In the final episode of the sitcom, “Webster,” Webster is transported hundreds of years into the future, where he gets some advice about growing up from Lieutenant Worf. For many years in the early days of the internet, this episode was widely believed to be a hoax or fever dream, however, it has completely surfaced since originally airing on March 10, 1989. 

Webster was a show about a white family who adopt a black child, a premise that was extremely popular at the time in the network sitcom world. When this episode was made, actor Emmanuel Lewis (Webster) was 17 years old, as he had reduced growth due to health issues. He found it difficult to not act his age, which is why the series ended.

no I don’t like it because there’s something INCREDIBLY dystopian about being forced to soften terms for basic parts of the human experience like death and sex (and even more so terms for oppressed minorities- call me a “le-dollar sign-bian” and I will bite you) purely because advertisers and corporations demand it

The problem with the 'not like other girls' YA phenomenon is that the books almost inevitably go out of their way to use the ostensible differences to shame other girls while said character is basically always the epitome of what our western society desires girls to be, right down to being skinny, white, and symmetrical. Specifically in YA it is used to elevate a character who already meets society's current standards without trying, while shaming people (mostly girls) for trying.

This is specifically a problem with YA fiction, not real people who feel ostracized by societal standards and the very real enforced gender norms.

So if I, in my critical posts on YA fiction, criticize the 'not like other girls' TROPE

This is what I am criticizing

Not real people who face bullying and oppression for not conforming or feeling like what society says girls are or should be

I think I've said this before, but it's worth saying again: characters are not real people and cannot make their own decisions or feel their own feelings. An author wrote them doing or feeling these things, and unfortunately in YA fiction especially this trope is often used to shame (especially but not exclusively) girls who have to work to meet societal standards and expectations.

Real people feeling real ways is something entirely different.

I have a theory that a lot of such authors are self-inserting and wish-fulfilling at the same time, and possibly not aware of one or both parts of it.

They themselves felt growing up that they didn't fit in, so the protagonist does too. But they want to create the character they wanted to be/look like, so they do. And then you get this big disconnect, because they're trying to have their cake and eat it, as it were
