Any of his siblings (there's four of them)
Jaime was born second to last in a family of five. Everyone always talks about the eldest, youngest, and middle children. But what about the others? He was the baby for three years before his parents had their last child. There was some jealousy at first when his baby sister was born. Especially when his sister was experiencing delays in development. They had to give her more attention. Eventually the family found out that she was going blind and would likely be unable to see at all by the time she was ten. Jaime grew out of his jealously, partially after the news, but also because it just wasn't much in his nature, and became closest to his little sister.
He was always more creative than his other siblings. That isn't to say they didn't have their own skills or talents, but he was always the one with the most imagination. He would read to his little sister and deviate from the pages. Sometimes making up new stories entirely. This created confusion in the Garcia household as they were told they didn't read it right and she would ask for Jaime's version. His family asked him to write down his stories so they could read and enjou them too.
School went relatively smoothly. At first he experienced some bullying but he learned that being humerous tended to get people to like him more. So he was a bit of a class clown. He did theater and marching band. Always excelled in writing. He had high hopes for his future and so did his teachers and school counseler. His parents didn't have a lot of money and he didn't really want to go far from them so he enrolled in community college. To him, it didn't matter if he wasn't going to a big fancy college because he could always transfer later or not. He just wanted to graduate.
During the first couple of years of college he worked on a book he had been thinking about writing since he was in high school. He finished it when he was twenty and the book was published a year later. The book was a sleeper hit and Jaime found himself with a book deal. It was exciting and he postponed his last year of college to work on his next book. Problem was that he didn't really have an idea for a second book. He had been working on his first one quietly for years and had no deadlines while writing. Jaime pushed through and managed to deliver a second book. While a lot of people bought it because they liked his first book so much, it was not well recieved. In fact, people actually hated it. Often saying it felt rushed and was incredibly boring.
Per contract, Jaime was expected to come out with a third book. He was still being given an opportunity to redeem himself. But the words wouldn't come. Deadlines were missed. Finally time was up and Jaime had nothing to show for it. He was dropped and had to face the shame of returning to life as it was. A life that had never bothered him while he lived it, but it sucked to experiece fame and the feeling of being beloved only to have it crumble. Worse yet, he had no one to blame but himself.
In the years that followed his book ordeal, he returned and graduated college. For awhile he got to live off the money he earned through his book deals but money borrowed from his family and expenses of his own meant it wouldn't last forever and soon it began to dry up. As a teenager he had a part time job at the comic store so he decided to go back to it. He figured it would be a temporary thing. Maybe it would help him get his creativity flowing again. But that was years ago and he's still working there. Still drowning in unfinished manuscripts and dreaming of what could have been.
