Bublish Crowdfunding Project on IndieGoGo In January, Bublish will launch a crowdfunding project on IndieGoGo. We'll have more details soon, but our goal is to raise enough money to build two important new features for Bublish: 1. Create a customized, genre-specific reader email campaign with book bubbles. This means your book bubbles will be delivered to the emails of readers interested in the genres of your books. This feature will help you sell more books through Bublish. 2. Build the foundations of our unique recommendation engine, which will be informed by readers sampling and engaging with your book bubbles. Here's how you can help us raise the money to make Bublish even better: 1. Sign up to be part of our "Street Team" -- Help us spread the word. Bublish's IndieGoGo campaign will last for about five weeks. During that time, we'd be asking you to actively spread the word and get people excited about supporting Bublish. If you're interested, email indo [at] bublish [dot] com. 2. Make a financial pledge -- When you're crowdfunding, every penny helps. We need your support to reach our fundraising goal. Bublish is going to offer some really cool incentives (social media intensives, tickets to PubSmart and more). More details to come. 3. Tell a friend about Bublish! Even if you can't commit to our street team, every share and every post counts. So many of you have written about Bublish on your blogs before. We are so grateful.. You're such an amazing community of writers and readers. We know we can count on you.

On this chilly morning, thinking back to #summer #reading.
The Importance of Sharing
Last night at dinner, my four-year-old son complained that he was hungry. When asked what he’d like to eat, he replied, “I don’t know. I’m hungry.” His eight-year-old sister was already enjoying her chickpea salad when she asked, “Would you like to try what I am having? It’s super delicious!” He hesitantly accepted her offering, and after the first taste said enthusiastically, “Hey, I want some more!”
You should’ve seen the smile on my daughter’s face. I asked her how it made her feel knowing her little brother had tasted something for the first time because SHE liked it. “I love to share,” she told me. That response got me thinking.
It’s true. Most of us love to share. There’s something rewarding about sharing something you enjoy and having the receiver delight in your suggestion. According to an article in The New York Times called, “Psychology of Sharing,” there are six different personas of sharing:
Altruist – sharers who are helpful, reliable, thoughtful, connected, and use email to share
Careerist – sharers who are intelligent business networkers and are likely to share content on LinkedIn
Hipster – sharers who are creative, young and popular. They consume content that is on the cutting edge and care about defining their identity. They rarely use email.
Boomerangs – sharers who share information to get a reaction and feel validated. They are empowered by social media and tend to use both Twitter and Facebook
Connectors – sharers who are creative, relaxed, thoughtful, planners. They use both email and Facebook.
Selectives – sharers who are resourceful, careful and thoughtful. They share content that is informative and also use email to share content with individuals.
After finishing a book that you’ve thoroughly enjoyed, what do you do? Do you share your new literary find with others? What was the last book that you recommended? What type of sharer are you?

Why Authors Become Celebrities
For some reason, most moviegoers aren’t interested in learning about the person who wrote the screenplay for their favorite movies. It’s the actors who take center stage in this medium. With books, it’s different. Many bestselling authors are celebrities.
This got me thinking…why the difference?
A couple of theories came to mind. First, movies are often adaptations of books, so perhaps moviegoers view screenwriters as interpreters rather than creators. Second, movies are primarily visual. It takes a whole team of people to create a movie scene – visual effects technicians, set people, costume artists, location teams, etc. It’s difficult to point to one person as a movie’s creator.
With a book, worlds are created by one person, the author. I think this is the key difference. Authors create entire worlds, imaginary characters and, of course, intricate plots using only words to engage. A good writer inspires a reader’s imagination. Makes us believe. Compels us to visualize the worlds they have created. There’s something rather extraordinary about that power and I think it makes us want to learn about the creator, the author.
So that’s my theory about why we turn authors into celebrities, but not screenwriters. What’s your theory?

What is Your Strategy for This New Book Marketplace?
The Frankfurt Book Fair opens this week in Germany. As the world’s largest trade show for books, it’s an important barometer of the latest trends in publishing. This year’s fair makes clear that publishing has now moved past the first wave of disruption that occurred with the transition to digital books, and is in the middle of a second wave of disruption—the rise of the self-published author.
What does this mean for you as a reader? More selection, for one thing. The “gatekeepers,” as the agents and major publishing houses used to be called, no longer control the marketplace. Anyone can become a published author now. This means more books are being published than ever. Some of the top selling books in the world are now self-published.
Greater competition leads to competitive pricing, so readers can expect to pay less for books, too. More selection at a better price! What could be better for readers? As a recent article in Forbes stated, “robust competition has done what it nearly always does – improve market efficiency. Readers, authors and publishers all see benefits.”
There is a flip side to this abundant book marketplace, though. With more books and fewer physical bookstores, there is less curation. Online retailers have no shelf space restrictions, so there’s no need to weed out anything. More is better in online retailing, but this means readers must sort through a much wider range of quality.
The combination of more books and fewer gatekeepers and curators, makes discovery a new challenge for readers. The online shopping experience isn’t really set up for browsing. It’s primarily search driven, designed to get readers to the books they already know about.
So what’s your experience as a reader trying to navigate this new crowded book marketplace?
