The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler doesn't hit like The Vanishing of Will Byers because Holly doesn't vanish. We see her all season, a disproportionatly large amount at that compared to the long-standing main characters. Will's kidnapping in s1 hits because he's haunting the narrative, an absent force driving the characters to action. There's no horror or suspense to Holly’s vanishing, instead, she's just another character. And it kills me because they were trying to do s1 nostalgia without actually applying the tone and tropes that were the foundation of that season.

i was thinking about how mike had to grow up really fast and how he was sort of a parentified son who took care of holly and was asking how her breakfast was at the age of thirteen while her biological father didn’t even know how old she was, and then continued on to emotionally support her and stuff to the point that she thought he was a grown man who never got scared when he was only just turning sixteen

and then i realized that will and mike were totally acting like girldads to holly when they were living together and i think that’s adorable

someone once said that most people who don't believe in/like byler do so because they see gay people as a teenage fetish, a whim of "little girls who only want to see that"

and because of that, they can't see lgbtq relationships as something real, solid, valid, and true, and only see them as a fetish

and that's a serious—and horrible—problem
