HEADCANON 002: HIGH SCHOOL POPULARITY

sam was never a hugely popular girl in school. even among her friend group she’d get teased for her beliefs (particularly veganism and her interest in protecting wildlife). however, she knew that her friends often meant no true harm to her, so she didn’t mind it and learned to differentiate that they were laughing WITH her not AT her. she’s naturally a strong person, and she’s very secure about herself and who she is and what she believes in. despite being bullied in her earlier life and then sometimes being teased (though not to the extent of being outcast or bullied specifically) in high school, she’s still remains kind and considerate to others. in fact, it only emphasises the reminder that you can never truly know how a person feels and how they are reacting to what you say to them deep down, and it has helped her become the understanding person she is. 

that being said, it didn’t mean there wasn’t people interested in being her friend (or love interest). especially during her stint as a cheerleader, her popularity went up and suddenly there were people who would have otherwise never looked her way, noticing her and trying to talk to her. she appreciated it all, but she always prioritized hannah and beth as her closest friends above all. and, unsurprisingly, many of those “friends” lost interest in her when she was kicked from the cheerleading team. 

in the end, after having a taste of what it was like to be “popular”, she preferred staying out of the limelight unless it was for the right reasons. sam very much dislikes being betrayed, including the feeling that someone is not being genuine to her, such as the fake friends that being popular brings. it’s something she prefers not to deal with, and she really doesn’t know how emily and jessica can do it. in that aspect, she empathizes with em and jess, knowing it doesn’t feel good to be questioning who actually cares for you and who is just pretending.
