A Special Surprise | Everlark
It had almost been 2 years since the end of the rebellion, 12 was almost entirely rebuilt with fresh faces moving into the district to start their quaint families. It was still a weird thing to Katniss, walking around the district like she had just a couple years ago. Now there weren’t people begging for food and starving on the streets, the children were able to play happily where ever they please. They no longer having to worry about that one day, every year where the entire district fell silent. The tension so thick you could cut it with a knife, the reaping, the Hunger Games. All of it over, people were now able to freely move between the districts and live where ever they please.
Katniss was pacing back and forth in the house that she and Peeta now shared. They had gotten married slightly over a year ago, the ceremony still enough to bring tears to her eyes. The boy with the bread who had saved her life was now her husband and the thought of living with out him since the Hunger Games, Quarter Quell, and the Rebellion was a thought she couldn’t even begin to think about. She had almost lost him once to the Capitol and after many months of fixing each other they were finally able to move on with their lives. That included beginning their family.
Peeta wanted children more than anything and Katniss knew that, deep down she wanted them as well but the trauma from her past haunted her and it was almost a trained response now to expect something to go terribly wrong. Peeta was always good at talking her out of her depressive moments reflecting on the past. She knew everything would be alright as long as she had Peeta in her life. So, that is what lead her to this moment now, pacing back and forth anxiously waiting for Peeta to get home from the bakery. She was now a month and a half late and getting sick every morning. She had been hiding the sickness from Peeta until she knew that she was 100% on the matter.
Two years after the rebellion against the capitol, everything was back to normal. They were still busy rebuilding their district since everything was bombed down by the capitol. They began to rebuild the houses first because people that surived the bombing were coming back to district twelve. Everyone that lived in the district now where free to go wherever they wanted, because the capitol wouldn’t stop them aymore.
After a year Peeta started a bakery. Close to the place the bakery from his parents used to stand. Peeta loved that he could bake again but he really missed his family - especially his younger brother. When they baked bread years ago, they always did it together. His mother wasn’t always nice to him, he still missed her. But after all what happened, he got someone new in his life, Katniss. Peeta loved her with his whole heart. She was the girl who saved him.
The day they married, was the most beautiful day in his life. At the ceremony he almost cried because he couldn’t believe he was marrying Katniss. He didn’t expect to marry her - ever. Because he didn’t knew Katniss really loved him. Everyone they cared about was on their wedding - even Gale and Buttercup. Peeta wanted children, but he wasn’t sure if Katniss wanted kids.
After a long day of working in the bakery, Peeta closed the door of the bakery and walked home. Peeta wanted to see Katniss again, to tell that he loved her and kiss her - he did that every day. When Peeta arrived home, he sat Katniss walking in the house. She seemed nervous. Was there something wrong? Peeta walked inside and looked at Katniss. Maybe there was nothing.
‘’Hey, I’m home.’’
Peeta said and walked towards her. He smiled and kissed her short on the lips.
‘’How was your day?’’
Katniss had spent the better part of the day going over how she was going to tell him. She knew that he would be excited, even though it wasn’t exactly her plan to become pregnant she wasn’t at all upset. She imagined how the scene would play out all day, she knew he would be happy regardless of how she told him. Katniss just wanted to make it somewhat special for him, since he had made so many moments special for her.
Peeta, had a funny way of showing when he was extremely happy. There were three specific occasions that she could pick out. The first being the day she admitted her feelings to him. The whole real and not real game they would play when Peeta was dealing with the Capitol’s torture. He had asked if she loved him and in that moment when she said real her entire life changed.
The second instance when she said yes to his proposal. Peeta had clearly spent so much time thinking about what to say to her when he dropped on one knee and presented the most beautiful ring that she had ever seen. Then the last instance was the actual wedding day, everything was over the top like most marriage ceremonies were. Except that day meant so much more to her because it marked the day that they were finally able to be free. The moment when she said “I do” changed her and she knew that everything would be okay.
Now she continued to pace back and forth, feeling her heart begin to pound as the clock ticked closer to the time he would normally arrive home. She glanced out the window and could see him approaching their home. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly when she heard his voice echo through the house.
