Erm, hi? I'm Caeill, a former stable boy/dung carter/etc, currently the head dragon trainer and later a traveller.
And I'm considered a giant by humans.

Rather belated picture for Hug a Tiny Day because Caeill was being rather uncooperative. And in a prankster mood... *drew him with long hair as a payback*
Don’t worry, no humans were harmed in this hug. His (still nameless) friend was just caught in mid surprise with how fast Caeill can move his arms when in range ^^;
But his usual version of a hug (at this stage in life) is humans hugging his lower arm while he either hugs them back with his other hand or by pressing them slightly against his side. Only in really special and/or emotional cases he’ll lift the person and let them wrap their arms around his neck while he uses both hands to return the hug
By the way, speaking of physical contact, the older Caeill gets the less he will crave it, due to a biological trait unrelated with his ever growing size. His kind are far less social creatures than humans after all, especially males
After the adorable art Birvan drew me, I thought it was only right I return the favor. So here’s her Caeill getting a hug from Basil. (Why from Basil? It just seemed like it made sense. Maybe Basil heard that someone needed a hug for some reason and PRINCE CHARMING NEVER FAILS.)
Random Caeill anatomy studies. Although Evergrowers are slenderer in built than most giants (less weight to haul around later on) he’s still build like a brick wall on legs ^^;
And don’t get fooled by that gut. It’s a mass of digestive organs covered by a thick wall off muscle rather than actual fat
I still have a lot to learn about drawing muscles properly, but I’m fairly happy with the results
Hello! Finally finished it all! Three pages worth of awesome and beautiful prom goers ^^ Yesterday, an anon ruined my mood but today I’m back to being positive and I finished this with a smile. Aaaaaand to sneak in a sneak preview of Mathias, Caeill’s best friend (he technically isn’t around Caeill’s life in this point in time, but the prom isn’t canon anyway)
Poor guy is super nervous about the idea of being surrounded by too many people at once. Thankfully Mathias is there to keep him calm
Kinds of music!? I know what music is, but I didn’t know you guys split it into types. Humans are so complicated sometimes…
I guess I like to hear my friends play and sing. They have all sorts of different songs from each of their home towns and some are pretty funny. Especially when they had a bit too much to drink and start messing everything upNot all are sung in Common though, so I have no idea what they’re saying. But we still have lots of fun, even if I only get to hum (my voice drowns the music and it’s a bit too deep to match the songs. Plus the new guys often get scared)
Also when the wind is right we sometimes hear the music coming from the village below when they’re celebrating something. It’s faint but I like the sound of the instruments they use, especially the drums (usually the guys only bring lutes, flutes and tambourines. I’m the one who improvises the drum sound)
To be honest I lost count. Maybe 20-30 at a time, sometimes more? We have some that are permanent residents, but most are either brought to get proper training, or bred to be sold once fully trained (human training is often required for those, but I don’t deal with that part, for obvious reasons). So the number tends to vary wildly Also we occasionally capture wild dragons that nest too close to the communities that request our aid
Caeill grows up among humans, yes? Does he know about his own life cycle? How does he feel about it?
Yes, he will eventually learn about it (he doesn’t notice on his own because he can’t use size difference as an indicator of age when he already towers over everyone)
And it will affect him pretty deeply, especially as he gets older and starts seeing his friends dying out while he’s still in his prime. To the point everyone else avoids mentioning the topic anywhere near him, even if he pretends he’s alright

