An underrated part of Heathers and its TV show is that both are satirizing popular teen media at the time. We all know about the movie and its notorious critique of John Hughes but the TV show is going full-on camp. It's taking shows like Riverdale and 13 Reasons Why to the point it's ridiculously hard to take seriously. If you've seen Insatiable, it's that type of camp but with things to say all the time about everything. As the crew said in a featurette, it's when one laughs that you can slip in your point.
30 y.o teenagers? That's the standard. Desperate attempts at being iconic? That's the standard. A musical number? That's the standard. The dodgy fashion? That's. The. Standard.
Why else would they have a dozen power super cool walks in one season? They're not stupid. They know it's ridiculous. They're taking the piss. It's notably reflected in J.D. Far from being a rebel, he's a straight-up psycho who does horrible, horrible things, is more than toxic, does not show much humanity at all. His tendency to monologue is joked about all the time. You're supposed to think "oh fuck, here he goes again" and that a lot of his points are terribly edgy and detached —privileged. His introduction is barely better than Jughead's "I'm a weirdo" rant. The writers took that archetype and put him in there without all the romantizing around him. Well, it's there but so bare bones and obvious that any sensible viewer wouldn't be tricked. He's used for far more than that but he's still meant to be a parody. It's the natural progression of what the original J.D. stood for because we never really let that cliché behind.
That's something that's missing from the musical. Instead of taking advantage of the new format or the medium, it became everything Heathers stood against. Say what you will about Peathers but at least it had the balls to say something, to look at the current culture and current entertainment and play with it. It got part of the essence of Heathers, even if one believes it failed at everything else.

The Heathers were both privileged and were also disadvantaged by their lack of freedom aka being women who had to put up with abuse by each other/ the guys to keep their popularity.
So actually making them minorities for the 2018 reboot wasn't as far from the original Heathers format as people think. Both are privileged due to class, but disadvantaged due to being minorities.
Their also not the villians, relatible every day girl Veronica sawyer was actually the villian. People just reconstructed Veronica as the herowine because of her not like other girls vibe. The musical didn't help with this but I do like how the 2018 version made it clear Veronica and JD are the villians.
Yes, the whole cast is mean because teenagers are mean but Veronica and JD are the only ones who feel justified in takeing others lives. They aren't justified and that's the point!
The 2018 reboot captured several of the 1980s Heather's themes such as alienation, toxic complicated friendships, adults not listening, fear driving teens to cruelty, and people useing suicide for fame/ stroking their own egos. They didn't always hit the mark with every issue they covered but to pretend they did nothing well. Just shows a lack of anaysis skills.
Also, I love the decostruction of JD who was a played with archetype of the 1980's bad boy steriotype by being the villian of the story. By pointing out JD is in fact a Heather. A wannabe hungry for fame and attention who pretends to be acting for some greater social cause. Who is driven to seek attention by his own personal pain.
I'll take that JD over the wobbied musical version who is killing for love. (rolls eyes).

Bizarre officially licensed 1989 children’s shoes that, despite being branded with “The Legend of Zelda”, feature a small illustration of Peach throwing an egg at a small blue creature from a flying carpet (top and middle).
The creature is actually obscure off-model artwork of Birdo from collectible Super Mario Bros. 2 scratch-off cards (bottom), recolored blue. Presumably, Birdo’s unusual appearance here is a result of the artist interpreting the character as a literal bird, including wing-like arms.

1987 Japanese print ad for Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the game that was later retooled into Super Mario Bros. 2 for international audiences. While the playable characters and friendly NPCs on the left page were all removed or replaced by Mario and his friends, this ad provides unique artwork of the enemies and bosses that are still present in Super Mario Bros. 2 on the right page.