Katniss greeted him at the door and kissed him back trying to play nonchalant.
“My day was just fine, I went out to the woods for a bit and just relaxed. I stopped by Haymitch’s to make sure that he was still breathing” she said jokingly “He’s apparently going to the Capitol to see Effie here in a few days” she smirked “They are really hitting it off- it is slightly unnerving” she said with a genuine smile. He was happy for Haymitch, he deserved to find love as well.
“Also I have something to tell you-” she trailed off
The boy smiled when he heard her day was alright. Because he had to make long days in the bakery, he couldn’t always spent much time with her. But he knew she could do things on her own - and he was happy about that. He still tried to spent all the time he had with Katniss because he loved to be around her.
‘’That’s good to hear.’’
This day had been fun so far. A lot of people came to the bakery for bread and other things. Probably because it was almost christmas. The people who lived in district twelve now where much nicer since it all ended. They didn’t had to worry about their healthy, their children and food. But still Peeta missed his family, and his friends. They all died.
Peeta wanted to say something, but Katniss was faster. When he heard she wanted to say something, he felt really curious. What did she want to tell him? But she trailed off. That’s why she was so nervous when he walked in.
‘’Tell me, if you want.’’
Peeta looked at Katniss and smiled. He was waiting for her to tell him, if she wanted.
Katniss looked at Peeta with a slightly nervous expression, she had been thinking about how to tell him for days now. Finally, the day she wants to tell him everything she gets nervous. It didn’t surprise her really but she wanted him to be surprised and not to be worried about why she’s nervous.
Katniss walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders and leaned her head against his. With a shaky deep breath in she pulled her head away.
“Peeta…” she said with a smile, the nerves leading more towards excitement but her voice still betraying her. She took a shaky breath in as she gently moved her hands to his own, then moved them slowly so that they were touching her stomach. She had just began to see the physical signs of her pregnancy, her stomach was slightly swollen, her face gaining weight, and other small things.
Her heart had began pounding when she moved his hands, this wasn’t the exact thing she had planned out but her words failed her, so she hoped that he would understand.
Peeta looked at her and smiled, still waiting for her to say something. There were so many ideas in his head about what she could possibly say. Maybe Katniss wanted to leave him? After they married, he was more sure about their relationship, but still he was sometimes insecure about them.
The blonde haired guy smiled when she wrapped her arms around him. It felt good - normal. Peeta smiled and wanted to wrap his arms around her waist. But she was faster and grabbed his hand. What was she going to do? When Katniss laid their hands on her stomach it all became clear. She was pregnant and that was want she wanted to tell him. A big smile appeared on his face and he was really happy. This was the thing Peeta really wanted - children. And now Katniss was pregnant with their first kid.
‘’You’re pregnant? That’s amazing news.’’
Peeta said, feeling really excited. His hand was still on her belly and he hold his hand in hers. After that he hugged her. He was so happy. He then kissed her full on the lips.
‘’Do you know how far along you are?’’

“She said around six-ish,”
‘’Alright, thank you. I’ll see you around six.’’ Peeta walked away and around six o’clock Katniss and he arrived at your house. Peeta knocked on the door.
“Mama, Daddy Peeta and Katniss are here.” Zara said with a bright smile smile as she went to open the door.
‘’Good evening.’’ Peeta said and smiled. He and Katniss then came in. ‘’You are looking beautiful tonight, Zara.’’

The blonde hair guy looked at her and a small smile appeared on his face. He was happy, everything was back to normal - almost. For him it felt like that. Of course a lot of things were different. His family was dead, their district was burned down to the ground, but they were back and people were rebuilding district twelve.
‘’I think we should head back home, it’s starting to get dark. Maybe I can make something to eat if we’re back.’’
Peeta said. They had been here for a long time - he didn’t knew how long. But he enjoyed the walk and wanted to make something to eat for Katniss. Peeta didn’t do that for a while. Maybe he could cook one of the animals Katniss catched today.
‘’Maybe I could cook the rabbit you catched today?’’
