Why Teddy Roosevelt oughtn’t be your favorite president takes four hours to explain.
Sympathy for that Norwegian Devil
Mius.
He might have known.
The suspicion had been there, of course; very few Fae knew Loki personally, and even fewer would go out of their way to send a mortal into his path. Mius may, in fact, be the only one among them whom the Trickster could name.
But it is good to have his suspicions confirmed. And whatever his thoughts on the matter are, he keeps them concealed behind the same neutral mask he has been consistently wearing, and lowers the dagger even further in a display of good faith.
Mius is a friend… and any friend of his, while not im- mediately deserving of trust, should at least be afforded the benefit of the doubt.
“Mius is…” he presses his lips together, sighs, and twiddles his dagger idly, as though searching for some- thing to do with his hands.
“Hm.”
“You are wise not to trust him, Aiakides… for the Fae are by nature capricious, and though Mius is something of a pariah among his kind, he is still subject to his nature. He is dangerous, as you mentioned – mercurial, volatile…”
He swallows and drops his gaze, and the dagger fades from his hand in a haze of green and gold magic. The god watches it go, clenches his empty fist even tighter, and folds his arms across his chest.
“…And in my long life I have rarely had a truer friend.”
Kaisar put his hands together at his chest, and lowered his chin to his knuckles, and slowly, turned himself with a ponderous pace off towards the sea. He saw in the glittering sunlight catching the crests of the rolling waters some glimmer of memory, sparking deep in the recesses of his mind. A steadfast memory was a blessing and a curse sometimes. The only real difference between a a pleasant and painful memory now tends to be proximity. It was a mad day, but not too different from this one. How could he have known the choices made that day would change his life forever?
He crouches at the edge of the pier. “Once, I’d have said the same thing about him... And I don’t mean to make that sound like a warning, or anything. Because, it’s... Really my fault that things are different now.” he confesses, as he gazes down to the water lapping at the wooden posts that hold the pier above the sea. “But once, a long, long time ago, it all fit together.” he says.
“The hardest thing is knowing that. That it didn’t have to wind up like this if not for me. That I was ultimately the one who smashed it all apart. To know that the pieces fit together, but no matter how hard you try you can’t figure out how to glue them back together.”
“If there’s one thing I wish, it’s to have one last chance to prove I’ve something worthwhile to give. That I can be a worthwhile friend. And not just to Mius, but... A lot of people.” he says, shutting his eyes...
“And I hope that, when he came to me and gave me this;,” he pauses there, to raise his right hand up to expose plain to the eye, the thick red scar that pierces the center of his palm, straight through to the back, “That he was trying, in his way, to push me along that road.”
The Plea
Kichuna turns her attention away to take out a bottle of disinfectant. Rubber glove slips over a paw, and she goes about cleaning nearby countertops. “Everyone wants to be understood. Don’t mean people will agree with what they’re understandin’.” There’s the quick hiss of sprayed disinfectant.
“Fuck, can y’even say you understand yourself?” She looks over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow. “Can’t control yourself, can’t say you understand yourself much at all.”
“I’m a monster, Kaisar – that’s what they’re calling you, right?” She takes up a hooked little tool to look over. “I like inflicting pain. I like the look of terror people give. I love seeing them struggle, seeing them weak.” She turns her eyes back on him. “Seeing them regret their life decisions. Heh.”
She dips the tool in a solution, and stirs it around. “… I sure as fuck understand myself, and I understand how I can fit in this giant fuckin’ mess of space. I don’t whine about it not fittin’ me.”
“You miss home? Home don’t fuckin’ exist any more.” The tool is set aside on a tray, and a new one is taken up to clean. “You’re after a dead fuck of a husk. Nostalgia goggles got you fuckin’ blind.”
“What is it even about home that y’want?”
Kai took a deep breath at that point, and he pressed his hand back into the mattress to lift himself upright, and bent over is middle. He rested his arms across his lap. “You’re wrong.” he says, as he gives her a straight on look.
“You’re not a monster, and neither am I. Because no one is just the sum of their worst moments, or their worst traits. There is good in you that exists alongside that, and that is what makes you...” He pauses, and twists his eye sidelong a moment, “Well, not human, obviously... But not a monster.” he says.
