Jane: Happy birthday Reuben!!!! 🎉 🎈
kennysmh:
Every one of Kenny’s limbs ached in protest as he pushed open the doors to the Messina complex that night. It was the heavy, bone-deep ache of being rushed off your feet all afternoon. Kenny had been volunteering for whatever menial task came his way or onto his desk, happy to be busy, as opposed to Call-Me-Hayley who continually filed her nails or took personal calls instead of doing paperwork. The precinct had become his own personal hell now that his chances had doubled of running into Harvey. He desperately needed to get away from the other man, whose eye he kept catching or who he was sure had quirked up the corner of his lips after he’d tripped over Call-Me-Hayley’s feet for the third time that day.
Kenny shook his head, pushing the anxiety-inducing thought from his mind as he headed for the elevator. He kept his eyes cast politely downward as Will fumbled to push the button for him, hoping to avoid an awkward interaction. There had been a few occasions where he’d tried to be polite to Jane’s best friend, but the university student always stumbled over his words, or cut conversation with the officer short. Tonight, still clad in his uniform, Will seemed more tense than ever. Kenny merely gave him a friendly nod, smiling slightly as he dipped into the elevator and up to his floor.
Reaching his and Jane’s flat, Kenny fumbled with his keys, attempting to balance a stack of papers as well as his bag as he unlocked the door. He presumed the living room would be plunged into darkness, certain Jane would be in bed at this late hour. He knew for a fact she had a shift at the aquarium tomorrow, and would be curled up in bed. He was therefore surprised to find their living room bathed in light, Jane sitting sleepy but upright at the table that dominated most of the kitchen space.
“Hello, you.” he echoed her greeting slightly, moving toward the table. He lazily slung the strap of his bag over the back of the un-occupied chair, dropping the files too before gravitating towards Jane’s side. As he leaned down to brush her cheek with his lips, he caught a whiff of her shampoo, and the aquarium. He couldn’t help but stifle a laugh. It wasn’t an unpleasant smell, but he suddenly occupied with the fanciful idea that perhaps Jane had been a mermaid, or something of the sort, in a past life.
“Certainly. What’s eating you?” he tried to joke, sinking into the chair across from her. He took up the steadily-cooling coffee, raising it to his lips without drinking. He choked down multiple cups of coffee at the office all day, but he knew Jane was only trying to be kind. At least hers didn’t taste like thick sludge, like you were choking with every swallow. Although Kenny didn’t like to complain.
He studied her face quietly, trying to decide how serious the issue was. Jane was impassive.
“Is everything alright?” he questioned.
Jane picked subconsciously at the rim of her coffee mug, the smell of the brewed coffee strongly hung in the air. She didn’t know how crucial the situation was realistically but it was enough to make Jane feel rather uncomfortable at her work place. It had been something that had been brewing for the past two weeks, give or take and she was near the boiling point of her sanity. She needed advice on how to handle it.
“I guess,” she paused, “I don’t really know.” Jane shifted her body to face more towards him, tucking one leg under the other as her side was pressed against the backrest of the chair, with her arm laying gently on top. “I love the aquarium, obviously, it’s my pride and joy.” She began, “I think I just need an outside opinion on whether or not I’m being oversensitive or paranoid.”
It all started nearly two weeks ago, Jane had been working a feeding with the dolphins, then her next stop was working with the seals. They had a new apprentice, though not assigned to her, had started following her around. Jane wasn’t authorized to do shadowing or training for new employees, per her own request. The idea of training someone else gave her anxiety. But every now and then she would catch the new guy watching from a window, which would have been fine had it been once or twice. She’d remind him that he needs to be with the worker that was training him and shoo him away. Then it started to seep into her break times, he would come in and try and speak with her, which again would have been fine until the conversation started to sound as if he was trying to control her life, tell her what she should and shouldn’t do, who she should and should not see.
“We have a new guy at work and I think I’m just at a loss at what to do. He makes me dread going to work if I know he’s there.” She mused, took a sip of her coffee before reading Kenny’s face, making sure she was starting out properly.
“That’s kind of why I’m up, still. I couldn’t sleep. He’s going to be there tomorrow and I just feel anxious. Decided to make a pot of coffee and if you were up to it, get your advice?”
She trusted Kenny, just as much as she trusted Will and Nathaniel. Kenny was a brother to her. “He started being overbearing, followed me around, tried to dictate who I hang out with and what I do on the weekends, mind the fact that I hardly know this guy. And it’s just been a continuous event since then. I tried talking with my boss and he’s, well, his nephew so I can’t really do much about it.”
