neither i nor this blog are cohesive enough to warrant this but it’s here anyway
the name's Aster (he/him) (19 y/o)
big ol' fan of many things, including but very much not limited to: theatre (esp starkid productions but trust me it varies xx), allll of Jim Henson's works (i <3 u fraggle rock), and a lot of just kind of inherently bad media.
i feel like the people aren’t crazy enough about bill woodward. he’s the most boring man alive. he’s divorced. he loves mamma mia. he doesn’t like his daughter’s stoner girlfriend. he’s gonna kick ted’s head. he drinks a shirley temple during the end of the world in case they need a designated driver. he spent like 100 dollars trying to win a carnival game so he can get a lame ass stuffed animal for his teenage daughter because she’s mad he dropped her phone. he loves his daughter so much he also has no idea how anything works. he’s paul’s best friend. he’s a little bit of a bitch sometimes. he gets a caramel frappe every day. he has genuinely one of the most gut-wrenching deaths in the entire starkid universe. he’s played by corey dorris what more do you people want.
Paintings done this morning no breakfast just woke up opened clip studio paint immediately and drank a coffee before locking tf in and burning out after three hours of nonstop art
HEY BUG EATER (love the name by the way man), fellow theater person here, I need to hear more about how the Night in the Woods is like expressionist theater take, I love NITW and I love theater and I want to know more tell me tell me!
Also what are your favorite shows? Plays, musicals, anything really.
i’m absolutely beyond willing to elaborate on this lmao (full disclosure it’s been a while since i’ve done a full playthrough of nitw)
In expressionist theatre, characters are often nameless, or have non-literal names, an example of this is how in the original play version of Spring Awakening, the teachers are named after schoolyard insults that would have been directed at teachers. This abstraction from reality is often done because the characters serve a greater purpose of representing issues, concepts, or thoughts & feelings, of both the protagonist and the world as a whole. I think this ties in to the character design in nitw, ie, how everyone is represented as an animal.
In expressionism, the intent was to create focus on the characters, thoughts, feelings, events, and concepts, rather than the exact, literal, hyper-realistic events taking place. I think this is also relevant in nitw, the story benefits from simplistic animal designs.
Expressionist theatre also uses abstract, dream-like sequences to show the protagonist’s feelings (sounds familiar!!!!)
obviously this is just my take, it might not be 100% accurate & anyone is free to disagree lol. nitw means a lot to me and i relate to mae a lot as a protagonist, + expressionist theatre has been an interest of mine for a while, so i thought the parallels were interesting
(and for the record my favourite shows are hadestown, great comet, next to normal, spring awakening, starlight express, + the entire starkid discography (and more!!!!) :D
currently thinking about how someone i know compared the use of animals / anthropomorphism in Night In The Woods to expressionist theatre. galaxy brain.
Taking a break from the Hadestown Art to draw these two BECAUSE WHAT THE FUUUUCK….I watched The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry for the first time a couple weeks ago. Lives were changed.
So OF COURSE I had to draw Noah and Jack as the Balladeer/David Fry….they’re both unreal THEIR VOICES. THEIR ACTING. Don’t get me started because I won’t stop.💔
Guess this means I can finally mention the "Project" Ive been working on
YES THAT IS MY ART IN THE PROFILE PICTURE FOR THE PAGE!!! Jeff asked me a while back if he could use my fanart to promote the show (in addition to making some extra art for it that will be revealed Later wink wink) and he has been SUCH a sweetheart and so awesome to work with! This project is very literally a dream come true for me. This show is so cool and I'm so excited for more to be revealed about it!!!
