Energy Work 101: Basic Shielding
"Shielding" is an energy work technique that puts a protective sphere of energy around you. This technique is basic at its core, but can be continually evolved and upgraded to become very advanced and powerful indeed.
Concepts & Theory
Most all shields are spherical or egg-shaped.
Shields are often sized to be an outstretched arm's length away from your body, plus a foot (30cm) or so extra all around. You can make them any size you like. Because they are made of energy, the bigger they are, the more energy they take.
Shields fade away. Depending on how stable they are when you make them, they may fade within hours or days.
Shields can and will affect your mood and how people perceive you.
It is a good idea to practice dismantling/undoing shields as often as you practice creating them.
While the most basic shield is a bubble of white light, they can be endlessly modified.
You can have more than one shield at once. They can be stacked concentrically. Think about which shields you want to be closer to you and which you want on the outside next to others.
One of the most useful ways to modify a shield is to specifically choose what kinds of energies you want to bet let in, and what kinds you want to keep out.
The basic technique used for energy shielding can also be used for other techniques such as glamours, energy cleansing, object charging, and some forms self-care. Because of this, shielding is a good place to start practicing practical energy work.
Shielding is a cousin of aura-imprinting. The technique I am talking about here puts a bubble of energy on the outside of your aura. Aura-imprinting/strengthening techniques refer to changing your aura itself.
Methods of Shield-Raising
There are as many methods to accomplish shielding as there are people. Here are a couple:
1. Make one hand into a fist and place it over your heart. Place your other palm on top of it. Gently push down on your chest to create pressure - not so much that it hurts. Imagine, feel, believe, or know that within your chest is a wellspring of energy. This energy pools around your fist as you create pressure there. When you are ready, move your fist away from your body (experiment with both fast and slow motions). Imagine, feel, believe, or know that an energy sphere grows from that place in your chest and expands until it surrounds you. It stops expanding about a foot away from your outstretched arms.
2. Breathe in. As you breathe in, consider that you are pulling pure energy out of the air and into your body. Hold your breath for a beat and decide that when you exhale, that pure energy is going to start forming a sphere around your body. As you exhale, imagine, feel, believe, intend, or know that this energy flows around you to start forming an energy shell. Continue breathing in and out with intent until you can easily imagine, feel, or believe that the shell has become solid and complete.
3. Consider a pop-culture method that a character uses to shield themselves. Steven Universe can do that rose quartz thing, for example. Or, imagine Captain Picard of Star Trek saying, "shields up!" and the Enterprise being surrounded by powerful protective energy. Copying a pop-culture technique can be extremely effective for shielding. Put your intent towards causing real power to flow, and let culture be your guide.
4. Consider that your body is permanently connected to your environment and there is always free energy exchange passing between you and the world around you. This process is automatic, but like your breath, you have the ability to take control of this process if you so choose. Feel the parts of you making contact with the world below (your feet, or bottoms of your legs if you are sitting). Decide, intend, choose, or will that the energy passing into your body at those points will instead rise up and surround you in a shield. You may need to actively stay with this process and continually will it to occur; with practice you may need to only check in every now and then.
A Method of Shield-Dissolving
1. Consider that you have placed energy around yourself which exists there whether or not you can feel it. Decide, intend, choose, or will that this energy breaks up and dissolves. You get to choose what to do with the energy. Options include:
Drawing it back into yourself
Pushing it down into the earth
Releasing it into the air around you
Would you like to do a fun experiment? Release the energy into the air around you in a closed room with no open doors or windows :)
Consider drawing energy back into yourself until you feel your storage containers are full, then pushing the rest of it downwards and into the earth.
Basic Shield Programming
For practice in raising and putting down energy, the form or shape your shield takes doesn't really matter. If you need to know what form it will take in order to complete the exercise, the most basic shield is considered to be a smooth bubble of white light; you can choose to practice with any form you like.
Programming a shield basically means to choose its effects. Common effects include limiting emotional intake from others, and blocking out environmental energy.
Form should follow function. If you want an energy shield to totally completely block out 100 of environmental energies, its form may take an opaque, solid black orb. If you want the shield to limit some energies but not others, it may take the form of a chain-link fence, be semi-opaque, or be like vines with gaps-inbetween them.
Experimenting with what forms work best for you is worthwhile. You do not necessarily need to choose a specific form: simply putting willpower behind your intent will also suffice.
Two Methods of Programming
I recommend trying the first technique for initially creating the shield, and the second technique for making adjustments once it exists.
1. Choose the intent of your shield before you even begin making it. As you begin gathering power, hold your intent in the forefront of your mind. Understand, believe, or know that the shield will not be created in general, but that it will be created within the specifications of your intent, like pancake batter poured into a cookie cutter mold. Hold your intent at the forefront of your mind while energy is gathered and released into the shield. (This is what you're doing automatically if you choose a pop culture technique with specific shield purpose and form)
2. Create a general/basic shield in any way you prefer. Observe, believe, feel, understand, or know that this basic shield is under your control and will respond to your intent. Select an intent. Pour your intent into the existing shield. This may be done through the vehicle of the breath, hand symbols, eye gazes, chanting, or any desired method. Observe, believe, feel, understand, or know that the shield responds to your will like a pond rippling when a rock is thrown in. Maintain your focus until you sense the work is complete, or until you're tired or bored.
