Baslot Boys

That's the nickname of our drill team because our commander is Baslot and when it got its nickname there were only boys on the team. I'm the only female on the team, but I'm happy to be considered one of the "boys." In about two weeks we have our first drill comp of the year. Most of us have never been to one before, and that includes me. I wouldn't want to be competing with any other group of people though. Baslot said it himself, "You guys are my dream team, well you're the only team I've got, but still."

Going into the supply room after uniforms have been issued be like Alternatively, opening the rifle cabinet and seeing that the rifles are not out way properly be like

How to put rank on a service coat (for first year cadets): 1. Aquire rank 2. Look up a diagram 3. Try and end up stabbing yourself 4. Look through your notes 5. Attempt several times more and fail 6. Ask someone experienced for help

The dungeon

So someone called the supply room a dungeon during honor guard practice today and so now I'm not in charge of a simple room, but a dungeon. Sounds like a major upgrade to me.

So school started yesterday and I'm really happy to be back. The commander for flag detail left so now it's my job and I can't wait until I get to start getting the first years to help so that getting people to help is less stressful. For some reason most people hate flag detail, but oh well. Sadly, I was unable to got to CLC over the summer, but I'll definitely work hard and go this year!

Awards night! I got five awards and I'm really proud of myself. I had a lot of fun. I also got burned while lighting the Kitty Hawk candles, but it's okay. More pictures to come!

Flags

So today it was seriously pouring rain outside. I was in my last class of the day (history) and the commander, who happens to have that class with me, saw that the flags hadn't been taken down. We weren't doing anything in class so we went to take down the flags. We came back soaked. Completely soaked. Our history teacher thought we were crazy.

You get a certain sense of accomplishment when you and the rest of the drill team do stuff in unison with your eyes closed.

Uniform

So every Thursday for the past year I wear a uniform to school for JROTC. So every Thursday I must become a mature rational adult in the 5'5" body of a high school teenager.

It usually goes on like this.

Friend: “Fuck that shit!”

Me: “Indeed, I agree with your attitude of disdain towards the subject at hand.”

Drill Practice

Today during drill we just worked on column right and column left and every time we messed up five minutes got added. It's carrying over to Thursday and I am not excited.

We had a yard sale today and it was so much fun. Oh, and I'm finally taking over all of supply and not just logistics. I'd say today is going pretty well so far.

Happy 100th Anniversary, JROTC programs - teaching students leadership, ethics, morals, discipline, and how to truly get motivated for a whole century. JROTC has touched the lives of thousands of students, who are now recruiting to start working on 100 more years of success.

Today, cadets from all across the globe ran the JROTC 100th Anniversary 5K, which was live shared. Today, cadets connected. Other cadets, like me, participated in Drill competitions. Other cadets celebrated this important day in other extraordinary ways.

We are cadets: individuals, leaders. We stand for loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. We band together as one - one Corps, one body, one soul - to express devotion to the program on this very special occasion.

Happy 100th, cadets; may many more successful and great years come.

My unit held a "Buddy" Poppy fundraiser at our local Sam's on Sunday. I am proud to say that over the course of eight hours we raised $1,026.64 for the Veterans of Foreign Wars! I am so glad I participated. I met so many veterans and it was nice to shake all their hands.

I commanded flag detail for the first time today and I’m really happy that I didn’t mess up super badly. I really should have been louder, but I’m still happy about it.

Our flag details aren’t usually that serious. People don’t take it seriously enough for it to be ceremonial or a “big deal” to command it. Whoever commands it is whoever lead the squad/platoon/etc up to the flags.

Well, I hadn't done a whole lot of commanding and deputy is a fairly new job for me and I hadn't been formally taught the commands yet, so it's not that it was super serious, it's just that it was new to me.