Jane was half tempted to call her boss, tell him she wasn’t feeling well enough to go into work that morning. She was more than on edge. She hated it, she hated the idea of not wanting to go in to work regardless of the fact that she truly adored what she did for a living.

Jane: Happy birthday roomie!! I adore you so dearly!! I hope you found the little something I left for you in your room. Love you loads!
.fmlwilliam:
It always struck Will as odd whenever his friends reacted to his bruises with the same wide eyed stare as Jane currently wore. Only she, Nathaniel and Diana knew about the true nature of them, were privy to seeing them on a weekly basis as post-pub outings on a Friday night was his father’s favourite time to send his fists flying, yet they always seemed equally horrified to see which new injury he sported. It simply confused the doorman, given that the sight of his father charging towards him had stopped being an ugly surprise ages ago. He wore his bruises with the same frequency as he did his work tie, with that only being marginally less embarrassing.
He silently willed the horrified expression on Jane’s face to disappear, and was glad when she didn’t push like Nathaniel would. He loved his other best friend like he loved the girl in front of him, but he pressed too much. He was insistent that Will tell someone about his predicament, even though he knew fine well that could never happen, not if the Black siblings wanted to stay together. A part of Will wondered if Nathaniel’s urgency to let someone know was a way to dissuade his own guilt for being a bystander (as much as he couldn’t help that), but whenever he caught sight of the way his friends looked at him, not with pity, but with genuine affection and concern, the thought left him feeling hot with shame.
Letting Jane guide him into her apartment, he knew right away that Kenny wasn’t home. Jane wouldn’t make him sit on the couch if he was, so Will let himself relaxed and perched on the edge of the sofa cushion.
Her quiet words prompted a small smile to appear on his face. They held no expectancy or demand, just a gentle confirmation that, should Will need someone to talk to about the situation, he had Jane. He knew that, of course, and couldn’t help the mild guilt that stirred up in him when he silently acknowledged the fact that he would probably never take her up on that offer.
“I have about an hour,” he told her, glancing towards the clock on a nearby shelf. Tugging nervously at his tie, he glanced sideways at Jane.
“Try not to make me look like a drag queen?” came his words, a soft humourous lilt in his tone. It was a tiny comment that slipped through his mouth each time he appeared on Jane’s doorstep for his routine ‘cover up’, spawning from the first time he had let her dab at his face with foundation. Nathaniel had sat at the side with Diana, deciding it was appropriate to cut through the awkward silence with a lame and borderline offensive joke about Will taking the step he needed to embark on a career as a drag queen. As stupid as the quip was, it was an inside joke that Will liked to fall back on whenever situations like these arose.
“How was work, by the way?” he asked Jane, eager to talk about something else as a means of distraction. He lifted a hand to playfully twirl a lock of Jane’s damp hair around his finger. “You’ve been swimming.”
Jane smiled politely, she knew that Will didn’t have to tell her anything that he didn’t wish to, she knew that Will also knew that. She never pushed him, if he was ever at any point uncomfortable talking about his home, that was a topic she knew not to pry it, should the conversation crack his shell more than it needed. The topic of home was something that usually couldn’t be dealt out so delicately with Will. He mostly kept conversation to himself about it but the fact that he was willing to come to her for help, no matter what the help was, was something to Jane. He trusted her enough with it, making Jane’s trust soar even higher towards Will. Jane made a pact to herself, to protect Will as much as she could. Should make up help it, it was the most important thing about the day. Will was just lucky he managed to show up after her shower. She imaged smelling fishy this close to her friend probably wouldn’t be the most preferable settings.
“You know, you’re really lucky I’m not Nathaniel.” She smiled jokingly, gently dabbing concealer around the bruised areas, careful not to place much pressure upon the already wounded skin. “You sure you don’t want bright purple lips and sparkling yellow shadow? It’d really make your eyes pop.” She teased, given the state he was in and the reason he was in it was a heavy topic. Sometimes joking was really the only way to push through it. Some days they stayed serious, not wanting to act like whatever happened didn’t happen. But some days humor was the only rhyme or reason.
“Well,” she began, swapping out the concealer for light shade of foundation, setting the cover up in so flaking off through the day, questions stirring while the bruises surface was the last thing he had to worry about. “One of the seals thought he was being a cheeky bastard and nudged me into the pool while I was working with his buddy.” She smiled at the thought. She was sure it would have been amusing to see had she been someone else. “You’re lucky you showed up as you did, not ten minutes earlier.” She motioned at his finger, her wet hair clinging to it. “Otherwise I’d smell like sushi. You might come out looking like the little mermaid with that influence.”
