âAre you sure?â Barrel asked, reaching out to hold the otherâs hand, though he soon moved his grip to his wrist. He knew that, when he was sad, it helped to have a reminder that there was someone nearby who cared. âNo, no⌠youâre not a sad old man. Far from it! Just because youâre older than me doesnât mean anything.â He rubbed Bryantâs arm slightly, trying to offer him a reassuring smile. âWell⌠Iâm here if you want to talk about anything.â
âYeah, yeah, Iâm okay. You...make it easier.â Bryant flushed at the Barrelâs comforting touch, heart racing. Just kidding, you make it soooo much harder. âMaybe not in the way youâre thinking,â he muttered. He supposed that it was the whole still-in-school thing that made him sound a lot older than Barrel; like how itâs weird for a freshman to date a senior, but parents sometimes have 10 year age gaps. It hurt his head to think about. âYeah, I know. Thank you, really.âÂ
Bryant felt he should tell Barrel at least the basics of the situation. He felt obligated, maybe to save the younger boy some stress. I sound like a mom. âI, um...my mom, she...she was murdered, when I was a kid. It was a robbery. Me and my dad found her body, and...yeah.â He cleared his throat, his voice having given out at the end. He smiled shakily.Â
