I mean the whole damn point of the Nativity story is that the supposed son of God (interpret Jesus how you fucking want, of course) was born to a couple of poor, exhausted peasants in the stable for the inn, and his first bed was a feeding trough for animals. That would nowadays be like a poor couple where the mother gives birth in a parking garage behind the motel because they couldn’t find a better place and nobody else would take them in. It’s a pretty gritty setting, and the idea is that God was reborn in some of the rock-bottom lowest circumstances. The only thing majestic was all the angels and shit, and of course motherly love

I get that a lot of the art portraying Madonna and Child as fabulously wealthy europeans in splendid robes and golden light was meant to glorify God + whichever nobility was sponsoring the artist, and while of course it’s genuinely beautiful art, it just always struck me as horribly missing the point, which is that the supposed son of God started in incredibly humble circumstances, among the kind of people that everyone else looks down on

‘Massacre des Innocents’ by Leon Cogniét, 1824. Although the Feast of the Holy Innocents is in a couple of days time, this painting is still really relevant in that it portrays Mary as how She really was: a scared refugee mum, so fearful that Her son was going to be one of the Innocents killed by King Herod.

I had to look at this like FIVE TIMES to register all the layers of symbolism going into the piece by Patterson.

I... have so many thoughts yet lack the words to articulate them. Let's give it a shot anyways.

I often fear becoming what this composition is describing. The individual who is clingy and emotionally dependent and too weak to do what is expected of her and any other adult human.

I try to be self aware about it. I know I struggle with emotional dependence. Years of friends leaving me for "being too much", for not understanding my autistic tendency to hyperfixate, they make me feel that eventually, everyone leaves. So every time I make a friend, I cling to them.

Hard.

Of course, this only overwhelms and drives them away. The cycle repeats and I am left to pick up the pieces of a broken heart.

Where this composition and I diverge, I feel, is in the day to day components. There is of course a fantasy in my and many girl's hearts of having a partner shower you in comfort by doing chores, working, etc. But that's all it should be - a fantasy. One that sounds good in dreams but fails to take into account the human cost of such a reality. I know that my autistic brain makes certain day to day tasks feel painful, frustrating. I know I am more likely to have a "bad day" over something most people might just brush off. But that's doesn't stop me from making the effort. From saying "you don't have to" and genuinely meaning it. Sometimes that means compromise. But even in the face of my legitimate mental struggles and actual disabilities, I refuse to dehumanize the people around me into some kind of emotional comfort blanket; tools to make the pain go away. Maybe it's just part of my personality to push through and find a way. Maybe it's my constant optimism that overrides my fear of being a burden.

But the behavior described in what I read is unacceptable - even if unintentional. You cannot hide behind femininity as an excuse to treat another human being like that.

Anyways... I ran outta gas for now. Main point is, if I'm understanding the piece correctly, I agree with what's being said and want to work to never emotionally take advantage of someone like that no matter what my legitimate disabilities are.

Every 'normal' adult is fussing around Pugsley and Wednesday because "poor children that must be so hard for you to see mom and dad break up like this"

But the kid are absolutely unfazed, arguing that "it's alright they will be together again soon". The normie are so sad for the "children clinging to vain hopes" until Morticia and Gomez get married again two weeks after the divorce.

In the meantime Mama and Uncle Fester fight about which one of them will go to whose custody.

They pretend to argue in court and at meeting with lawyers over the splitting of the properties but that's mostly Gomez insisting to leave more and more thing to his wife in an angry voice.

At home they decided not to talk to each other so Lurch has to (begrudgingly) transmit messages from one to the other, even when they are sat on either side of the table.

That works (more or less) then Morticia says one word in french and Gomez run to cover her with kisses until Morticia remind him that they are spliting (that's the only moment he seems to regret the whole thing)