He plants his hand on his chest. “And there is still good in me. I’m not a monster. That’s all I’m trying to say. I made mistakes. A lot of them. Fault me for them, punish me for them. But don’t label me less than human for them.” he says, bowing his head.
“And home is not a place, Kichuna. Home is an idea. What do I miss about it? I miss someone believing in me.”
The Plea
Kichuna watches him, expression unchanging. Her ears swivel as the stranger begins his tale. A tale of violence and bad decisions and impulses. “A long time, huh.” Replied, flatly. Her expression doesn’t even flinch at the graphic description. At most, she seems thoughtful.
When he does reach for her though, she cringes in disgust, and steps just out of reach. At his plea, she breathes a sigh. “Everyone’s fucking crazy, you ignorant asshole.” She uses the back of her hand to push his own outreaching hand aside. Not forcefully, simply as a tired owner presses aside an insistent pet.
“I don’t know what shit you’ve gotten into. It’s some pretty serious shit, sounds like. Violent tendencies, irrationality, tch, you’re a case of needin’ some straight up pills. That’s one area I can’t provide help to. Not professionally, anyway – and I try not to supply to my own patients.” She steps away, mindful of keeping him within her sights, as she goes about to put away a few stray items.
“… Besides.” She speaks up, “Say I did believe you weren’t fucked up in the head.”
She turns around, electric-blue feline eyes locking on his face. “What’s that gonna do fer ya? Make you feel better fer yer crimes?” A faint, raspy chuckle. “I ain’t judgin’.”
“I’m no stranger t'violence. I’m wonderin’ what you’re trying to get outta this.”
That... Was a good point, actually. His hand goes down to tuck to his side, when she shoves it away, but the other comes up to rest on his forehead, while he shuts his eye, and tilts his head back as far as his mattress will let it. “Comfort.” he says, “I guess.”
He gulps down quietly then. “No, not comfort.” he says as he curls his fingers against his skin. He rolls his head over, and peeks his eye out from under his hand, “To be understood. That’s all I really want. To be understood.” he says.
His face aches. The stitches he certainly needed, from his brow down to his hip, all burned fiercely, as the drugs slowly worked their way out of his system via his kidneys and liver. He bore this without complaint though, it was the other, longer pain, the persistent venom in his veins that he could never flush away, that had him shaking there in the hospital bed like a leaf in the wind.
There remains things caught in his throat. Requests not made, things unsaid. Things that are probably better left that way. All that he manages to get out is, “I miss home, Kichuna.”
The Plea
Kichuna lifts up her head at the noise. Voice, rather. A slip of paper falls into the book, saving her page as she closes it shut. “Yeah, sure.”
She slips out of her chair with a simple motion. She offers no words, no extra conversation as she goes about to first righten up Kaisar’s bed with a crank, ensuring that once he gets his water, he doesn’t choke on the damn thing and die. A tray is obtained, a glass is filled, she even dons the thing with a straw, gracious host as she is. She places it nearby, within his reach – or even just a tilt of his head.
“Couldn’t do much about saving your eye. Sorry.” She states, with the same monotone she always has. “You’d have to talk to Tiran for a prosthetic, or find someone willing to form you a new one. Magical healing is beyond me and my clinic, right now.” She takes a moment to look Kaisar over, ensuring the quality of her care is holding up. “Whatever you did…”
“Really fucked you up. As far as I’ll pretend, I’ll say you fell face first through a fucking window, twice.”
Kaisar struggled to get himself seated up when the bed cranked, and fell back into it once it was up. He reaches up after a while, to touch the bandages packed in over his empty eye socket. Well, she answered his second question before it left his lips. With a shaking hand, he took the glass of water, and drew it to his chest. He felt he owed an explanation...
“Tiran was right.” he mumbles after sipping down a gulp of water.
“Took on a whole bar at once... Two actually, one for each fist... Had to make it fair, after all..” he says, before sealing his lips around the straw, and sucking more water down. He trembles with a chill, as he sets the glass back down on the table.
