I'm sorry this is probably a stupid question, but what actually is the difference between polygamy and polyamory? I've defined myself as poly for a while now but I've thought of the terms as synonyms.

PolyGAMY is the practice of marrying multiple spouses. simple enough. But it’s illegal, thus one of the ways people like ourselves are discriminated against. We can’t marry the people we love. You have to be married to multiple people at the same time in order to be polygamist 

But polygamy has a veerrrryyy long history of abusing women and children. Most forms of polygamy was one man having multiple wives. And sadly that’s how most people see it these days. Even though this practice is not really as common anymore. And it’s really terrible that when someone says they are polyam, most (99%) of the mono population will be like “oh my god you religious freak that’s a cult and that illegal you’re a weirdo” . 

PolyAMORY is the fact or practice of being romantically and/or sexually involved with more than one person with the knowledge and consent of all parties. It’s about relationships and love . Also note that you don’t have to be dating more than one person at a time in order to be polyamorous. Think of it like being bi, you are still bi even if you’re only dating one gender 

Polygamy and polyamory are not synonymous and are not interchangeable.

i know a lot of people struggle with this (myself included) so just a quick reminder to everyone that it is ok to ask for help, you don’t have to deal with everything by yourself, there are always people who will help you. you don’t have to keep all of your struggles a secret, sometimes telling someone can help quite a lot too. 💜💕