“You’ll have to come by next week.” She carried on, hoping the change of topic was enough of a distraction for Will’s comfort. “We’re having an open house, mostly where the employees basically hand out invitations for friends and families and what not. Kind of like a behind the scenes stuff that’s not open to the public. And, I mean, you basically are family. If you aren’t busy, I mean.” Jane looked up to Will, smiling. Though, his face was hardly as happy as hers. She hated how much he had to go through. What Jane wouldn’t give to wail on the one that did this to her. “I'd just recommend to avoid playing petting zoo with the piranhas. They’ll love you but you won’t love them.”
“How’s work going for you?”

Wardo: Ulysses is my own personal cockroach, the bastard.
Wardo: Are you giving me permission to steal a catfish from the aquarium? I think you are.
Wardo: While I'm there, I might throw Ulysses in the shark tank along with Leroy.
Jane: I said turn Ulysses into a catfish not sharkbait ooh ha ha
Jane: We don't have catfish here so you can steal one from here all you want. Kudos if you actually make it happen.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Oh my God.
Wardo: I'm sorry to say that he is, unfortunately, alive. Probably used up one of his nine lives but the fucker's still kicking.
Wardo: He's hissing at me.
Jane: I feel like cats are like cockroaches and they never die.
Jane: You know, if you exchanged the cat for a catfish, it wouldn't ever hiss at you or jump out the window. I don't think anyone would notice the exchange really.
Jane: They don't have nine lives though but they also wouldn't lose theirs by jumping out a window.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Prove it.
Wardo: HA!!!
Wardo: fuck wait
Wardo: hang on i just laughed so hard i gave louis' cat a fright and he fell out the window
Jane: YOU DID WHAT????
Jane: WARDO
Jane: GO GET THE CAT BACK
Jane: please tell me your flat is like.... floor level.
Jane: does the cat at least bounce well or is it a typical cat where it lands on all fours?
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: You don't deserve me or my hashtags.
Wardo: I don't actually think that's a real porno. I'm just saying there's potential for it to be. Because those two will definitely have sex in the next movie.
Jane: Yes I do, otterboy.
Jane: I like how you actually know the facts about it. But yeah, there is. I could genuinely see it happen. I don't think Steve saying he could do this all day was a coincidence.
TEXT: JANE
Jane: BE PROUD. They ARE downright cute as heck.
Jane: I'll sing at your funeral if it makes you feel better. I'll bring otters too.
Jane: BECAUSE DIERKS IS AN ACTUAL PUPPY. Everyone knows it. You just need to stop lying to yourself. You'll feel better. Wardo, you just need to give in to the red, white and lube.
Jane: BLUE. RED WHITE AND BLUE. BLUE. LIKE MY NICKNAME. BLUE BLUE BLUE.
Jane: jesus christ.
Wardo: I mean, they're alright. Do you follow me on Instagram? /I'm/ cute as heck.
Wardo: An otter funeral. Make sure I get that.
Wardo: Red, white and lube. Is that the name of a Cap porno? Him and the metal arm guy? Getting it on? I might actually watch that.
Jane: Unfortunately I am. It was like one of those follows where you followed me and it was awkward if I didn't follow back.
Jane: I'm KIDDING. Yours cracks me up. You're such a little shit I love it.
Jane: Idk I think that's something that you should ask Ivy.
Jane: Wait, someone actually made that??? I'm not surprised but I'm surprised. But I'm not surprised. Look at you having some Marvel knowledge that I did not. I'm impressed.
Jane: And I don't even have that much Marvel knowledge
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: People are actually saying that? Give me a second to decide whether or not I'm emnarrassed or proud.
Wardo: I'm going to talk myself into an early grave at this point.
Wardo: WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE CAPTAIN AMERICA SO MUCH?
Jane: BE PROUD. They ARE downright cute as heck.
Jane: I'll sing at your funeral if it makes you feel better. I'll bring otters too.
Jane: BECAUSE DIERKS IS AN ACTUAL PUPPY. Everyone knows it. You just need to stop lying to yourself. You'll feel better. Wardo, you just need to give in to the red, white and lube.
Jane: BLUE. RED WHITE AND BLUE. BLUE. LIKE MY NICKNAME. BLUE BLUE BLUE.
Jane: jesus christ.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Oh, she's seen more than the movies ;)
Wardo: I'm kidding. She's going to kill me for that. I promise she hasn't seen Dierks' dick yet. Why am I still talking?
Wardo: That hurts, Janey!
Wardo: Classic Trump. Did you know I can still go back to the US and vote?
Jane: I've seen the instagrams. I don't follow her bc I don't really know her but I've seen the buzzfeed articles where they talk about how they're the couple that saved hollywood since brangelina split.