“No... Dumbass college kids, dunk as fuck. Harassing homeless people on the street. Was walking by, guess I looked like a target. Threw a bottle at my head... And I just lost control. I... I’ve been a wreck for a long time, Kichuna.” he says softly. “It all just spilled over at once and... I wanted to kill that fucker. Bad.” His voice is a breathy whisper then, as he lets his head fall back, and again he reaches up to touch at the wages of his sin.
“I beat him into a wall, his friends started to help, so I beat the shit out of them too. They beat the shit out of me in kind, but they all got the worst of it... Then someone grabbed the broken bottle, stabbed me in the face with it.” he says, shaking. “And that was that. I’m just lucky no one had a knife. Or a gun. Either way, I’d have had it coming.” he says, before looking over to her again. “I’ve not... Done anything like that... Since before I met you guys. Way before then, even.”
He reaches for her vaguely, making a grabby hand. “Kichuna, I’m not crazy.” he says, tears form at the corner of his eye. “I’m fucked up, and an asshole. But I’m trying to fix that. But the way I’m fucked up isn’t that I’m crazy. Please, believe that I’m not crazy.” he finishes, voice trembling along the whole way. He barely knew her, but in this moment, it seemed vital that she believe him.
The Plea
“I don’t know that reference.” Kichuna’s flat tone replies, though there’s a faint, faint etching of a smirk at her mouth.
There’s the prick of a second needle, and her smirk evolves into a tooth-locked grin.. “Sleep. I’ll see you on th’other side.”
And the world falls dark.
–
By the time the world fades back into existence, everything is a lot quieter. The distant echo of music is gone. There’s the hum of medical machines, a few slow blinking lights, a distant series of beeps … But there’s not a soul in sight.
Except for Kichuna. She sits on a chair, some distance away. She’s wearing something different; black clothes and dress switched out for a different white and grey knee-length skirt, though the black cloak remains drapped over her shoulders. She sits with the slouched posture of someone that’s stuck with far too much free time, and she holds a novel in her hand. It’s hard to say what it’s about.
Kaisar is covered in bandages. His eye remains missing, but the socket and above gashes have been treated as best as modern medicine can allow. A new IV has been hooked into him, bag full and clear. And of course, everything hurts.
But at least the cuts were clean.
Would have been a smart ass for a bit longer, had pain not overtaken his ability to form complete thoughts, and then, the needle came into his arm, and that pain, and his waking mind, both were washed away together in a tide of dopamine...
There is a distinct difference between the mind asleep, and the mind in induced unconsciousness. A sleeping mind is still a mind, it’s behavior guided by the flow of chemicals, smoothing out the days events, sorting memories, doing all the things that are too taxing to do while wakeful, and it is still an experience, in which the unconscious mind wanders. Like an engine at rest in car put in neutral; the cylinders are all still firing, though the car isn’t moving.
Under anesthesia however, things are entirely different. Most of them operate under the same general principle. Neuron receptors in the brain are inhibited in a specific way such that the brain does not shut down, but rather gets stuck, caught in a loop where neurons still attempt to communicate but messages are delayed, disjointed, insensible. The brain reacts by repeating the cycle, requesting the information, sending the information, getting confused, requesting again. The Cylinders are still firing, but they’ve all gone out of phase with each other, no longer able to work together, and the engine simply locks up. Kai.exe has performed an illegal operation. Abort, Retry, Fail? Thankfully, the brain always chooses ‘Retry’.
When the anesthesia wears off, the brain is able to resume normal operation, right where it left off when it was interrupted. Thus, to the brain under anesthesia, there is no sensation of intervening time. There is simply the moment when one went under, and the moment one wakes, one following the other.
His lips move, but no sound escapes his throat. Then he coughs, and twists sideways, curling slightly. His only severe injury was the cut, but, there was also bruising, all over, and he was sore, the coughing didn’t help. “..Kichuna?” he asks as he twists his head up, searching the room, until he finds her again. He tries to orient himself in the room he barely remembered arriving in. “Throat’s dry.” he says, raspily. “Can I get some water, please?” he finishes, pleading expression on his face.
Sympathy for that Norwegian Devil
Loki does not look particularly inclined to attack, given that he is still leaning against the dock’s pillar with one long, spidery leg crossed over the other. The dagger’s blade rests neatly against his golden vambrace, but the god has tilted it just enough that the sun no longer catches its broad side, and Kaisar could look at him once more ( were he so inclined ) without being blinded.