“I would buy a mansion” “I would buy designer” “I’m getting a pool” Don’t give me that lame ass if I won the lottery shit. You’re all pathetic. If I came into a significant amount of money, you know what I’d do? I’d go to the Ren Faire, B-line straight to the cloaks. I’m talking floor length, heavy, wool, felted details, huge hooded cloaks that are like 450 a piece and all handmade and I’d get me one. Maybe even get one of the smaller ones that hangs off the shoulders and lands just above the elbow that are 90 by themselves. And I’d be the baddest bitch around because I’d wear that shit everywhere. It’s 115 degrees? I’m sorry do I look like I give a fuck? I have a cloak bitch I don’t need your fahrenheit bullshit. And you’re a FOOL if you wouldn’t do the same.
Valentine's Day Magick/Love Magick
So I'm feeling a little down and very low energy, and writing and helping brings me joy, so here's some "it's far too overcast and cold for me to be mentally well" witch ideas:
Light incense. Don't visualize or do magic. Light it up and say, "yay, I like incense."
Make tea. Sloosh it around in your mug a little. Say, "it's just like the ocean." Drink the ocean.
If you are a little cold, say, "I manifest warmth." Go find a bigger, cozier sweater or a blankie. Get warm. Your spell has manifested. You are magic.
Find some of your clickity clackity rocks. Make a crystal grid of no more than three rocks. No matter what grid you make, the intent is, "I have just done a productivity." When you are done, your spell has simultaneously been cast and become manifest.
Wash one dish. Look at it and know that it loves you. You and the dish are friends now.
Imagine what kind of cat you would like to have, if you did want a (new) cat. Think about its appearance and personality. Give it a name. It is now your thoughtform. Enjoy.
Watch that one Netflix show you've been saving forever for a time when you're ready to focus. Do or do not focus. When you are done watching the show, say, "I knew it."
An Angst of Athames
I regularly mentor new witchcraft students through a foundational year of finding their tools and learning the basics of ritual. I've noticed that the athame tends to be the tool new witches are most likely to have trouble with. Oh, not all new witches. But if things are going to go awry, it's going to be with the athame.
So what's up with the athame?
I'll start with the term itself. It probably originates from the Latin artavus or small knife which through mis-copying became arthame and which Gardner wrote as athame. So, it's basically a tool with a blade.
It's the air tool. Or the fire tool. Depending on tradition, the wand and the athame can swap places as air and fire tools.
The traditional athame (fire) is a forged blade (made by fire). It is double edged, though often not sharpened. In traditional Wicca, it is used in the Great Rite (in proxy).
The air athame (sword of truth) tends to allow for more diverse materials. It can also be used in the Great Rite.
Actual swords tend to show up in Ceremonial magic where the magician stands in the circle and summons into the triangle. The sword is used to move things around inside the triangle, so the magician needs something long enough to reach into the triangle without stepping into the triangle.
The Great Rite (in proxy). I'm not going to explain this in detail since any good Wicca book should go over it. For this ritual, the athame is plunged into the chalice, which is traditionally filled with wine. (For those curious - I recently completed a Queer Mysteries class where the final assignment was - Queering the Great Rite. That resulted in some fantastic variations.)
Angst point 1 - Some people are troubled working with a weapon, which has led to people finding diverse ways to represent the athame. Which has varying success depending on how you use the athame, but basically, lot's of pointy things can direct energy. So many of us get creative with athame. Crystals athames are popular. I've used feathers (for air). If you can find antique letter openers they work really well and sometimes are crafted to look like swords or daggers while being less deadly.
Angst point 2 - price. This is a basic angst point for any tool but athames have a special place in it. You can grab a nice stick to use as a wand but most of us can't make our own knives since that requires a forge. So if you want a traditional black handled blade, you usually end up at a speciality magic shop. Thrift shops are less likely to offer a really witchy looking athame but often have kitchen knives and occasionally hunting knives that can be adapted if you want a real blade.
Angst point 3 - If you are in a tradition (or taking a class) that uses the Great Rite or a variation of it, you need to plunge that blade into a chalice. This is where the students who bought wonderful selenite athames realize they have a problem completing the assignment. I've seen lots of creative solutions to Angst Point 2 ranging from consecrating a basic kitchen knife and using that in ritual to wrapping a selenite blade in plastic wrap. The latter being done by someone who I know won't being doing the Great Rite in regular ritual.
Angst point 4 - legal issues. In some places it is illegal to sell or mail double edged weapons. Laws may vary depending on your location and often you can get a dagger or sword as long as it is sold unsharpened. This is also were the "letter opener" classification can come in handy.
