The Duffers went out of their way to state that Nancy's relationship with Steve was her own version of forced conformity, that the characters were regressing in season 4, that she still associates Barb's death with her romantic relationship with Steve, that she doesn't want to settle down and have six little nuggets, that she wants a career and that she wants to be with Jonathan because she's in love with him... but we have to keep reading about Nancy being a prize for Steve's redeemed jock's arc.