“I can personally vouch for Zeus’ existence, if that’s your concern. Also that most humans of Mediterranean descent are bearers of his philandering blood.”
He smirks, lips thin and eyes glinting with mischief.
“But you did not ask me here to waste my time discussing your illustrious lineage. You asked me here on Faerie recommendation.”
“Tell me, Aiakides: do you often take Fae advice?”
“Or is this particular individual simply… worthy of your trust?”
Kaisar was glad Loki was able to cut to the point there, the conversation was getting rather circumspect. That this was about Mius, really, at the heart of it all, should have been obvious. Kaisar places his hands together, balled fist in open palm, and cracks his knuckles, while watching Loki quietly, while his smile fades.
“Trust might be overstating it. Mius saved my life. Saved me from myself on more than one occasion. Once, he was a pillar of spiritual and emotional support when all others fell away.” On reflection of those lost days, deep now in the passage of time, Kaisar grew misty eyed, but kept it from effecting his voice. “I love Mius. At least the one who was there, then. Love him as you must love that last friend who remains to let you cry on their shoulder, when the rest of the world spits on you.” he explains.
“But I know, also, what he is. It’s dangerous. Frightening, even to me. I called you here not because I trust him, because I know it is not my best interests that he has in heart, but because... I want to believe that there is still something in there, of the Mius that once helped me to my feet when I had fallen. I want to believe it.”
“I do believe it.” he adds. “Now you tell me..” he starts, as he lowers his arms to cross them over his chest. “Do you think he’s truly as twisted as he pretends to be?”
The Plea
“Tiran owns a rich fighting ring business. I’m his medic on-hand.” She pokes her head out of the curtains, and there’s some quick, muffled exchanges. She pulls herself back in, now with a ready bloodbag on a hook. “Just us now.”
“Not that it really matters, people are told to stay fuckin’ quiet about this place.” She hooks up the IV into Kaisar’s arm vein, and now takes a moment to look over the wounds on his face. She intakes a hiss of breath at the sight. “Shit…”
“They didn’t miss.” She steps aside to open a large cupboard of tools. “You wanna be awake fer this? Puttin’ you to sleep would make things easier. It’s not going to be fun for you. Anaesthetic still have an effect on you, or did you do enough drugs to become immune to basically fuckin’ everythin’?” She takes out a syringe, and switches out the needle-tip. She pulls some sort of liquid from a vial with the syringe’s plunger.
“Protocol as usual; you’ll want to be honest if you want to stay alive.”
Kaisar rolls his remaining eye up, and seethes his breath as the needle penetrates his skin... In time, blood would allow color to return to his face, help him regain his senses. It would be slow, but the effects of bloodloss begin to reverse.
“Knock me out, Kichuna. I’ve not done anything like that in... In... A long time, now. I don’t know. Long.” he says, as he rolls his head off to the side a little. “Just don’t go all Kevorkian on me.” he says, before he rolls his eye on up to look at her. Doctors were supposed to be nurturing weren’t they? Kichuna always disturbed him.
“Also... Thank you.” he adds, before shutting his eye, caving to the pain at last. Whether she knocked him out or not, his conscious mind was dominated by the pain.

The Plea
“-You again?” Comes a raspy, rough, slightly-less-monotone voice.
Kichuna Sly is looking a lot better since her first arrival on Earth. Her clothes are clean, custom, and she’s gained just a touch of roundness to her face. Evidently, food’s never been a worry now. And her workstation is notable; top-end equipment and plenty of space to work. It looks like she even has an assistant or two, tasked with updating files and bringing maintenance to the place.
Kichuna, meanwhile, stares at Kaisarios. Her feline eyes flick to Tiran, “You know this guy? Huh.”
Well, there’s a time and place for questions. “Alright, whatever, I got this. You wouldn’t happen to know your blood type, would you?” She has two persons come in to aid Kaisar into the nearest bed – before being promptly shoo’d out of the place by Kichuna herself. A curtains pulled around.
“Would make my life easier. If I had a guess, universal donor. It’s always the insane ones that are universal donors.”
