I am begging the FDA to require that companies CANNOT just put "spices" as an ingredient but have to label the spices.
"Spices" can mean "this has some oregano and black pepper in it" or it can mean "this has cumin cayenne and paprika and if you eat this you will be sick in bed in pain for a week" for me.
Seriously, this is an allergy issue and a huge oversight on the part of corporations.
Require detailed labeling of spices used in packaged foods NOW.

As someone who has to avoid all curry because one incompletely labeled jar of curry powder made her violently sick 30 years ago, THIS.

My friend is DEATHLY allergic to cinnamon. Like, she feels her throat closing up anytime our campus cafeteria has cinnamon rolls. This could LITERALLY kill her.

I can't tell you the looks i got when I told people that instead of continuing to write YA novels that sold a lot of copies, I was going to write a series of small essays reviewing facets of human experience on a five-star scale.
And so I have to confess it is extremely meaningful to me that The Anthropocene Reviewed has not just hung around but found a growing audience, so much so that it will re-enter the New York Times bestseller list next week, four years after its initial publication.
Thanks to everyone who has kept that little book alive even as it becomes progressively less timely. What a joy.
I am in the middle of reading it and some of your essays have genuinely made me reflect and rethink the way I view not just the subject of the essay, but experience as a whole, and I want to thank you for that. I have long past your sons small "weaf" but still think about it daily because it reminds me of a dream I had.
I was talking with a mentor of mine about my life and how (delightfully) busy I was, and he said to make sure that even within chaos to take some time to feel each individual blade of grass and watch a butterfly exist and fly in a moment that will never exist again. The next day was the busiest of them all, and that night I had a dream that asked "Did you watch the butterfly?"
The "weaf" made me realize how I should be treating the world around me. Not just recognizing that each moment is fleeting in a very sad, mature way, but to also maintain the childish excitement of every little thing ever.
Thank you and your son. I'm gonna go look at a weaf
