somebody who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my colony is dying.
The challenge I have with early game pets is they will go straight for human meals and deplete the colony’s food supply if you don’t micromanage their areas. If this were my colony they would be eating a lot of dog meat…
Evil things are happening on my modded RimWorld rn.
An event called the Long Night has been going for about 20 in-game days now. Apparently some kind of giant space organism has drifted in front of the sun and is blocking like 99.9% of light. Every plant not in my greenhouses is dead. It is genuinely a wasteland out there. There’s still animals out there though, because there is one ☝️ and exactly ONE thing that doesn’t require light to grow still alive that is feeding all the herbivores that have managed to hold on.
Unfortunately, that thing is hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Any animal I am not actively feeding has two choices; starve to death or exist in a constant nightmare state of shroom trips. This poor megasloth has been wandering around my colony seeing technicolor demons dancing two-step to Zac Brown’s Chicken Fried for at least 10 days. Multiple alpacas are laying outside my walls in a circle fully catatonic as we speak. The guinea pigs are developing immunity, actively evolving as a species to consume shrooms as their primary form of nutrients.
This is hell. This is biblical Armageddon.
I don’t have the resources to save them all. I can only watch them wander a dark and barren world high as a fucking kite. Pray for them, because clearly god can’t hear them.
Me and my RimWorld playthrough
I’m really enjoying Onberon’s Landfall, but I am soooo tempted to abandon it and start a new game with the new DLC.
I’ve been quietly continuing my game, and I’m finally ready to start the new DLC. I’ll be updating the blog and posting about the new start as it gets underway!
I’m thinking of doing the tribal scenario or a typical crashlanding scenario, but I’m undecided still…
I’m really enjoying Onberon’s Landfall, but I am soooo tempted to abandon it and start a new game with the new DLC.

In other news…
It's been a delightful and quiet spring in Onberon's Landfall. Von has finally overcome his infectious nanites, returning his health to normal. He hasn't admitted it openly, but he seems disappointed to have lost the boost to his speed and strength; he’d grown accustomed to the nausea and considered it a worthwhile trade-off.
Regardless, Von has been busy hosting a wide range of visitors from nearby factions, while Adkins has been planting crops for the short growing season.
One visitor, Kalie Miller, spent some time at the art bench and produced the first sculpture in Onberon's Landfall!
Finally, we received an interesting request from a neighbor: they've asked if Von and Adkins would build a monument for them and protect it for the next year. The request includes an offer of the services of a sheriff for at least the duration the monument should be protected for.
Von insisted they accept the offer, as the extra hands would be a huge help. Not only could he use the help with the growing herd of caribou, but they've experienced more raids from nearby factions than they'd expected - the presence of another marksman would help better protect both Adkins and Selvi.

The Wedding of Von and Selvi
Von and Selvi married each other in a simple affair in the homestead. Adkins quietly watched from the dining table. Their guest, Breiiñope, was eager to watch their culture's marriage rituals and celebrate the union. His presence helped to ease any awkwardness that may have arisen if it was only Adkins in attendance.
Selvi and Adkins took the opportunity to bond together as new sisters during their very understated wedding reception.
Overall, it was a happy, if humble marriage ceremony. Everyone seemed to walk a little lighter over the next several days.

Breiiñope
Onberon's Landfall received an interesting request recently from the Confederacy of Emla, a gentle tribe living nearby to the south. Squirrel Guamea, High Chief, asked us to host his friend Breiiñope Beadorma for a season so he can learn about our culture. Von and Adkins welcome visitors to Landfall to help in if they're interested, but it was made very clear that Breiiñope would do no work around the encampment.
He turned out to be a fascinating character, and his stay was pleasant and uneventful.
His presence was not often noticed as he walked about the encampment, although in the evenings he would spend time chatting curiously with Adkins, Von, and Selvi.
2nd of Aprimay, 5501
A Twist of Sage
A bulk goods trader visited today from Southeastern Wasler, a nearby faction. It's fairly common, since Onberon's Landfall sits on a road running between two settlements affiliated with Southeastern Wasler, resulting in a decent amount of traffic.
What was unusual about today's caravan was its guard - one of the mercenary gunners attending it was Sage Redwyn, Adkins's 23-year-old daughter.
What we learned from other caravan members is that Sage was born during a catastrophic war in which both sides used incendiary weapons. She grew up helping her parents in an infirmary, treating the cascade of horrific burns from the battlefields. She was left with a lifelong fear of fire that prevents her from fighting fire.
We didn't get much contact with Sage while she was here. She mostly kept to the caravan, hiding behind the muffalo. She didn't get an opportunity to connect with Adkins, who was far away from the encampment gathering wood.