“Where..?” Kaisar had questions, particularly when he heard Kichuna’s name come up. But, Tiran left, quite abruptly, after dropping him off on a hospital bed. At least he wasn’t bleeding anymore. Didn’t make a lot of a difference to his dizzy state of mind, but at least he wasn’t presently dying. So he’s got that going for him.
“I have no goddamn idea. I donated to Sakura once. If that helps.. Probably doesn’t...” he’s tired, his affect flat. “Where the fuck am I, Kichuna?” he asks, “Tell me no one’s here.” he says, as he rolls his head to the side. He’s disoriented, and confused, only conscious in the barest sense.
The Plea
Tiran arches a brow at the request and lowers the phone once Kaisarios is done talking. The touchscreen is manipulated into tracking the location of Kai’s cell phone before he raises it to his ear again. “Stay put. I’m on my way.” and he hangs up, though the trace remains.
A quick text is given to Kichuna while he navigates the lab towards a large first aid section large enough for a train-car.
TxT: Have Patient. Will meet at AA. Situation Orangeish? Pancakes after? You name it, I’ll buy.
He’d gather up a few supplies then headed to a strange station near the door. It had a pad below and one above, just at 9 feet, with a screen of a map. Tiran flicked the image from his phone to the screen, and it brought up a real-time aerial view of Kai’s location.
“Good boy. Lesse..alleyway behind is empty. No prying eyes. Good.” Tiran presses a button and immediately vanishes in a shower of sparks, reappearing several feet behind Kaiarios. “C’mere and lemme get a look atcha” he said while moving closer.
Kaisar had nothing more he could add. With the call ended, he let it idle down by itself, and pressed the blank phone to his chest as he leaned himself back against the wall, head back. The sunken, defeated feeling in his chest was almost worse than the wounds. Oh well, nothing left for him to do now, but sit tight, and wait however long it too--
A flash of stinging light, and there the man was. Kaisar hissed and nearly fell on his side as he recoiled from Tiran’s sudden appearance, bracing himself on one arm weakly, as he turned back to face him.
“... Jesus Christ.” he says, “Don’t do that shit to me without warning...” he says, wearily. There was no real strength, or anger in his tone, he was too broken down for that. He was still bleeding, not so much anymore though, now that his injuries had time to clot. His face is in ruins though. Rough, jagged glass had sunk into his flesh above the eyebrow, was dragged down, and into his eyesocket, deeply, before the bottle neck was withdrawn. The cuts are uneven, varying in depth, and jagged. There is naught but ruin where his eyeball ought be. From these injuries, from his broken nose, from his lips, blood had stained his face, and much of his clothing down the front.
He was weakened by the blood lost. Wasn’t about to get up. He leans back, laying on his bag, still strapped around his shoulder. “I was going to say bring bandages... Guess it can’t be helped. Get me out of here, man...”
The Plea
Tiran put in a pair of earplugs and picked up the first two pistols, taking aim across his lab at a large black square taped into sections. “Activate cameras.” A light came on from behind him as a series of cameras came on from behind, and around the target area.
“Small arms ballistics testing on experiment #341 - Second Skin. We’ll be starting with a twenty-two caliber weapon, working our way up to fifty, using the most widely used and accessible models to the public. Each weapon will be fire five times in it’s own section. Let’s home my aim is good.” Tiran chuckled before raising the first gun.
Before he even squeezed the trigger, a red light flashed above. The guns were set down immediately and the ear plugs pulled out just as he caught the chorus for Giuseppe Verdi’s Dies Irae requium from his phone. Default ringtone, curiously Tiran picked up the phone and looked it over.
It was Kaisarios. It surprised Tiran enough that he picked up, curious. “Yo?”
Sat shaking in the dark, while the phone rang. Part of him wanted for there not to come an answer. At least then, he could say he tried, without having to actually debase himself, by pleading for help. He almost winces when he hears that answer.
“Tiran.” he greets. It’s obvious enough just from the tone of his voice, the slurring in his speech from his inability to move his lips properly, that he is unwell. But there’s quiet while he rolls the words that come next over in his mind.
“I need help.” he says. “Medical... Help.” he clarifies. His voice is barely elevated over a whisper, but his phone is pressed close to his face.
