hey remember when mike's only way of telling el he loves her without will rubbing his back and calling him pet names while he says it, was canonically:

"blank makes you crazy, you know, like, the word....like, old people say it sometimes...."

and then el gets confused (rightfully so) and she's like "old people?" and then he starts yapping about things that makes him feel "the word" and el is like "girlfriends?" and he's like "no"

and then she says "boyfriends." and she NODS her head because it's not even a question and she looks so accomplished like she figured out what he was trying to say, and mike's eyes widen and he starts shaking his head rapidly and says "NO"

and el probably meant she feels that way about her boyfriend but mike totally took it the wrong way by his face

i have never seen fear like that in the eyes of mike wheeler

little wiw making drawings for his friends in kindergarten and mike always bragging that he has more drawings than lucas but that's just bc he keeps every doodle Will has ever done, even the ones that weren't actually made for him, he just sees will drawing something and goes "can I have it? :D"

Too embarrassed to say this with my real account in fears of people thinking I’m wrong, and while it doesn’t excuse the poor writing, I think there could be another way to read the Will-Henry scene especially with TFS.

Will and Henry were always meant to parallel each other, especially with their relationships to both father figures and the Mind Flayer, but I’ll only be focusing on the latter. Henry and Will were both vulnerable children who were faced with a great evil that stole their autonomy away from them. Neither were powerful enough or able to turn it away and keep it out, but only one managed to be freed from it and the reason why is important.

It’s no secret to anyone who has seen TFS that Henry’s family wasn’t very good or helpful in the way they should’ve been. Nobody in his family truly seemed to care or believe in the good inside Henry. Nobody really did until Patty. Henry only truly succumbed when he was withdrawn from someone who believed in him. When he’s away with Brenner and is being exploited and abused further that is when he is forced to accept and submit to the Mind Flayer. Even despite being at his lowest and most consumed, Patty coming through to connect with him to let him know she still believed in the good within him allowed Henry to break through and make his way back to her. Unfortunately at the play he believes to have killed Patty and is returned to the lab finally becoming One with the Mind Flayer.

Now let’s compare briefly with Will’s experience:

Will is possessed on the field, surrounded by friends and his mother who would move mountains for him.

All of the people closest to him are there the whole time he’s possessed and are desperate to help him.

Despite the danger he poses to his loved ones, they never give up on him.

He is never fully possessed due to the love he is shown and is able to give them information to save his loved ones.

Said mother who would move mountains refuses to give up on setting her son free and does accomplish this.

The differences between their experiences is glaringly obvious. Will receiving even a glimpse into what took place for Henry would allow him to see how different things could have been had Henry been surrounded by people who loved him and believed in him. Let’s even assume Will knew about Patty. He could’ve seen this young girl see the good inside of Henry and overlook the danger and, as a result, Henry was able to take some control. Maybe Will thought even one person could have had a positive effect and the ability to help Henry save himself and overtake the monster that kept him trapped for so long. Two boys who were taken hostage, one reaching out to the other and trying to free him as well. Though it doesn’t work and doesn’t excuse the pisspoor writing, I do think that was the intent.

this is a beautiful analysis anon and i wholly agree. i wish el had split up from max & kali at some point so we could have this scene with her, henry and will. both of them try to get to his humanity and in the end different sides of their arguments win. but whatever

Just made this post and looking at the gifs I can see the whole point. "makeout" versus "date":

Mike and El are never really given screen time to just...enjoy each other's company. Talk. They kiss and they do activities. Sometimes they say two sentences like "I like the new look by the way it's cool" "thanks" "my [milkshake]'s better" "no it isn't" "do I look cool you're giggling because i look really cool". All nice and cute in passing, but they never just sit in a sweet conversation and enjoy an exchange. They talk emotionally or they kiss. But I don't know what they'd look like without relationship issues and without a war.

I REALIZED WHAT IT IS.

MIKE AND EL DON'T HAVE BANTER. They don't have a "dynamic".

I was ITCHING for what it was for YEARS OH MY GOD.

They interact and it's nice but it's missing something that romances have and I never knew. It's BANTER. There is not volley, no back and forth.

"You're such a dork. I thought you were like one of the cool kids now" "I'm not cool?"

"Which is weirder, me or the bear traps?" "You. Definitely you."

"You should come work for me" "And have to look at your face all day? No thank you"

Hell! Even "You almost shot me with that one" "You almost deserved it" - the time they're trying to portray actual build up.

They all have it. Always. THAT'S what makes them feel like just regular teenagers dating in a boring way instead of characters in a love story. They don't have the back and forth banter. They talk about stuff and sometimes they joke. But it's missing that.

"I was being a total self-pitying idiot" "I didn't say it" "You didn't have to"

"I like the new look by the way it's cool" "thanks"

"You're gonna have an awesome scar" "Bitchin'" "Yeah, bitchin"

"My [milkshake]'s better" "No it isn't!" <- maybe the closest we've got??

"Do I look cool? You're giggling because I look awesome, right?"

And that is EVERY ONE I CAN THINK OF.

To be generous, I'll loop in season five too:

"You're saying I'm evil and hell-bent on destroying the world?" "Totally. No!"

vs

"Do you think that's possible for us?" "I mean not the three waterfalls part, but yeah"

They're all cute. Nice. Conversational, normal, complimentary, understanding, lighthearted. But they aren't banter. They're just...talking.

They write them to talk the way they write friends to talk on this show. It's not the same. They don't. banter. They don't flirt. THAT'S really what it is. They're nice to each other and want to kiss, yay they should date........but they don't flirt. And it just makes feel...that much off. Just a little bit. You can feel it missing.

They support each other and they understand each other and they make each other laugh and they love each other. But they don't flirt. They don't have banter. They don't have a dynamic I can picture in a home. Their home.

That's huge for what people often call lack of "chemistry". They can seem as comfortable as they want and close and natural or whatever, but it's not just up to the actors. Sometimes romantic chemistry hasn't been written.

"You mean someone like...Scott Clarke?"

"You're gonna be home by eight listening to The Talking Heads and reading Vonnegut or something" "sounds like a nice night"

"Mike" "yeah?" "I understand".......

I can't picture "You are such a dork <3" from Max to Dustin. I can't picture "You're saying I'm evil and hell-bent on destroying the world?" from Will to Lucas. I can't picture "What's weirder, me or the bear-traps?" from Jonathan to Argyle.

I can picture "I like the new look, by the way, it's cool" for quite a few pairs. Pairs that love each other, pairs I like. But plenty of non-romantic pairs.

The only other couple I can think of that did this like this is Joyce and Bob.

They seem like couples you meet. Not couples you invest in. Not couples you live through while you watch. You met them at a party once and they seemed nice. And that's what you can say for them.

I always thought I rooted for them like little siblings, from this outside perspective, and not the others, because they were the younger ones. But now we've had Lumax, we've had Byler. And I'm seeing that wasn't why.

They're friends. You can deliver the lines however you want and the stage directions can say that they kiss. But their dialogue is written as friends.
