A Few Things About BTS World
There’s a part in the game called “Another Story”, which has received a ton of criticism by ARMY for being creepy. And it is. Because, as some argue, it normalizes sasaeng behavior. How? You literally can’t avoid stalking the boys because the game makes you play “Another Story”, where the character follows the members everywhere to get close to them and take down their defenses so they will like and befriend the character. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be cute??? But what’s even more disturbing is that the maknae line are MINORS and the character follows anyway and YOU have to follow because you can’t avoid this part of the game.
They follow Jungkook to a high school and watch him from afar..
Move in with Jimin who they just met (into his storage room) after tracking him down..
Follow Taehyung to the countryside (a 5hr trip) and has to come up with an excuse as to why they’re even there
They also do their best to get close to all the members in a way that’s really intrusive (by getting close to their family and friends, another way to break down reservations and get the members to accept them). And this is just maknae line. I saw all this by playing for 2-3 days but it’s gross and I had to quit. Oh AND you can only be a female character??
BTS are literally harassed every day by sasaengs following them, calling them, paying people to take intimate pictures of them. And yet Bighit had the audacity to include this in BTS World..
There’s also debate about how they exaggerated the boys’ personalities and controversy over including Jimin’s eating disorder as part of the storyline with some agreeing and others vehemently disagreeing that it’s okay.
I love BTS and I can respect a few things about Bighit as a company but this isn’t it.
Oh my god, I read just the other day that Hoseok’s sister had to post on her instagram for fans to stop calling her. I don’t follow her because that is creepy. This is awful. I’m soooo glad I didn’t download this game so I could laugh at Yoongi yelling at me.
ARMYs, Ageism and Alex Williamson
For those who don’t know about the total fuckery that’s been happening on stan twt - some Aussie comedian tweeted a “joke” about how BTS has generic sounding vocals and naturally, the ARMYs pounced. If it had ended there with just a bunch of fans clowning the guy that dissed their faves then it would have just been some typical case of ARMYs being sensitive and overprotective as usual. But nope, they took it a step further and supposedly dug up the guy’s IP address, location, work, contacts, internet history, etc. who knows what else, then contacted his boss with a thread of his tweets in an attempt to get him fired.
Whenever you try to bring up that they’ve crossed a line, they’ll gladly link you to a thread they’ve made of his racist/misogynistic/homophobic tweets, of course, not understanding that they are purely satire because surprise - they’ve never been exposed to that shit before when it’s rampant on the internet. They stick vehemently to the argument that those kinds of jokes are never funny and that it’s the reason they should ruin his life.
This would be fair enough… if they’ve always had a problem with dark humor and went after every comedian that told them, but nope, it’s the one man that had the audacity to insult BTS - virtually proving his point about the maturity level of the fanbase. The fact that they don’t understand that what this guy is portraying is an asshole persona, telling insensitive jokes for the sake of shock, not actually reflecting his personal views - only goes to further his point that the fans are arrogant and inexperienced.
I personally find Alex’s jokes rather uncreative and bland but it’s really no different from the sort of humor I’ve come across for many years now. Dark humor is still considered controversial and is a debate that’s still ongoing but what happened here was not a nuanced conversation about right and wrong - it was entitled fans coming up with justification for violating someone’s privacy and demonstrating again how much they’ve stroked their own egos to the point where they feel the world needs to bend to their will.
This isn’t “protecting the boys.” Worse things have been said about them and at the MOST if BTS had found out about his tweets, they would have been a little offended (given they cared enough about some random white dude in Australia that doesn’t like their music). You don’t need to love his sense of humor - in fact you don’t even need to give this guy attention at all, but you chose to do so just as he probably predicted you would.
Instead of channeling all your energy into this one guy that says fucked up shit for an audience that understands it as satire, why don’t you go after actual racists/misogynists/homophobes? Why don’t you try to ruin the lives of people doing it to victimize the vulnerable? Because this was never an issue of prejudice and you know that.
