I don't mean to hijack the post or anything, but this is reminding me: with the release of the Michael Jackson film, I've been discussing with a friend how much Stranger Things fumbled by not including MJ (beyond, like...one song, which wasn't even one of his songs, it was a cover. I guess they also used Thriller in the Season 2 trailer but that was more promotional than anything else). They don't name drop him even once.

One of the biggest musical icons, and the show was taking place during the height of his fame, and nothing.

It ticked me off at first, but now I'm actually kind of glad.

Also, why tf was Steve coaching middle school baseball when school was out? Graduation typically happens after all school activities are complete. Which means the spring sports season should have ended by the time Robin is giving the voiceover. Unless the school year for the middle school is a lot longer than the school year for the high school, which seems odd to me.

More blabbing about the epilogue generally under the cut.

It's true that the more you look at s5, the more nonsensical it seems, particularly the epilogue. The characters are all wrapped up in extremely shallow ways. And Eleven kind of gets framed as the dark thing that Hawkins always needed to get past in order to improve (Mike is unable to join the rest of bright, sunny Hawkins at the graduation until he moves on; Hopper is framed as more able to move forward with his life now that two of his daughters are dead, which is weird af - like he just got used to losing kids or something). In fact, that's the darkest part of it all, the way that Eleven is reduced to a myth, something that has to be "believed in" or else she doesn't exist. On a show that has always been so obsessed with trauma, an ending that seems to try to erase all traces of lasting trauma from 5 seasons of death and destruction is weird. And you can kind of see the cracks. Steve is putting on a brave face, but he doesn't seem happy with all of his friends gone (except Dustin). Max is frustrated (and breaking things). Will's art isn't a focus of his new life at school. Vickie doesn't exist. Mike's life is without color. Like...even if you don't believe in cg, you have to know that the ending doesn't really work for the series on a number of levels. Stranger Things is about lasting impacts of hard times and how those shape our lives. An ending where grief and hurt are ignored/buried and a kind of false contentedness is emphasized, doesn't really make sense.
