“Try being a little grateful.” Caretaker tilted their head at Whumpee, always so cool and reasonable. “I didn’t exactly volunteer to take you in.”

“I know that,” Whumpee whispered, close to tears. “And I am grateful.”

Did they want them to atone? Sometimes, in rare form, Whumper had wanted them repentant and fawning.

“I’m sorry,” they ventured, watching for even the slightest reaction from Caretaker. “I know I’m imposing. And you’ve been so generous to me. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness, I—”

Caretaker held up a hand and Whumpee nearly bit their tongue in their hurry to fall silent.

“Alright, alright,” they grimaced. “Don’t be so fucking weird.”

Whumpee’s face burned. They nodded sharply. Understood. Caretaker’s mouth lifted at the corner, trying and failing to hide their enjoyment of Whumpee’s discomfort.

“Let’s try this again,” they said, picking up the vile tasting medicine they swore would help. “Think you can keep it down this time? It wasn’t cheap.”

A whumpee who was captured and tortured by being deprived of sleep. When they're finally rescued by Caretaker, they refuse to sleep because of the punishments Whumper threatened them with. Whumpee has gone without sleep for so long that they're hardly able to understand anything Caretaker says, eyes are glazed over, as if watching something only they can see. Caretaker has to pin them to the bed, Whumpee's frail limbs trembling as they weakly attempt to fight back, so that they can slip a needle into a vein in Whumpee's arm. As Whumpee's eyes finally drift shut, Caretaker feels calm knowing their friend's body can finally get the rest it needs.