Peeta asked and smiled. He looked at her and waited for an answer.
“I would love that.” Katniss said, she didn’t shoot the rabbit for no reason. As they were on their way back home, Katniss was just enjoying this walk, it was just so quiet, and it was really something different. The brunette still need to get used to all of this to be honest.
Once they arrive home, she saw Effie outside of their house. Walking to the woman and hugs her tightly. God she had missed her so much actually. It was good to see Effie again, it had been some months actually. It was time to just invite the woman inside and just catch up. Walking inside the house, and went to the living room, with Effie.
Plumping down onto the couch and started talking, also just talking about what had been bothering her. It was just weird, and missing her mother and most of all she misses her sister.
‘’Great, I will cook him when we get back home.’’
The blonde haired guy said and smiled. He always loved to cook - and making bread. Then they started to head back and was suprised when they got back. Effie stood outside, in front of their house. It had been months since they had seen her.
‘’Effie, it’s great to see you.’’
Peeta said and a big smile appeared on his face. After Katniss huged her, he hugged her. Peeta followed them insdie and sat down on the other couch. For a few minutes he sat there and just listened. What could he say? What they have been up too? So when Effie asked how he was, he didn’t really know what to answer.
‘’I’m fine, more and more memories are coming back. The real ones.’’
Peeta smiled and then looked at Katniss. He was still happy that she was with him.

‘’Yeah. We don’t have to be scared for them anymore. We don’t have to be scared for the games anymore.’’
Peeta said and looked at Katniss. Yeah he really wanted to have children, but he could wait. He didn’t want to force it. He wasn’t even sure if they would marry. They said they love each other, but for how long? Peeta hoped it would last forever, but you never knew.
‘’Sorry for that last question.’’
Peeta said and then looked down. It was a stupid question. After the last thing he had said, he walked further. It was so quiet, peaceful. A while ago it was differently. Back then it was hell- everything was bombed down and a lot of people died here. Peeta was glad they were rebuilding district twelve.
‘’It’s good to see that they are rebuilding the district.’’
“We don’t, and I am so happy about that. You really have no idea, how happy I am that there are no games.”
It would suck, no parents has to suffer anymore, to see their kids get killed, get slaughtered. When he said that he was sorry, she smiled slightly. It was okay. Answering his questions was something she at least could do for him. Tilting her head to a side, while looking at him.
“Don’t be sorry about it Peeta, it’s okay.”
It was indeed good to see they were rebuilding the district. It was slowly coming back to life again. With some survivors of 12, coming back here. Or some new people, come to 12. Hoping on a better life here now. Or once she and Peeta have kids some day. And they could explain them what had happened. What their parents had been through.
The blonde hair guy looked at her and a small smile appeared on his face. He was happy, everything was back to normal - almost. For him it felt like that. Of course a lot of things were different. Peeta was happy with Katniss her answers - and the answers helped him with remembering the real memories. Someday he hoped all of his real memories were back.
‘’I’m glad that piece by piece my memories are coming back.’’
When he said that there was a little smile on his face. Katniss was right about not wanting to have children because of the hungergames. But gladly. everything was different. There were no more hungergames, no more children would die. Peeta would love to have children some day.
‘’Now that’s changed. How do you feel about that now?’’
Peeta asked curious. Maybe they would have children some day.. But it was too soon to think about that. Before he wanted kids, he wanted to get married first. Peeta looked at Kaniss and smiled.
“How I feel now, about having kids.”
Wow that question she didn’t expected to get from him. Like it was a huge deal for her, to want children but also not because of the games. Not the games or no longer an issue. She does want kids but not as badly as Peeta. That’s also the main reason that she wants it, just to make him happy and knowing she wants it too deep down.
“In the situation we are now, I am happy that if we have kids. We don’t have to be scared for them. That they don’t have to be in the situation as their parents. I would like to have kids.”
Katniss finally answered, it took a few minutes but she just had to think about it. The feeling that it might just come back, and that it all happens all over again. Okay it won’t happen again, ever. Everyone was in peace now. The Districts get along, they are helping on another of course.
