. âJeremiah. Jeremy. Jerry.â Beta-39 likes those variations, so he nods to everything. He has a new designation, a new name. It feels, it feelsâhe ignores the blood flaking on the manâs clothes and tries to burrow into the manâs chest because his face is getting too hot.
"Heâs a clingy one, Steve,â another man comments, hesitantly. âWe might need to pick up a stuffed animal to distract him so you canâŚwash off.â
Beta-39-now-Jeremiahâs man, whose name is apparently Steve, trembles. âWeâll get Jeremy a, aâŚâ He flounders; his face splinters into a rictus of choking laughter. âA bear. A Buâa, a Buckââ
Jeremiah doesnât know what to do about the hysterics, and looks to the woman for guidance. She reminds him of Beta-19, who was, oddly, female. âA Jer-Bear,â she offers, and her voice is so tender that Jeremiah blinks in bewilderment. His eyes are getting wet.
Steve laughs. He laughs, and laughs, and his face looks like itâs leaking because heâs crying so hard. âThatâs right,â he wheezes. âA Jer-Bear, for Jeremiah.â
Jeremiah wheezes, too. Steve squeezes him. Jeremiah squeezes back. Jeremiahâs sensors are picking up on his stress and they ping, behind his heart, to stop sobbing. Jeremiah doesnât stop, because everyone at the panels which would display the error is dead. He feels like a toy in Steveâs arms, and they rock back and forth in the helicopter as it lifts higher into the sky. Jeremiah feels very small, and very safe, and very sad, because Steve is very sad. However, Jeremiah is warm. That makes up for the sadness.
Distantly, Jeremiah wonders if Alpha is warm, too. His parts were always kept frozen, and Jeremiah and Steve had left them behind in the fire. Jeremiah wonders if the parts had burned, or if they had melted away into vapor like the ice in which they were encased. Either way, Alpha had been dead for a long, long time. The dead only ever get colder.
In another world.
You have no idea how in love with this I am. Even though Bucky wasnât that young as Steveâs sidekick, it is still SO BEAUTIFUL. i am really done with this one. i donât even have the ability to caps it. iâm that level of done.
No, really. Itâs like I never knew I wanted Kid Loki till I got him. I never knew I needed Kid Winter Soldier till now.
Reblogging again because this pic is on my mind all the time and I keep thinking about what if there had been a Winter Soldier Program just like the Black Widow program and they train all these kids to be assassins and then Cap and crew come in and rescues these kids and this is Steve with the little top Winter Soldier in training. Someone write this fic so I am not forced to make feeble attempts at it?
âDo you, little jotun?â she asks, âDo you know how love feels?â
âI⌠I do. I think I do,â he answers. âItâs when⌠itâs when you feel safe. And happy⌠Itâs when your brothers donât chase you into the meadows. Or when father does not say words that make you want to cry.â A small smile forms, his eyes grow soft. âItâs⌠Itâs when Thor comes to find you. And hold you. And tell you that⌠that everything will be well.â
I think I love tumblr the most bc I don't owe anyone anything. I can come on here and reblog the most unhinged ridiculous shit and then leave. I'm not giving any explanation.
In light of this sad post, I just want to FYI anyone that might be anxious about it:
I will never delete any of my fics for any reason.
1 - I take the Archive part of AO3 very seriously. Iâll edit and update, but not delete because in my mind itâs been archived once itâs posted.
2 - Iâve seen too many fics/authors I loved disappear, never to be seen again. If I posted it, then someone who loved it might have found it and someday get the intense urge to read again like I do for those fics, and I want them to be able to find it.
3 - What better way to get back at someone heckling you than to just stone-cold ignore their mean-spirited demands? To leave a fic up that infuriates the person bothering me so much for existing on AO3 at all? Even if it was really bad, I would just walk away. Make it written by Anonymous. Abandon it on the site. Comments can be turned off. Notifications can be turned off. An entirely new account can be made to start over with.Â
The fic can be orphaned. Â
For any author who is being bothered into deleting their fics/account, please at least consider orphaning your work instead of deleting it wholesale. Orphaning is a wonderful, innovative feature of AO3 put there specifically to thread the needle for people in exactly your situation. To bridge the gap of those who no longer want to be associated with a fic, and those who loved what you wrote and want to be able to revisit it.
