Aaaaand this is probably staring me in the face, but I can never spot what people mean by 'lines'. I can see when a skater is graceful, so yess yuzuru's movements are very refined and gorgeous and precise but I cant pause a frame and be like BAM! Line! Help?
Aaaaand I will tell you your confusion is totally understandable. “Line” is a pretty vague term to be honest. I believe it’s one of those concepts that got carried over to figure skating from classical ballet (another example of those which you might’ve heard of is “toe point”). In the ballet world, “line” refers to the outline the dancer creates with their body while performing. Note that it’s not always straight lines we’re talking about, rather it’s about how the entirety of the dancer’s body, their arms, their legs, their torso and their head, works together in harmony. For example in this classical image of a classical ballet position, the arabesque, you can see how the dancer is using her whole body, from the point of her toe to the arch of her back to the tip of her fingers to the tilt of her head to create a shape that is very much pleasing to the eyes.
Now when most people talk about “line” in figure skating, they mean a rough equivalence of its ballet counterpart. I say it’s a rough equivalence, because obviously skating and ballet are two very different forms of performance and it’s never a good idea to indiscriminately use ballet concepts to evaluate skating, which is why you won’t be able to find the word “line” in the meaning we’re discussing anywhere in the ISU’s technical panel handbook or program component guideline. I can’t speak for everyone, but personally when I use the word “line” I’m thinking in terms of the way skaters carry themselves: how they use their body while doing turns/steps/other transitions, the shape they create while spinning, the extension and balance they achieve as they exit jumps, as well as smaller details like whether or not they choose to incorporate their hands into their movements. Some examples?
Sorry for the crap image quality, you wanted frames that say BAM! Line! so I legit went and did just that, literally pausing videos and taking screenshots :))
Yet again I can’t stress enough that “line” is at best an obscure concept in skating: it’s not officially defined anywhere so any judgment in that area is subjective. Saying you prefer a skater’s line over another’s has the same ring as saying whether or not you can “connect” with their program - it’s more a matter of taste than anything. I obviously think that Yuzuru’s line is the best out there (it is actually the one aspect of his skating that I love the most, on par with his musicality), but what it really means is that the way he carries himself matches best with my personal sense of aesthetics. I am aware that others may disagree with me and that, by no means, makes their opinion any less valid than mine :)
when you ask bae to teach you 😂
well, you can’t blame javi for checking out yuzu because that boy’s body is 👌👌🔥🔥 💯 💯

Yuzuru Hanyu at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games: A Recap
cr: 樱桃之远__
“If he skates a clean short and a clean long, I might think he might be unbeatable,” Fernández said of Hanyu.
A few moments later, Hanyu arrived in the interview area, hugged Fernández, removed the shiny new gold medal from his own neck and placed it around the Spaniard’s.