A New Years Eve Announcement!
We're sneaking in one last announcement before the end of the year: Von and Selvi are now engaged! 🎉

End of Year Update
Assuming no further events will happen in the next few days, we're here with an end of the year update from Onberon's Landing.
The siblings, Adkins and Von, are getting along much better with another person around. Adkins appreciates the ability to spend time by herself, and Von appreciates always having company. Von is still infected with fibrous mechanites, but he's grown accustomed to them and they don't affect him much. Selvi's very comfortable in her new home, although she would appreciate it if it were a little bit nicer. (Adkins and Von don't disagree.)
The encampment at Onberon's Landfall has expanded! We have three separate bedrooms, one of which is a dedicated guest room for visitors. We have one shared bathroom, and a plumbing system that is heating radiators in each room. There's a dedicated storeroom as well as a walk-in freezer. Selvi has been working on mining out veins of steel while Adkins maps out future expansions.
11th of Decembary, 5500
Ted
Von and Adkins agreed to start accepting guests again, now that there was a sufficiently decent space to offer them to stay. Ted, a 15-year-old bounty hunter without many skills, became one of the first visitors since Barrios. He hails from a nearby faction of ranchers.
Ted and Selvi got to talking about parties, so the group decided to throw one for the lad.
It was a fun, if low key party. Ted spent the entire time smoothing the hewn rock walls of the room to occupy himself.
Ted enjoyed his visit immensely and promised to return soon!
Welcome to Onberon's Landfall!
This blog is currently telling the history of Onberon's Landfall, an experiment in hospitality by two siblings, Von and Adkins. We make an effort to tag all posts with "#onberon's landfall" as well as the names of anyone the post includes. Tags on posts may also contain additional narration. This pinned post provides a general overview of the setting and characters, and will (hopefully) be updated as we go.

The Setting
Landfall was founded by Von and Adkins, two wealthy siblings who grew weary of life in the core worlds. They left home to build a different life together on a distant rimworld. They selected a growing world with several mostly peaceful factions. Their homestead site lies at the intersection of a small river and a local road between other established settlements, ensuring near-constant foot traffic at Landfall. This is perfect for their ambitious goal of building an inn and spa with a small farm-to-table restaurant. The homestead is nestled in the boreal forest foothills of a large desert mountain at the edge of the tundra. As such, the growing season is short, and winter is long and cold.
The People
Katia Adkins is a creative woman with a wide range of skills and passions. She has a brother, Von, who also lives at Landfall, and a daughter, Sage, who does not.
Vonriel 'Von' Vimes is passionate about caring for people and is driven to build a hospitable place to welcome guests. His sister, Adkins, is supporting him in this experiment.
Olivia 'Selvi' Vimes, nee Nulton joined Landfall after being exiled and abandoned from her home tribe. She and Von quickly became partners.

Selvi
Maybe it’s just because he rescued her, but Selvi has developed quite the attachment to Von. During her first days here, she followed him around, not unlike a lost puppy.
Selvi talked to Von every chance she could get. Adkins has found herself alone more and more as Selvi and Von spent more time together, but she’s comfortable with that.
Finally, in a moment of boldness, and under the pretense of fixing the plumbing, Selvi walked into the bathroom while Von was relaxing in the tub.
Even though Von was embarrassed, he was receptive to Selvi's advances.
By the end of that day they were lovers!
5th of Decembary, 5500
A Very Busy Day
Our neighbors, the Alliance of Releler (the rough outlander union that recently attacked Onberon’s Landfall), sent a request for aid. In exchange for four glitterworld medicines, they’ve asked Adkins and Von to draw away and take care of a pack of manhunting rats. Given Von’s condition (fibrous mechanites), the siblings’ store of medicine will go quickly. Bedsides which, it would be good to make peace in their new home. So, they accepted.
Then, almost immediately, a drop pod crashed nearby, containing an injured and dying woman named Selvi.
To be honest, the twins have been struggling to keep up with the amount of work it’s taking to build their dream inn and restaurant. Even if they just had one extra pair of hands to help with the work, it would make things much easier. The siblings made a quick decision to offer her a place in their encampment, and quickly went about rescuing and tending to her. Von’s improved speed due to the mechanites made it a quick rescue!
Meanwhile, a group of travelers from a nearby faction, Southeastern Wasler, came passing by. There’s a good amount of foot traffic on the nearby road, making this a great location for an inn!
Shortly after, while Adkins was deep in the mountain carving out a new bedroom for their indefinite new guest, the pack of manhunting rats sent by the Alliance of Releler showed up! The siblings plan had been to simply wait them out - there’s not much they need to be outdoors for.
However, the travelers from Southeastern Wasler diverted from the road and through the siblings’s fields - and right into the path of the man hunting rats! Thankfully, the travelers were apt at self-defense and made quick work of the creatures. Neither of the siblings needed to intervene. How convenient!
As it turns out, the condition that resulted in Selvi being banished is curable with a large amount of glitterworld medicine. Adkins learned about the treatment (an anti-abasia mechanite infusion) while trying to find a remedy for Von’s condition. Despite the rate at which Von’s condition (fibrous mechanites) goes through the medicine, they still have ample stores for the procedure on Selvi.
(Plus, Adkins would like the extra help now.)
While Adkins was in the middle of the operation…
… we still got a reward for those manhunter rats the travelers from Southeastern Wasler killed for us?! Well, that certainly made up for some of the expense of Selvi’s treatment. How convenient!
Here’s Adkins, happily ‘relaxing socially’ in an empty hall, reflecting on how successful that operation was and how relieved she is to have some help and company here.

A Quick Update
Our one-room hovel is no more! With the bedrooms built and furnished, Adkins turned her attention to the main room. It finally has adequate flooring, some recreation spots, and some workbenches.
15th of September, 5500
So… this winter we learned about the importance of keeping wildlife out of our food stores. There isn’t much to forage, driving the wildlife to scavenge from us.
Von tried to scare the raccoons away by attacking them. It worked, although, it turns out the fibrous mechanites that infected Von have some additional features…
Everyone was very confused by this turn of events, and Von himself spent time playing horseshoes (invisibly) to process it.
