Do you ever feel like it was easier being a kpop fan back in the day? I don't necessarily mean 10 or 15 years ago.. even 5 years ago, I find it was less hectic and more about music than streams and what not. Seriously, I get so anxious after seeing twitter threads and ig posts. It is all about streams, views, wins, sales etc. Not to say that wasn't a deal before - it was and always will be, but social media engagement just amplifies this to a level where, as a kpop fan, I feel anxious and nervous every time my favorite group or soloist makes a comeback. Cancel culture, debates on who is better, solo stans within the same fandom, popularity comparisons, companies being sh*tty and all this has always been tiring. Honestly, I just want to enjoy the music, MVs and performances and share that with people, but it has gotten really tough. I mean y'all telling me I cannot like other groups/soloists and that is betrayal? The hell is up with that??
I don't know. It could be me. I am not trying to say kpop was better and unproblematic before and all that, but it was somewhat easier. Toxic stans and haters are the cherry on top and I feel like I'm too tired for all this 😂
If you don't wanna support your faves' work and just be a casual listener instead of a stan go ahead. No one is forcing you to but you gotta understand that if fans don't stream & buy albums then your fav can go nowhere and lack of popularity leads to disbandment. So many artists express their dream to win daesangs, top itune charts, sell millions of albums and perform for big and bigger audiences. Fans try to make these dreams come true, try to make the artists happy.
But I think this attitude right here is what OP is talking about. OP isn’t saying don’t stream, don’t buy albums, just that some stans take it so seriously that it ruins the enjoyment of it. And I totally feel this, I had to take a step back from kpop because some stans just take it way too seriously with fandom wars and trashing other groups/soloists that they don’t like. When I got into kpop like 6/7 years ago, stuff like that really wasn’t prevalent.
In your reply you imply that it is our fault if our faves disband or quit if they don’t get enough streams. That’s just so untrue. It’s on the companies that create and promote these groups to keep them afloat. I totally understand that streams and sales and fans promoting groups do help them, but at the end of the day if they don’t do well, that’s not the fans’ fault, that’s their companies mismanaging them. Think of Pristin. They had a pretty large fan base and a successful debut but Pledis didn’t promote them or give them comebacks and then decided to disband then. That’s not on fans.
Feeling this responsible for a group’s success is just not enjoyable for most people and it’s toxic. We really should not have that type of responsibility on us and I think spreading around that message is just hurtful. It implies that some of us who aren’t constantly streaming and promoting are lesser fans and that’s just not true. People can enjoy things in lots of different ways and that’s valid (as long as the way you enjoy it is safe and kind to yourself and others)! If the way you decide to enjoy kpop is by promoting, voting, and streaming then that’s great! I enjoy and support my faves in a different way and that’s okay too!
The first post, the first sentence on my dash this morning was “Yongguk left TS” and honestly? My first thought was “he’s free”.
He’s not leaving his members, that’s not what this is about. It’s about Yongguk escaping abuse and mistreatment. Let’s not sugar coat this. I will never forgive TS for all the shit they’ve put their artists and employees through. I honestly couldn’t be happier that Yongguk is free from them, once for all. He’s jumping a sinking ship, and I’m convinced the other members will follow, one by one, as their separate contracts expire, too. Yongguk just had to be first.
This is not a loss. This is a victory.

*(until the next member also bounces as soon as he possibly can)
Even though I knew it was coming, as most of us did, I’m still in mixed emotions about Yongguk leaving. I’m sad because it’ll change the group completely if they do all stay with the company, but I’m glad because he needs this for his own health and his health comes first in his life. It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but I do hope we still get new music from him and B.A.P. I know this isn’t gonna be an easy time - for us or B.A.P themselves, but this is the best decision in the situation given. Good luck to Yongguk in his endeavours and to the rest of B.A.P going forward.
