hello ive had a thought thats been rattling around my brain since i finished reading the song of achilles and its potentially controversial.
its that finnick odair is in a way an achilles variant.
at least in the way that i interpreted achilles and finnick in the time between his games and the quell, but not necessarily during the quell and mockingjay as we know him as canon. and while i know that finnick's cocky persona is largely all just an act for the capitol, i can't help but think that maybe it bled into his true personality even slightly. with achilles, he was treated as a god and told he was better than everyone by his mother (and basically everyone) for his entire life, who's to say finnick isn't a similar case? and while yes he's obviously treated horribly in the capitol, they see him as subhuman since he is at his core, district, but after being told that you are the best of the best, literally being compared to a god (*much like achilles*), at some point it goes to your head, even just a little bit. then, in mockingjay, he dies partly because of his own pride. while yes he wanted a hand in saving the country and his need to get revenge on snow for then life he could've had, for the life snow ruined, he also left his wife knowing the dangers, knowing he may not make it back.
and to further this thought, annie is his patroclus. someone he loved deeply, blindly even. someone that he would do anything to save, even knowing his own fate. and while almost nothing is known about their relationship canonically, if we go based off of my previous points, annie is the one to keep him grounded, much like how patroclus kept achilles human. patroclus would follow achilles into anything, always seeing the good in him, no matter how much bad he had committed. and while i'm not saying that any of the 'bad' that finnick committed was his fault, because it totally was not, annie would follow him through it all, even if if lead her to her death.
the codependent nature of achilles and patroclus' relationship could mirror (again not canon) a version of finnick and annie's relationship. it got to a point where one could not exist without the other, which is plausible considering the trauma bond finnick and annie likely shared. and while yes, in achilles and patroclus' case, one could not go on living without the other, the only thing that (potentially) was keeping annie living was her and finnicks son, the only living connection she has to him. and didn't patroclus wander the earth for years waiting to be reunited with achilles? who's to say this isn't annie's wandering as she raises their son?
or maybe im just making shit up at this point idk.