“I’ve been stabbed in the face. Took my eye, I think. Bleeding a lot. Need a doctor that’s... Discreet. Police are looking for me. No hospital.” His words are halting and breathy, coming only at great labor.
The Plea
He was terrifyingly cold. He was not used to the feeling. His life’s blood had not stopped flowing from the gash across his face, from the broken flesh and bone in his nose, from his broken lip. The cuts on his face resulting from the punches were more minor though, and had scabbed well enough. He was fortunate for rain; his trail of blood was washed away by the water, so no one would be following it to find him. The police search for him was half-hearted at best, but there was no doubt they were out there, and aware.
He was in an awkward spot. Without a nation, without any kind of documentation, due to the rather unusual method of his ‘immigration’, he was by any measure an undocumented alien resident, without the rights afforded a citizen. If he was caught and accused of a crime, he could be held, indefinitely, without trial. Though doctors did generally protect their patient’s privacy, he was certain that there would be police waiting at various hospitals waiting for the admission of patients with particular injuries.
On the other hand his only option was to ask for help. The only people he could turn to in a time like this owed him nothing, didn’t even like him, for the most part. The shame of asking for help weighed on him almost as heavily as the threat of indefinite detention. Frozen in the decision point, he had pulled his phone out, under the cover of his jacket, and leaned over it, shielding it from the rain, and stared at it. His thumb had called up the contacts list, hovered over it, but did nothing.
There was also the third option. The easiest option, as the blood drained from him. To slip into that coldness, to let it take him into dreamless sleep forever, to fade and be forgotten. He slouched forward, eyelids trembling shut.
He hit the button; a number dialed. Tiran’s number. Ringing on the line. He pressed the phone to to his cheek roughly with a trembling hand. All he could do is hope for an answer
Seeing Red Again
The cherry red bud of his cigarette glowed a dim light across concrete when he drew in the smoke, faded as he pulled the cigarette away from his lips. He rocked his head back, let it fall to rest against the concrete wall behind him, as he slowly breathed the smoke up, into the empty air above. Eyes shut, but rest couldn't come on a mattress of solid concrete, with the sound of passing cars in the night filling his ears.
'What the fuck are you doing?' he thought to himself, as his eyes slowly opened up to the dark skies above. In the city lights, all the stars were drowned out, leaving a vision of naught but endless void above. 'Mius was right. It hurts. So much. No amount of reinvention is going to fix it. Chisel away at yourself for years and years, until nothing remains, and it won't be enough.' A deep breath, a deep sigh, and he stared longer into that black abyss above. He could almost see the devil's face in the empty space, as in the absence of sensory input, his mind filled in the blanks with dreamlike subconscious hallucination.
In his mind's eye he could see It all spiraling backwards, every galaxy, every star, every planet, every atom, shrinking back and condensing back to the embryonic singularity, from whence all things started. He saw it all blow apart in sound and fury, dissipate and cool, watched the stars be born, and wink out. Millions and billions of years ticking by in the blink of an eye, a glittering spectacle of lights igniting in brilliant flashes, and fading away just as quickly. Somewhere in the glittering, he is born. Somewhere in there, he is sitting there, with tears falling down his cheeks as he gazes into the heavens. An infinitesimal fraction of a moment within an infinitesimal fraction of a moment, before he, and the rest of mankind ceases to be. Then the earth, and the sun. The glittering continues on longer, but more sparse, more spread thin, slower, until all that's left is the dim fading light of the last remaining stars, but they too blink out, leaving a universe filled with naught but cold stones and frozen gasses, slowly spreading out into an even, unchanging, homogeneous totality, that endures longer than any other period, until this too is torn apart, atom by atom. Nothing left. Nowhere left. Stasis then, eternal. It is tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Love is not enough. This endless chase for redemption doesn't have a happy ending.
Kaisar lifted himself from the ground, and hefted his tote bag over his shoulders, and got to walking out from between the buildings onto the dark Gotham streets, flicking his cigarette away into a puddle. The streets were practically empty, save for the other lost souls; the homeless, and beggars struggling to survive, and drunk party gets going on their way home, shuffling and swaying together to cabs back home.