An Untamed fic I really loved got the author a lot of harassment and they contemplated deleting it while they were still posting chapters because of the awful comments a handful of people were leaving with each update, but instead orphaned it after finishing. I have reread that fic at least five times since then. I donât remember the authorâs name anymore, just as they certainly wanted, but I still enjoy that fic and I know Iâll come back to it again and Iâm so grateful that I can.
No amount of hate erases how much someone else genuinely loved what you wrote.Â
And there is ALWAYS someone to love it. Even if itâs just one person. Even when things are hard and the horrible people are very loud, try not to forget that they are there too.
Donât make the hateful one the most important one.
The fic can be orphaned.
This is so important, and I wish more authors used this option. (Thank you, @mondengel, for your reassurance!)
I honestly understand wanting to withdraw your fic: from harassment or just the vague embarrassment that something you wrote 5 years ago doesnât really reflect you as a person or a writer anymore.
But. ⌠there is ALWAYS someone to love it. Unless you are withdrawing the work to publish it as an original piece, I will always encourage an author to simply orphan the work. Your name vanishes. You get no comments/notifications. It is entirely separated from you. And then⌠the fandom community remains enriched with something many of them love.
I truly understand the urge to strike back, especially if youâve been hurt or harassed. And the only weapon an author has is taking their piece away from the fandom. But. That hurts so many innocents, too.
In this fandom, we have many AO3 fics hidden behind collection/mystery walls, and I live in hope that the author is just taking some time to cool down (and allow the harassers to target someone else) before putting them back up for the rest of us to enjoy.
Be kind to your authors.
And maybe theyâll be kind right back to you!
And if you want to maintain control of the work you can (temporarily or permanently) add it to an anonymous collection (instructions for how to do that here). Your name will be removed from it and it will no longer show up on your author page but you will still receive comment notifications and if you go to your statistics page you will be able to see it. You can still edit the work this way and choose to orphan it later if you so desire.
Another option is to create a second account and shift works you donât want associated with you there and then turn off all notifications from that account (which can be done from the preferences page). You may already have invitations (check the âinvitationsâ tab on your AO3 dashboard) or you can request one to be sent to you here (there is a waiting list, but you should get one within a week). Then once you have a second account set up, go to the preferences pages on both accounts and click the âAllow others to invite me to be a co-creatorâ button. Then edit the work and add in the new account as a co-author, save the change, then edit again and remove your original account author and save it again. Ta-da! Youâre main account is no longer listed as the author to the fic!
Oooh, this is very useful, thank you @batinaburnouse.
This.
I canât say for sure how many times Iâve gone down my bookmarks and hit the advisory âThis work has been deleted.â âŚand just felt my insides seize for the loss of something that had been very much enjoyed.
If youâre having difficulties, please consider orphaning instead of deletion.
So in the past few years Iâve seen so many videos / posts that are like:
âActually wolves donât have hierarchies! They live in family groups where the âalphasâ are mom and dad and the other wolves are their CHILDREN and offer their respect willingly! :Dâ
and I just have to say
how dare you try to make normative nuclear families out of wolves
Yes, a lot of the old ânature red in tooth and clawâ stuff about wolves is nonsense. (Like anything from Jack London.) And anything âalphaâ you see sleazy men trying to relate to dating (yikes!) is especially nonsense.
But wolves are complex social creatures and they create complex social structures. Just as you canât say âTHIS is the way human society is structured. Just THIS single way and no otherâ, so too there is no single form for a wolf pack. Â
Some packs are a mom wolf and a dad wolf and their wolf children. Others are two small ragged packs that combine to form a large pack. Others are packs where a lone wolf joins and eventually becomes a leader. Others are packs where a grown child-wolf has pushed their parent out of the leadership role.
Speaking of the latter, letâs look at the tale of Wolf 40 and Wolf 42.
Wolf 40, Wolf 41, and Wolf 42 were wild Yellowstone wolves, daughters of the alphas. Their father was illegally killed by hunters and shortly after ambitious Wolf 40 ousted her mother, driving her out of the pack. Wolf 21 became the new alpha male, and 40â˛s mate.
Wolves have personalities, and Wolf 40â˛s personality was âvolatileâ. Imagine Scar from The Lion King combined with the boss from Office Space, and you have Wolf 40. She habitually bullied the other female wolves, attacking them until they expressed abject submission. And the wolves that got the worst of it were her sisters, Wolves 41 and 42.
