An illustrative map I made for a micro-guide printed map project I did with other design friends - Wander. Inksurge did the identity and the graphic design, I did most of the illustrations, Dang Sering & Kissa Castaneda the curation and copy, Charles Buenconsejo for the photographs. You can get copies of the maps and postcards from Fully Booked High Street, Heima Brixton & 98B Collaboratory. :)

On Prince St., between Mercer and Broadway, an old man set’s up a kiosk to sell old maps. I asked him if he had any South East Asian maps, and he asked me if I was looking for a particular country.
"Uhm, I was wondering if you got any maps that have the Philippines on it."
"As a matter of fact, I think I do, let me check in my truck."
It turns out he did. I got this 1940’s World War 2- Rand McNally Philippine Map. It is now currently hanging on my wall as a decal.
Mapping the poverty rates in the Philippine archipelago

The top most land mass is Luzon. The whitest part is the National Capital Region.
The middle islands make up Visayas. The light red areas of that sock-shaped island is the province of Negros Occidental and the large island north-west of it is Panay. The area is well known for its rich land owning families, most of whom are of Spanish descent and its rich Chinese-Visayan inhabitants. Spread throughout the Visayan region are insurgency movements (Communists) and Islamic secessionists.
The southernmost landmass is Mindanao. The Zamboanga Peninsula (penis-shaped area at the western part) was just attacked by one of the several Islamic secessionist movements prevalent in Southwestern Mindanao. The southernmost archipelago is known to be filled with secessionists and terrorist groups. The light colored area of Mindanao (southeast) are the Davao provinces. There are a lot of expats in Western Eastern Mindanao.
Woah, Western Visayas (Panay Island and Negros Occidental Province ) is less poor than the surrounding islands!? Wat…
Central Visayas (east of Negros Occidental) and Palawan (long island in the westernmost area of the map) are well known tourist destinations and Cebu Island has quite a number of international schools. I thought they’d be less poor.
Inspired by a T-shirt design by Aaron Hogg entitled “Para-normal US”and the typographical map work of Paula Scher, this is Paranormal Philippines. Adding a twist of my own as you can see in the little drawings to illustrate the mythological creatures of the Philippines. A translation using my country’s very own folklore and mythology.