Below is a collection of athame-like items for inspiration. There are a few bolines included. The boline traditionally being the white handled knife but also traditionally being sharpened and used on physical objects rather than just to direct energy. (That little leaf-shaped knife is sharp)
Witchy self-care
Many of us, witches, lightworkers, spiritual practitioners, etc., are empaths. We are giving without expecting something back. In our mundane life, where we have plenty of responsibilities, we try our best to be there for those we care about the most, make them happy, and often we forget about ourselves.
Why does self-care so important?
Without it, we might feel drained and “out of magik”, after we have spent so much energy on others and didn’t take good care of ourselves to fill our energy reservoir. Without proper self-care, we might feel uninspired and maybe even lazy. Remember, to make someone else happy, you should first make yourself happy; you can’t give from an empty space.
Some ideas for self-care:
Of course, do what works the best for you, but here are some suggestions of self-care activities that work for me, fill me up with inspiration and encourage me to take my power back.
Yoga
Activating my body improves blood flow and energy flow in it. It makes me feel more vital and connected. Of course, any other physical activity will do the same.
Meditation or just relaxation session
You may light candles, burn incense, make the right environment for yourself, and take some time for yourself to heal.
A walk outside, preferably in nature
If you feel disconnected, nature is the answer. Go outside into the loving arms of nature. It truly heals. If you live in a big city, a walk in the local park will do the work also. Notice the nature around you even in the urban environment, the trees, the flowers, the birds, or other local animals.
Self-love bath
Make it as enjoyable as possible. You might use candles, self-love crystals (like pink quartz), rose petals, burn incense, add essential oils to the water (for me it’s Lavender, so magical and healing, and also good for skincare), and any other thing that feels right to you. Let the water wash away your heaviness and empty space for new, good vibes.
Herbal tea with intent
Make yourself a nice cup of tea and fill it with the intent of what exactly you need right now. Drink it mindfully and joyfully.
Journaling
Sometimes, I feel like I don’t know what exactly I need to feel good, so I do journaling. Write down what bothers you and where do you feel a lack. Then write down a positive affirmation for each aspect you have spotted and let the good manifest into your life.
Music
It’s no secret that music is a healer. It may be 432HZ music (healing tone), classical music, or even heavy metal (although it’s considered as “low vibe” music), whatever works for you and makes you feel good and empowered.
Take good care of yourself and blessed be 💜✨
For anyone struggling with body image right now, remember that your body is a vessel to hold your divine energy. It allows you to experience human life on this 3d plane of existence. Once you start realizing that, it starts getting easier to stop caring about society's opinions on what we should look like.

Reading candle flames and soot!
tall/strong flame: lots of energy; barriers coming down; quick, happy results are likely. small/steady flame: less energy (still good!); positive results likely/may be delayed. stay focused on your goals! small/weak flame: flickering and bending is generally a sign something is not working; timing may be off; asking for something unfavorable; if flame falters and dies, it's a sign your spell won't be granted at this time. high/dancing flame: possible chaotic energy; successful spell, possibly with some complications/other wills may be working against you. rapidly flickering: dims and brightens; spirits are present; usually indicates success and that your message was heard. blue flame: a sign of spiritual presence; higher spiritual beings have taken an interest in your spell; power added to the spell. popping and stuttering: noisy candles indicate that outside forces are present; communication w/spirits; can mean interference or sending a message to you/increase concentration on the spell. flame suddenly goes out: spell has been extinguished by outside forces; usually means spell did not work; sit and rethink/meditate longer. candle won't light: possible wick issue or this spell won't work for your purposes; the outcome is outside your control; try again after reconsidering your intention and cleansing/smudging your space. -- black pieces in wax: (unintentional) black debris signifies unintended consequences; more spell work may be required; karmic baggage/guilt. Try some cleaning up. black soot on glass: signals negative energy/interference. black soot on top of the jar only: negative opposition has likely been overcome. black soot entire/majority of jar: spell unsuccessful; may need to cleanse and repeat work another time. white soot on glass: rare, represents spiritual communication and assistance. candle forms tunnel/crater in middle: incomplete candle burns w/lots of leftover wax isn't a good sign; will/focus too weak; ineffective energy to complete the task; spell blocked. candle explodes/container breaks/cracks: dramatic endings in candle magick are a sign your spell has been stopped by a higher power and you shouldn't be doing that spell work; reconsider intention/spell.
wax left in the container: lots of wax left on the bottom or sides of the candle container can indicate blockages to the success of your spell; might need to cleanse space and try again.

a fun thing to add to your grimoire is your personal correspondences. this can be a section dedicated to the little things that are connected to you and you can use them when tailoring spells or rituals to yourself. think of this like any other correspondence page you would make for a subject (ex. the moon, colors, crystals, herbs, etc.) most of the things i have included down below either come from your birth date or personal preference. my list isn't exhaustive, it's merely a handful of possibilities. i prefer to have my personal correspondence page towards the front of my grimoire along with my beliefs and book blessings because it feels like it really personalizes the book. you can go a step further and include a picture of yourself (printed out or drawn) in this area.
