“I figured we could just spread them around.  People get weirdly possessive of things if you give them to them.”  The last thing they need right now is people fighting over candles.  There’s not much worse than a flood, but River figures that a place being on fire on the inside with a flood on the outside will manage to cross that line into “even worse.”

Taking some of the candles, River spreads them around the cafe, lighting them as they go, and then they wander back over to Masozi.  Why? Because their ass is hella gay and Masozi is hella cute.

“Hell of a place to be stuck during a storm, huh?”

Masozi nodded, “yeah, you’re right, good idea.” She took a box of matches and lit the candles, placing them around the cafe, she wondered if anyone had fire powers, they’d be useful right now.

She turned around at the sound of River’s voice, “yeah, but at least I have you to keep me company,” she said with a smile, she really hoped that River understood that she was flirting rather than just being nice, it sucks when that happened.

River is thrown off by the compliment.  It kind of comes out of nowhere, in the middle of what should probably be a serious situation, so River just stands there, dumbly, for a few seconds before clearing their throat.

“River.  Hi.  Thanks.  I’ll grab a lighter for those.”

Masozi laughs to herself at River’s reaction, she thought it was cute that she got all flustered. Once she got into the kitchen she didn’t actually know where to look. Someone came through what was presumably the back door, the smell of damp cigarettes wafting in with them. They challenged why Masozi was here and handed her the candles after she explained what was happening.

Walking out of the kitchen, she found River. “Here’s the candles. Are we handing them out or placing them around the room?” she asked with a smile.

can we take a moment to just think about how incredibly scary magical healing is in-context?

You get your insides ripped open but your friend waves his hands and your flesh just pulls back together, agony and evisceration pulling back to a ‘kinda hurts’ level of pain and you’re physically whole, with the 100% expectation that you’ll get back up and keep fighting whatever it was that struck you down the first time.

You break your arm after falling somewhere and after you’re healed instead of looking for ‘another way around’ everybody just looks at you and goes “okay try again”.

You’ve been fighting for hours, you’re hungry, thirsty, bleeding, crying from exhaustion, and a hand-wave happens and only two of those things go away. you’re still hungry, you’re still weak from thirst, but the handwave means you have ‘no excuse’ to stop.

You act out aggressively maybe punch a wall or gnash your teeth or hit your head on something and it’s hand-waved because it’s ‘such a small injury you probably can’t even feel it anymore’ but the point was that you felt it at all?

Your pain literally means nothing because as long as you’re not bleeding you’re not injured, right? Here drink this potion and who cares about the emotional exhaustion of that butchered village, why are you so reserved in camp don’t you think it’s fun retelling that time you fell through a burning building and with a hand-wave you got back up again and ran out with those two kids and their dog? 

Older warriors who get a shiver around magic-users not because of the whole ‘fireball’ thing but the ‘I don’t know what a normal pain tolerance is anymore’ effect of too much healing. Permanent paralysis and loss of sensation in limbs is pretty much a given in the later years of any fighter’s life. Did I have a stroke or did the mage just heal too hard and now this side of my face doesn’t work? No i’m not dead from the dragon’s claws but I can’t even bend my torso anymore because of how the scar tissue grew out of me like a vine.

Magical healing is great and keeps casualties down.

But man.

That stuff is scary.

Ok this post is basically about battlefield healing, which is healing that happens very fast with the intent of keeping the warrior alive and able to defend themselves. Now, normally during wound healing, a LOT of different things happen—dead tissue and foreign substances being removed and digested by white blood cells, the various types of skin/nerve/blood vessel/etc cells that were previously there growing back in the right place and the right order, connective tissue being lain down to hold everything together. 

Now pretend you’re a magical healer and someone plops an actively dying dude down in front of you. His guts have been ripped open and blood is fountaining out of him. Are you going to worry about making sure the nerves grow back right? Or the foreign particles get cleaned up? NOPE! You’re going to worry about all the blood gushing out onto the ground! 

So you stick the guy back together as fast as possible. And you do that with scar tissue.

Scar tissue holds stuff together. Your body makes it when it doesn’t have the resources or ability to replace the tissue that was previously there in a timely manner or at all. It’s made of relatively few cells (i.e. the bits that are alive and have mitochondria and a nucleus and all that shit) and a whole bunch of proteins (i.e. a bunch of well-arranged gunk). I’m gonna assume that that makes scar tissue easier for mages to handle than other tissue that’s more cellular and thus more complicated. 

All right, so you’ve lain down a bunch of scar tissue. His guts don’t have holes in them anymore! His blood is staying inside its vessels! (Maybe you can even replace some of his blood to give him an extra boost!) Here’s the thing…you know how your intestines are supposed to absorb nutrients from your food? Scar tissue can’t absorb nutrients. It also can’t contract to push food down your intestinal tract. Oh—and it might even form cross-bridges to other parts of the intestine or the abdominal wall, which is not only painful but can cause an intestinal blockage. 

Yeah, the guy’s not bleeding anymore. But he’s going to have Problems.

Nerves are especially shitty at growing back, btw. Combine that with scar tissue physically blocking the path the nerve needs to take to reconnect and that’s a good recipe for motor and sensory loss. Muscles and skin, too, lose strength and elasticity when they scar. 

If you find a skilled healer afterwards, though, they might be able to destroy the scar tissue and get you started with some actual tissue regeneration. So there’s that.
