I think so. I was hoping to play piano but, then again, there are so many amazing pianists here it’s kind of intimidating but, hey, that’s pretty cool. I’m sure you’ll do great

“Yeah I just... yeah. As for trying out, apparently not? They heard about me and they got into contact with my teachers and they wanted to give me a shot since, apparently, a teacher from Juilliard had seen me playing at the jazz club the last time I’d visited” He said, everything coming out in a rush as he smiled at the other “I mean... it was that one piece that I performed that night so, sure, if you want to hear it I don’t mind playing for you”

“Holy shit, seriously?” Charlotte asked, grinning at her friend. “Dude, that’s amazing!” She said, throwing her arms around him and hugging him “You have to let me take you out to celebrate, okay?” She had a feeling he’d try and protest, but she wasn’t letting him get away with that this time.

James laughed, giving Charlotte a gentle squeeze back as she hugged him, grinning back down at her as he moved his hand to show her the letter,

“It seems like it and, come on, if anyone should be taking anyone out, it should be me. Isn’t that what people do when they get great news? Take their friends out to celebrate?” He dimpled at her

“I don’t believe for one second that anyone would think you were only being nice for some kind of personal gain.” Charlotte said, shaking her head in disagreement. “Like I said, you’re far too nice. And anyway, girls like nice guys, so it would only end up working in your favour.” She reasoned with a smile.

“And how would you know who I want to kiss?” She teased, raising an eyebrow as she looked at him. “Like I said, you’re not keeping your title of loser on my watch, whether you like it or not.” She nodded defiantly. “You’ll change your mind by midnight, I’m certain.”

“The last time I almost dated a girl, she turned out to be the daughter of a prominent Irish gang leader. As far as being nice and lucking out with girls goes, I have a really bad streak” James pointed out with a small laugh, raising his brows at her next words.

“Well, to be fair, I don’t” He chuckled “But, alright, I feel like there’s no way I’m going to win this so I might as well just go along with it”

Blowing out a puff of breath, Maddie debated telling James to mind his own business. Truth was though, she did want to vent. “It’s just that, he’s acting the hero and housing some girl with issues up the wazoo while she gets back on her feet. Which fine, we all pick up strays but- He could have asked me my opinion or at least talked to me before just deciding. I mean sure we don’t live together yet but we are building a life together and I would have thought he’d talk to me about things like this. Is this going to be the rest of my life? Him just making decisions and me finding out after the fact?”

It wasn’t unusual for James to be the person people vented to. He was used to dealing with it and calming them down and just being a good listener at the end of it all which was why, when Madeline began, he didn’t say a word until she was finished.

“Did you try talking to your boyfriend about that fact calmly? People tend to respond better when they think it’s a general discussion” James said thoughtfully “Obviously you two love each other a lot and he’s probably thinking of a way to apologize to you so, when that comes along and it’s quieter, try talking to him then”

“I’m actually more fond of the lesser known areas. Central Park is nice, and I do enjoy the John Lennon memorial, but the crowds kind of kill it for me. Guess they’re better than Irish gangs though.” Smiling softly over at James, he tried to joke about the dangers of living in the Bronx, not sure if his new friends would appreciate it or not. 

He sighed with Jame’s insight on the situation, Gabe reaching up to rub the back of his neck awkwardly. “MIT was my dream, you know? I wouldn’t change the decision I made for anything in the world I just…I miss it.”

“True that I mean, sure some of the gangs are pretty chill and stuff when you know them and they’ll buy you a couple beers sometimes but it’d kind of daunting knowing that they could potentially murder you at any given moment if you get on their bad side” James laughed “You know, I almost dated the daughter of one of the biggest guys there. I actually really liked her but, when you’re pretty sure you might get killed if the two of you break up, it’s kind of... difficult to make things work”

James nodded in understanding because he did know even if things were slightly different for him. He’d wanted to study at Juilliard for piano but, at the insistence of his mother, he’d gone to King instead and was studying Business.

“Yeah... I wanted to go to Juilliard at first to study music but things back home were difficult and my mother wanted me to go into something that might help out the situation back home which is why, as much as I love piano, I don’t think I’ll have a huge chance to pursue it”

Rolling her eyes, Maddie let her first instinct take over, and she snapped at him. “I’m fine!” However, as the words left her lips, she knew it was unfair to take her frustrations on an innocent. “I’m fine.” She repeated, softer, her body language relaxing a little. “My boyfriend is just pissing me off. Yes, I know we will get over it, we always do, but he’s a stubborn ass and won’t admit when he’s wrong and there are times I want to throw things at him.” Realizing she sounded like she was in a completely unhealthy relationship, she added. “But we love each other,” with a shrug.

James didn’t mind people snapping at him. He figured she’d been having a rough day and didn’t take it to heart at all as he lowered the cover of the piano over the keys and rapped his fingers gently upon the mahogany,

“Well hey, what’s important is that you guys love each other” He said “Not doling out advice since I’m not the best at it- especially when it comes to love- but, if you want to vent, I don’t mind listening”

“I do not think so, but the plain lady would request your favourite song to play,” replied Ana with a small smile.  “Do you play all kinds of music, or only one?”

“My favorite huh... Have you heard of Liszt’s Rondo Fantastique before? It’s a bit lengthy and difficult but it’s pretty good” He said, stretching his fingers as he ghosted over the monochrome keys in a fluid and practiced fashion as he thought about the others’ question before smiling “I like diversifying my range so I play all kinds. Do you like anything particular?”