In my world setting there’s several different kinds of “giants”, but they’re actually more closely related to centaurs than to humans. The large majority lost their 2nd set of arms over time, as they got in the way of the mobility of the 1st set, but they still retain some vestigial muscles
Caeill belongs to the Evergrower family line, the only type of giants that besides starting bigger than the rest, they don’t stop growing once they reach adulthood
This is because they live exclusively in a forest jungle populated by enormous trees, so the taller they grow the more food sources they can reach (and their stomachs grow along the most out of all the organs, besides the heart and lungs, in order to digest a more plant exclusive diet. Reason why their torso becomes particularly long)
This dependency on plants as the main food source led them to develop an innate understanding of plants, which helps them find the best plants, avoid sickly ones and have a certain intuition on how to tend to them and avoid consuming too much. The name Tree Walker comes from this ability to tend to trees, the same way other giants tend to cattle
Caeill wasn’t born there however, so his growth is actually a bit stunted. But whenever his body has enough excess food it will convert it into extra growth, rather than store it as emergency body fat. That’s why starvation is a particularly big risk for Evergrowers and why they are extremely rare outside of their forest, as it’s the only place that can easily provide them with enough food
Despite all odds though Caeill will manage to reach an advanced age, mainly because of him being a dragon trainer. After leaving the Academy they help him find enough food during the meager months and his expertise is a valuable trading item for other giants and humans alike
Another problem Evergrowers face, because of their increasing size, is the amount of stress their weight puts on their organs and bones. That’s why they lose the ability to run and jump as they age and falls become a risk
The body tries to compensate by thickening the legs and bones, slowing their metabolism and provide them with particularly long arms, so they don’t have to bend or move much in order to reach things. The particularly strong upper body strength also helps minimizing the movements of the rest of the body
With the slowing of the metabolism comes longer periods of sleep and thus more likelihood of dirt, moss and seeds to accumulate on the skin. And if they penetrate deep enough they’ll actually start to develop a symbiosis, where the plant roots obtain extra minerals and other resources in exchange for the energy produced by the photosynthesis
This is a trait all giants share, but Evergrowers tend to develop it earlier and can reach a more severe state. Because the more the plants take root, the longer the sleep periods last, which can lead to muscle atrophy and potentially death from starvation (since they can’t get up when they do finally wake up to binge on food the symbiosis alone can’t provide)
That’s why when they reach this stage in life most other giants in the area congregate around the elder and tend to their needs (humans call this giant courts and the elder the king/queen), in exchange for nuggets of wisdom or stories from long times past, or to hear the mumbles of the long sleep, which are considered prophetic
Humans can find this behavior rather weird, especially coming from the larger giants, because the larger they are the less likely it is for them to form communities (a natural mechanism to not overburden the land)
I love this type of crossovers. Especially when I get to put Caeill in slightly uncomfortable situations >D
*he’s afraid of handling fragile things, especially young children who are far less likely to be careful around him than adults. And he’s completely ignorant about other giant’s cultures and what’s the proper way to act (thankfully Maira doesn’t seem to mind his awkwardness)*
If there’s one kids are good at is making up games out of the most mundane of objects when bored. But it seems Caeill still hasn’t quite grasped that what may be a plaything for him can actually be dangerous to those smaller than him. Or that some of those objects may actually have a purpose he’s not aware of yet ^^;
Throwing rocks at someone is never a nice thing, but throwing at someone significantly larger than you is pretty damn stupid
Because Caeill is a non-human and dresses in “peasant colors” (dye is rather expensive, especially for someone that needs so much fabric), a lot of people wrongly assume he’s a slave rather than a free worker. Meaning they assume they can mock and mistreat him with no real consequence (also they believe he’s too tough and dumb to feel anything just because he’s a giant)
But the agreement he has with the academy is he’s allowed to defend himself if attacked first, especially in cases like this
Don’t worry though, Caeill will likely drop him into the horse dung pile rather than physically hurt him. He just likes to give the jerks a good scare to make sure the message sinks in

This is him right after he started to live at the academy. His first job was to help out around the stables and barn (where he happens to sleep, since he already outsizes humans at that early age and will only grow bigger), help with heavy lifting and care for the livestock
Things were a bit shaky at first because of the general distrust humans have towards giants (there are too many stories of wandering giants terrorizing populations) and because of the language barrier, but they eventually warmed up to Caeill’s gentle nature
