we need to talk about the selfishness epidemic. sometimes called the chain of selfishness or selfishness cascade (by me). someone gets hurt so they have to focus on taking care of themselves for a while. that’s fine, makes sense. sometimes someone gets hurt very badly, or has been hurt continually for a long time, and they have to completely relearn how to live without putting others first to the extent that their own safety and happiness is compromised. also fair and makes sense. millions of people have been so hurt for so long that they develop an entire philosophy around putting themselves and their own comfort above others and others’ comfort. less cool. everyone encounters everyone else putting themselves first and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of always having to put yourself first because everyone else is putting themselves first. cascade. chain. cycle. it’s like we forgot why we live in societies. humans ARE animals but it’s like people in cars and supermarkets are operating under jungle survival instincts in regards to the trust and grace we extend to other people in our own fucking communities. just be fucking courteous, damn. imagine for a second that everyone around you is also a whole person

i think the most upsetting thing about american-flavor puritanism is how fucking patronizing it is. it's 2026 but the whole world still has to deal with a cultural hegemony grown from the gnarled vestiges of victorian-era paternalism. tax-paying adults with passports and the right to vote are treated like wayward children because of the antiquated idea that authorities must protect the weak minds of the unwashed masses from depravity and corruption. the average american can send a fellow citizen to the chair, but they can't piss in a ditch without being declared an outlaw. american entertainment media is saturated with sex, but you can't talk about it online without getting your account suspended. it's such blatant censorship at a universal scale, but because sexual content is framed as inherently dangerous, this restriction on basic adult autonomy, this blanket denial of moral and intellectual adulthood, can be reframed as protection, an expression of care, a moral duty. i think all the women through out history who were financially pushed into marriage and motherhood because they had no other options is sad and tragic too but socially something we will never be able to reckon with because we can’t come to terms with the fact some women don’t want to be mothers

we really are so condtioned to believe, deep down, all women want to be mothers (even if now we’re okay with women having careers too) like i really just think we should all question how news cycles about birth decline are aimed at us, when realistically there’s several reasons for it and one is absolutely women more and more are in positions where they don’t have be wives and mothers for economic reasons and you know what? that’s a good thing!
