the sheer irony of reblogging that john post and then you scroll one post down on my blog and it’s a gifset of john that i’ve tagged “i can fix him.” mental illness

some people’s interpretations of john’s parenting is so strange to me. like he’s both at once the evil dictator micro-managing every second of his kids’ lives and also the world’s most absent father who never once made dinner or did laundry or heated up a baby bottle. i’m not a “john apologist” but it’s obvious that he was a complicated man who loved his kids and his role in their lives was complex. sam’s re-telling of their childhood isn’t 100% accurate. dean’s re-telling of their childhood isn’t 100% accurate. dean aged 4 and up was not solely in charge of raising sam even if he felt like that sometimes because a 4 year old cannot raise a child. john didn’t hand dean a baby and a gun and say figure it out i don’t care what you do. you might even register that once sam started being involved in hunts that john was an overbearing presence in his life and that is the very nature of their conflict in early seasons!

like you can talk about the ways that john winchester was a bad father to each of his sons differently without making things up wholesale idk. he’s not a black-and-white villain. if the cw’s supernatural says, like, anything, it’s that fathers are complicated. taking that away from john (and subsequently sam and dean) weakens the show overall dramatically