He didn't see the bottle coming. It flew in an arch, spinning end over end through the air, and it fell hard, smashing to pieces against the side of his head, sending him reeling against a wall in deafening pain, drops of stale beer and blood leaked down the side of his cheek, while drunk twenty somethings on the other side of the street burst into collective laughter. Hand to the blood coursing from his scalp, covering the bleeding wound, as his senses slowly came back into sync. He lifted his eyes, and follows the sound of laughter to the crowd, and felt his blood pressure spike. All that sadness and anger that he’d bottled up for so long finally popped the cork, at some dumbass kids who got their laughs from harassing the homeless.
He hit a buckle on his tote bag, and it fell to the ground from his shoulders. He marked a male face somewhere in the middle of the crowd, bared his teeth, and broke into a sprint after them. They scattered, laughing, expecting to outrun him. But he was fixed on one target, and he was faster, more importantly sober.
He caught him by the clothes, digging his fingers into a shirt. It was about then that the crowd of them started to panic. A girl's scream filled his ears, as he tugged the man he'd managed to grab backward. He hooked an arm around one of his target's and swung him around, wheeling himself on a heel as he flung the man against a wall. Kaisar kneed him in the kidneys, and swung his elbow into the back of his head, slamming the drunken youth's face into the bricks. As he pulled an arm back for a finishing punch, a third part grabbed him, holding his arm back, and pulling him away from his first target. Instead, he kicked out and knocked the man in the side hard enough to get him falling over to his side, as he curled up and clutched his face.
Kaisar hooked his left leg back and got his ankle tangled with the man who tried to restrain him backward, and twisted himself violently to throw his elbow backward into his ribs. He twisted and curled in against the blow, and started tripping up. Kaisar took the opportunity to escape his jacket, and free himself from the grappling, and wheeled around to throw his shoulder into the young man, who already tripping, collapsed onto the concrete. Kaisar kicked him once, before becoming the victim of a shoulder charge himself. His head whiplashed backward and to the side, as he was stuck from the side. He slammed into the wall of a building roughly, seeing stars momentarily, and opening a new wound on his forehead from the bang. Blood trickled into his eyes as he turned himself back to confront the third man, who was just then helping the second back to his feet.
Deaf to the world, he charged in again. Instinct more than martial training took him, and stupidly, he threw punches with sweeping hooks, easily predicted, and dodged, mostly, but it kept the men off balance and on the defensive, while he jumped from one to the other, swinging. Adrenaline running through him so dense, he didn't even feel the counter punches really, even the one that broke his nose. A lucky punch finally landed, and one of the men skittered off balance backward, and feel flat on his back, and the last one alone desperately threw himself on Kaisar, in a tackle, when his side was presented. Together, they went falling back towards the building's wall, while Kaisar threw ineffective short hooks towards the others head, but the positioning was too awkward to make the deliveries really hurt.
So he resorted to rolling and wrestling him off of him, flailing like a wild animal in an attempt to free himself. Eventually, he got on top. Wisely, perhaps due to some martial arts training, the man, rather than let himself get pinned so easy, tucked his ankles under Kaisar's hips, with his knees to the sides of his ribs, his arms up over his shoulders and around his neck, and kept his head tucked to Kaisar's chest. His range of motion restricted by the body configuration, Kai was unable to actually deliver any significant blows, but still swung his arms wildly, lifted the man off, and tried to slam his back down into the concrete with marginal effectiveness.
It was then, with a heave to lift the man up off the ground, that the fight came to an abrupt end, for the same reason it started; he never saw the bottle coming. The broken bottle this time. The sharp glass of the shattered neck came for his face, dug in at the right eyebrow, and sunk into his eye.
Kaisar screamed as the glass ripped his face open. At last, he truly lost control. His hands clutched his face as the improvised weapon fell to the concrete beside him. He lunged away from the objects of his rage, flailing one arm around to clear them out of his way, as he collided with a building’s hard wall, to support his balance. Blood and other fluids flowed free from the ruination there. The man he grappled with slipped away, and at last the group started running. Police sirens in the air signaled the world flooding back in to his senses. Though his mad hatred had only increased, reality overrode it all. He struggled to suppress the flow of blood as he got to his feet, again. He was hurt, he realized, his face was cut up, nose broken, bruised all over, bleeding. Eye… Gone. He stumbled with grit teeth, to grab his bag before he vanished back into the night, to hide from the police. At the moment, he'd earned quite the distinguishing feature. A trail of blood drops on the concrete, marked his road back home.