Wolf 41 got tired of the bullying and left. Wolf 42 remained, perhaps because she was close to Wolf 21, the alpha male. Despite that, Wolf 21 did not interfere when his mate harassed Wolf 42.
Unlike 40, Wolf 42 got along well with the other female wolves, spending time grooming them and relaxing with them. Wolf 40 could have followed her sisterâs example and built up positive social bonds. But she didnât.
One day, Wolf 40 went out on an important task. Â She was going to kill another litter of her sisterâs pupsâhaving done the same in two previous years. Â This isnât uncommon wolf behavior (but is not universal, as we will see.) Â Typically only the alphas breed.
However, Wolf 40 never returned from her important task because Wolf 42âwho previously had submitted to her alpha and sister, who had allowed the killing of two previous litters of pupsâhad had enough. Â She fought back.
And the other female wolves jumped to aid her.
Collectively, they killed Wolf 40. Because âalphaâ isnât a magic cloak of protection, it doesnât even mean âstrongest wolfâ, itâs just a job title.
The next day Wolf 42 carried her pups, one by one, to her sisterâs den. She set her children among the pups of her dead sister and raised both litters together. And when another wolf in the pack had pups, Wolf 42 carried them to the den to be communally raised as well. She was the alpha female now and she made the rules, and the first rule was âwe donât hurt pups here.â
As for Wolf 21, he became the mate of Wolf 42. Maybe he understood that Wolf 40 had been riding for a fall.Â
As alpha female, Wolf 42 continued to be supportive and kind towards the other pack members. Wolves who had been nervous wrecks under Wolf 40 began to relax and come into their own; one of the former omega wolves gained self-confidence and became one of the best hunters.
âAlphaâ, for wolves, just means leader. They might be good leaders, whom you respect, or they might be bad leaders, who fill you with dread. They might be your parents, or they might not. Even if they are your mother or father, wolves donât contextualize those relationships the same way humans do.
But one thing wolves have in common with humans is that they have individual personalities and experiences, and their actions derive from those. There is no âtypical wolf pack.â And I think thatâs beautiful.
If you want to learn more about wild wolf dynamics, I recommend reading the annual Yellowstone Wolf Project Reports. Which are FASCINATING. There are also some good wildlife specials out there.
Wolves are my favorite animal. <3 It pains me to see them misunderstood as crazed bloodthirsty brutes, but it also pains me to see them woobified. They deserve better than that.
Let me think about a Loki who comes back from the snap and doesnât make fun of Thorâs weight gain, whoâs heartbroken at the sight of his golden brother with his spark gone.Â
Gone the shine in his blue eye that made it sparkle like a jewel, his once lustrous hair now dry and bridle, his beard overgrown and unkept- for once Thor doesnât need to tell Loki he mourned.
And a Thor who is so happy he weeps at having his brother back but who is so ashamed of how he looks now, of how far he fell- how broken he feels.Â
But Loki doesnât care how Thor looks, if he has two eyes or one, the length of his hair, a beer gut over what once was solid muscle- pain, that Loki can understand. He knows it like an old friend but Thor, the shinning sun to his moonâŚLoki never wanted him to know pain like this.
What do us humans know about what it takes to break a god?Â
Is it fast and swift? Slow and overtime?Â
Does it happen when they lose everyone they love? Or just when they lose the one they love the most?
After the tears are over, he bathes Thor, he trims his beard, he washes and braids his hair- he caresses, and he kisses, and he whispers words of praise and love and loyalty to his King- no, to his brother.
And for the first time in centuries not one lie slips past his lips.
What do us humans know about what it takes to break a god?
What do we know about putting one back together?
Is it like a living jigsaw puzzle with edges that cut and cracks that bleed?Â
Do you heal it with prayers and worship?Â
Loki dares anyone, friend or foe, human or Asgardian to make jest or comment about Thorâs weight- they donât know the extend of his rage.Â
More terrifying they donât know the extend of his love.
Piece by piece he goes putting his brother back together, lovingly tending wounds and with every broken piece he fixes he finds one of his own.Â
Slowly, they heal each other.Â
Some days are easy, they shine so bright and warm they burn. Some are treacherous, clouds gather overhead and thunder and lighting shake the ground- the people worry about a flood. Loki worries about his brother.
What do us humans know about what it takes to break a god?
What do we know about putting one back together?Â
Making him stronger, more beautiful, stars in his eye, and lightning in his veins.
Who fixes the gods when they are broken?Â
(They fix each other.)
