“Samuel– You don’t have to repay me. You don’t have to do anything other than what you’re doing already. Your company is all I could possibly ask for.” She gave him a smile as she turned to start preparing more balls of dough for the next cookie sheet.
Claire didn’t like the idea of him thinking he owed her. She didn’t want there to be any pressure or obligation between them, only their companionship. But she did want to keep the mood light, so she gave a laugh, nudging Samuel as she passed by him. “Unless you happen to be any good with history. These gen-ed requirements are killing me.”
It was almost as if a giant weight had been lifted from off his chest. For so long, he had been stuck in the frame of mind to always return payment, to never leave a debt. Being in Claire's presence was all he wanted. She was a comfort to his weary soul. She was a light in his perpetual darkness.
He grinned at her when she nudged him, his stare following after her as she passed him by. There was no pressure here. All she asked was for him to stay. That was the least he could do. And, to be honest, it was the one and only thing he wanted to do.
"I will try my best," he said with a chuckle. "I must admit that I am not the best at history though. You cannot rely on my limited knowledge. Which point in history are you at now? I’ll do what I can.”