Secrets of the Lost City
Jeronimo was parched, and looked every bit the sad, dried out wasteland debris that he was. He was bound, gagged, blindfolded even, on his knees in the dust and sand. He's on the side of a well traveled but vacant desert road, adequately far from civilization in either direction that without aid, he'd little chance to get anywhere safe without help. If it was possible for matters to be worse, one might suppose that he could have been left out in the middle of nowhere, without any chance of even being found.
Aside from his situation, Jeronimo might have been in decent shape in better days, but weeks of privation had left him wasting thin. His skin was a shade darker than tan alone would give, and couldn't be taller than five and a half feet. His head might have been saved clean some couple weeks ago, for it was growing in thick and awkwardly even across his head, still quite short. He wears cargo khaki pants that look to be NCR Army surplus, and a shirt that was probably once white. The only identifying mark is the cross-like symbol of the Followers of the Apocalypse on his back. Like the Red Cross of old, wearing it was intended to be an international shield of protection and symbol of neutrality. Clearly, it didn't help.

Kaisar is a touch surprised by that reaction. Not so much that Loki wasn’t particularly friendly, so much as the implication of the threat. His gaze became steely and analytical as sunlight glinted against his eyes, squinting against the reflection.
“Kin of Achilles.” he parrots back, “If you believe in that sort of thing.” he tacks on with a hint of a grin. Both hands come up defensively about his shoulders, palms empty and bared, as he takes a precarious step backward.
“Not by a terribly venomous one. But yes. I have. Assuming you’re… actually talking about snakes.”
He mirrors Kaisar’s smile, but something about it is… wrong. Perhaps it is the lack of lustre in his eyes, or perhaps it is something in the smile itself – but it is cold, and though it is too small to be overtly cruel, it hints at some concealed threat and malice.
“It is hardly a matter of belief, Aiakides. I may be too young to have known Achilles – for I was but a babe when Troy fell – but the Olympians had their hands in that affair from the very beginning, and they still live. If every sapient creature refuted all that occurred before their birth because they did not witness it, every civilization in the galaxy would have fallen long ago.”
“But,” he continues, teeth and blade still flashing sharp, “not all falsehoods are consciously constructed. Some dwell in a mind with as much ease as truth, and do not allow their weight to be perceived.”
Kaisar dropped his head a little lower, but kept his eyes forward, while he stepped backwards further yet. Perhaps his first instinct, to Fear Loki, wasn’t too far off the mark after all. One finger elevated above the rest, while his other hand came to rest on his chest.
“That there was a war, in which the Greeks destroyed the City of Troy, that is of little doubt. We’ve got the ruins of the city, after all. But whether or not there was an invincible man named Achilles there, that I’m not so certain of. I do not doubt my pedigree; my great ancestor Pyrrhos of Epiros surely existed, but that’s as far back as my linage provably goes. Further than that, and my ancestors stand one foot in reality, one foot in myth, terminating of course with Zeus himself. The skeptic in me rejects that.” Kaisar says, as he comes to find what he feels is a safe distance, and relaxes, ready to react, if he needs.
“But... On the other hand..” he starts, with a vague shrug, as he scratches at his cheek “Here I am talking to a motherfucking Norse god, on the recommendation of a fairy. I once lived on an island that was actually a giant turtle. I wrestled a motherfucking dragon...”
“I guess what I’m saying is... It’s possible I guess.” he throws up another, more pointed shrug, and smiles

“That’s close enough, I think.”
Now the knife does come out, glinting like the Trickster’s teeth. He holds it across his chest, tilting it at just the right angle to reflect the afternoon sunlight into Kaisar’s eyes. It’s a precautionary measure, if nothing else – not overtly hostile or even dangerous, but neither is it particularly friendly. And it doesn’t seem to cost Loki much extra effort, for he still leans with impish dignity against the dock’s pillar.
All that had shifted was his wrist.
And that is all that will shift, for he does not seem inclined to take the proffered hand.
“Have you ever been bitten by a snake, Kin of Achilles?”