Jane: Your talking is why we like you.
Jane: Are you going to go Captain America style and save the US and vote? Your country needs you, Steve.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: I've seen none of the movies. I just know you're insulting me.
Wardo: Rob a bank, no business has ever been built on ethically positive foundations.
Wardo: Oh my God, I love this guy. I wanna see him again.
Jane: I bet your friend Ivy has.
Jane: I like her more than you already.
Jane: Just ask Donald Trump.
Jane: OHHHHHH BA DUM TISSSSS I'll be here all week
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Hey! In what world am I not the absolute picture of innocence? Minus the whole sketchy ban I have.
Wardo: Quit your job. Do it now. Set up Jane's Fish Emporium and I'll givey you business on the daily. Better yet, you won't have to work with Leroy anymore.
Wardo: You know who you should invite to work with you though? The sea turtle guy that I spoke to once. We talked for five minutes and in that short space of time he referred to his penis as Moby Dick. It was made in poor taste but somewhat appealed to my literary interests and, given our surroundings, was atmospherically appropriate. I'm a fan.
Jane: In this world, then probably off to Mars bc you know there's probably some sort of civilization there. I've seen The Martian. Then if we jump into those superhero movies that god dude lives in Asgard... I think that's another world you wouldn't be innocent on.
Jane: LSAJHG IM DOING IT.
Jane: Only no, I need money. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Jane: HE STILL COMES IN. I think he came in like three weeks ago. He's a hoot. Last time I think he was drunk because he kept walking into the walls of the walkway that has the tank encompassing the ceiling and sides. I think it was too much reflection for him to process which way was the actual walkway.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Well, if you /could/ talk to them then they'd definitely tell you that I'm innocent.
Wardo: If I get 'banned' again for bringing my partner in terror, I'm gonna need you to overrule that vote. And also get me an otter to pet, because I forgot where we stood on the whole otter thing. Am I getting to pet one? Hug one? Take one home and raise it as my own?
Jane: Wardo, any person that knows you would still say you aren't innocent. I don't need a fish to lie to me. I don't need that kind of heartbreak.
Jane: If you get banned I'm quitting. I'll open my own aquarium. It'll be like a petting zoo for fish. An aquarium where only men named Wardo can actually buy our otters and take them home to raise at on your own with the only exception that I get to visit it whenever I want.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Preparations? Really? You're actually gonna take precautions against me? I'm harless, ask the jellyfish.
Wardo: Jane, you do realise that by inviting Ivy along, you're basically implying that the female version of me is also welcome when I show up? The good news is, we'll probably terrify Leroy.
Jane: I would ask the jellyfish but unfortunately I'm not Dr. Doolittle, contrary to popular belief. It's sad, I know.
Jane: What is the problem with this scenario? I see none.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: I just wanted to see if it was bouncy on top. And now I'll never know. Unless I break my promise and try to touch one again. Which is likely.
Wardo: Jane, let me in to see the otters!
Wardo: This is my kind of deal, I'm in.
Wardo: Leroy.
Wardo: Ah, now Finding Nemo references. Those, I'm familiar with. It's not making Leroy seem less creepy. You'll definitely need those sharks.
Jane: You probably will but I think the head hancho man kind of expects it a this point. We'll have preparation this time, it's fine. Just next time don't ask me to swallow it when it stings you.
Jane: GOOD DEAL. I'll make it happen. AND TELL ME ABOUT IT. When are you coming? I need to strategically plan this. You can bring your Ivy pal too. She sounds like she would be a great addition from how you talk about her.
TEXT: JANE
Wardo: Unlike Nemo, I'm easy to find. When I'm not working or at college, I'm standing outside this here aquarium I thought I was previously banned from. Because I finally saw Finding Dory. And I wanna pet an otter. Make it happen, Janey.
Wardo: Alright fine, I'll bring you your damn lemonade. You're so demanding.
Wardo: LEROY.
Wardo: Okay, sorry, I'm be serious. But. Leroy.
Wardo: By the way, I know you just made a Star Wars reference, I just have no idea what it means. He sound like a little creep though, I can sort him out.
Jane: Sure as hell not less rebellious though. You did try and touch a jelly though. Dory as hell. I saw you standing down below. It was bitter sweet. You looked like you were in admiration. I didn't have the heart to interrupt it.
Jane: I'll make the otters happen if you make the sharks happen. I think it sounds fair.
Jane: LOOK it starts with an L. I don't typically try and get close and comfy with creeps. Or people who don't understand Star Wars references. BUT if you want a reference you'll understand I'll break this down. You know those annoying as heck MINE MINE MINE birds in Nemo? That's him.