I have no doubt ARMYs are capable of doing amazing things. Donating to charities, raising awareness, being the catalyst of BTS’s success. FOCUS ON THOSE THINGS. Things that don’t make the entirety of this fandom look irrational and perpetuating the gross image people already have of us.
Just my two cents on this total clusterfuck.
I kinda see both sides of this argument, because I personally don’t see shock humor as funny, but I also really kinda hate the cancel culture we live in. While I expected to see some back and forth, they REALLY went forward. Like he probably should have stopped engaging them, but they should have just realized he was trolling them and left it at that, but they had to come out on top. And the sad thing is, we see this behavior everyday, not just from army, but other groups as well. Someone is always getting their past mistakes brought out and dragged. Sometimes they spring back from it, but sometimes it just outright kills their career. Especially when you see people like Shane Dawson getting dragged these days for his early youtube videos and podcast shock fodder. Was his jokes in poor taste? Yes. But did people find it funny? Back then? Yes.
I understand where Army is coming from wanting to protect the band and stuff, but some of the stuff I read in that tag on twitter could land some of them in hot water. The finding his IP address and getting his personal information from it is doxing, which is illegal, not to mention they found his credit card and DMed his girlfriend telling her to leave him. They also found his parents and found out they are allegedly distantly related. And what also doesn’t sit well with me is BigHit is not saying anything. Not calling them off. Not telling them to cut it out. Not saying “We accept 20 To One’s apology, please don’t contact any party involved anymore, the issue is solved.”
There is a really good reason I try to stay far as away from the fandom as I can while enjoying BTS. This whole cluster fuck one of those reasons.
a note for BTS fans
lately i’ve been seeing a lot of people, BTS fans and non-fans alike, saying “I hate ARMY.” if you ask them why, the response is mostly that “ARMY is annoying/obnoxious/etc.” tbh all of the BTS fans I know are really chill and nice people, and you probably feel the same way. yes, there are annoying comments on twitter and youtube, but those things are more of a nuisance than something that’s actually harming the boys (e.g. sasaeng behavior), and i could cherry pick “bad fans” from every fandom. (btw, when have youtube comments ever been a good representation of anything?)
what IS harming bangtan is when their own fans refuse to call themselves fans. if there is a negative stereotype about ARMY, isn’t it our job to fight that and make our fandom’s image better, instead of distancing ourselves from it and validating that stereotype? when BTS fans THEMSELVES say that they “hate ARMY,” they’re making it okay for non-fans to say the same thing. i’m sure most of you reading this are those “chill” fans who do not like the negative image that ARMY has. if that’s you, then please, do not hesitate to call yourself ARMY, because we are the only people who can improve our own image.
i’ve seen countless people say that the only reason they won’t give BTS a chance is because of the negative image that ARMY has. by perpetuating this image, we’re actively hurting bangtan. so be proud of what you are, show everyone that ARMY are not all annoying children, but a very diverse and welcoming fandom. if you do come across some of those annoying fans, please educate them or ignore them, because those types of people exist in every fandom.
i’m tired of letting a small group of people ruin a name that bangtan gave us.
While I agree with this, us as a fandom have got to improve and set examples for others. There is a reason people find us obnoxious. Because we are. We go on news posts, youtube videos, ect about other kpop groups and talk about BTS. That needs to stop. We go on members solo V Live’s and ask for members who are not present and hurt that members feelings to the point where they hand their phone to another member and walk away. That needs to stop. We which hunt and verbally attack girls who get exclusive photo’s of the boys because they are friends of a members family (like that girl who was friends with Hoseok’s sister). That needs to fucking stop. We need to give the guys personal space when on vacation, when traveling, and just in general. Big Hit had to actually threaten to take away fan cafe memberships because some of us do not know boundaries. We as a fandom need to improve our image. The road to people no longer thinking we are horrible starts with the fandom chilling the fuck out. It starts with us.
Yayyyy, I am gone for a few months and come back to find more fans disrespecting Hoseok. I cannot hate this fandom enough sometimes. Stop it.
